People on MMA forums defending this bullshit is causing me to lose what little faith I had left in humanity.

Pro tip: Don't frequent MMA forums.

Thankfully, in a sport where the "chud to normal fan" ratio is higher than any other, there is still a surprising amount of people upset about this.

Ferguson is fighting Justin Gaethje. It's a ridiculous fight. Dude has won 12 fights in a row and still gets screwed out of a title shot...again. No. 1 bullshit.

the fight is also for the Interim Lightweight Title. you know, the belt that Ferguson won over 2 years ago but never got a unification match and then got stripped of?

the rest of this whole situation is batshit insane. i can barely believe this is real life.
a private island?
not telling the fighters where the location is?
fights every week? (in my neck of the woods, all gyms are closed. i can't imagine these guys are getting the best training and practice available)

If you had your money on Erick Silva being the first fighter signed to a notable MMA org to get that Rona, come on down:

"We have no idea how it got to us."

This is pretty much the exact reason why there shouldn't be cards, right now.

And the NYT just confirmed Sherwood's tweet so that's true

Quote

The secret location of UFC 249 is no longer a secret, according to the New York Times.

A report on Tuesday named Tachi Palace Resort Casino as the April 18 pay-per-view event’s host, bolstering a recent tweet from MMA industry veteran Jeff Sherwood that said the Northern California venue will host four events.

UFC officials did not return multiple requests for comment. Several sources MMA Fighting spoke to indicated it was their understanding that the Northern California casino – located in Lemoore, Calif., on tribal land that’s not overseen by the state’s athletic commission – would be the venue for UFC 249, though nothing official had been confirmed. Calls on Tuesday to the casino, which closed this past month due to the coronavirus pandemic, weren’t immediately returned.

FWIW Lemoore is in the Central Valley, not Northern California

Quote

Tachi Palace Resort Casino was once a hotbed of regional MMA. The casino rose to prominence as the host of World Extreme Cagefighting before the promotion was purchased by UFC parent Zuffa. The casino then hosted Palace Fighting Championship before regional standout Tachi Palace Fights took residence and held more than 30 events before folding up its tent; the casino often hosted outdoor shows with folding chairs. A revolving door of California-based talent fought their way up before moving to the UFC.

In a prepared statement, the California Department of Consumer Affairs, which oversees the CSAC, issued a statement advocating against holding UFC 249 on tribal land.

“The commission echoes the guidance of California Governor Gavin Newsom, the Department of Public Health, local health officials, and the recommendations of the Association of Ringside Physicians regarding the cancellation of events where people may be at risk of contracting Covid-19 and encourages the industry to do the same,” read the statement. “The commission will not participate in the U.F.C. event on April 18, regardless of the event location.”

I saw someone on Twitter say that the casino was shut down on March 20 due COVID-19. However, that's inaccurate. The gaming part is shut down, but the actual hotel is still open.

If Dana goes even more insane and holds fights in the swimming Pool like Lionheart did I might have to buy it.

Only if there’s bombs in the pool like Onita’s pool death match ?

I'm quoting what I said about Vince McMahon in the pre WrestleMania XXXVI thread. Just substitute Vince for Dana White:

Quote

I shouldn't be surprised with Vince McMahon's stubbornness and the show must go on mentality, but still I am. Everything else is shut down due to cornavirus, people are dying for fuck's sake yet this is carrying on. It's not worth risking your talent picking this damn thing up. Had to get that off my chest.

All those times Dana used to slag off the pre-Zuffa ownership of the UFC for running on Indian reservations and running from regulation, and now he thinks he's a hero for doing the same thing. Twat.

  • In an interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Dana White was asked if he thinks going on with events is a risk: “First of all, everybody’s afraid to be first. Realistically, the only guy right now who isn’t afraid is me and Vince McMahon. I mean, Vince McMahon hasn’t skipped a beat but what he did was, he found solutions, he found ways, get rid of the crowd and I’m sure he’s doing everything in his power too to make sure that his guys are safe. Everybody else is afraid to be first, right now we need leadership, we need people that are going to go out and find solutions. Hiding in your house is not the answer, I get it, we have to do it. We’ve followed everything the CDC has said. But at what point do we get back to normal? You keep people in their houses for too long without entertainment, people are going to start losing their minds and we need to start figuring out solutions and that’s what we’re doing. We’re going to do this, we’re going to keep everyone safe, and we’re going to pull this thing off.”

If the Coronavirus has taught me anything it is that some people have an inflated sense of how much they think they matter.  If there was not another fight, game, match, or any other type of sporting event until this was all over, I'm pretty sure everyone would manage.  It's not the ideal situation, but if I had to choose between more people getting infected and watching a sporting event or not watching sports because it's safer...I'm choosing to be safe.  It's not even that difficult of a choice.

They've ran Indian reservations in the Zuffa era WAY before this. Foxwoods (the card with Jacare vs. Mousasi II that was literally seven minutes away from the Bellator card across town) and the Seminole Hard Rock (WEC also ran there in the Zuffa era) are casinos on Indian reservations. Same with the Mohegan Sun (UFC 39).
