AEW Bash at the Beach - Coral Gables, FL - 1/15/2020

Dolfan in NYC

Recommended Posts

Dynamite is being re-branded as Bash at the Beach this week because someone in Stamford (who was probably fired), let the copyright lapse.

The card:

4-WAY TAG TEAM MATCH TO BECOME #1 CONTENDERS TO THE AEW TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP - The Young Bucks vs. The Elite (Page/Omega) vs. Santana and Ortiz vs. Best Friends

Jon Moxley vs. Sammy Guevara

Pac vs. Darby Allin

Hikaru Shida and Kris Statlander vs. The Nightmare Collective (w/ Brandi Rhodes)

MJF, The Butcher, and The Blade (with The Bunny and Wardlow) vs. DDP, Dustin Rhodes, and QT Marshall

--

Next week's matches will be taped on the Jericho Cruise, so spoilers will be around.

What an absolutely beauty of a show. One of the, if not the best episodes to date. Two excellent matches with the opener all action and the crowd eating it all up and the main event being more of a storytelling match of perseverance meeting its match in an awesome ass kicker. Then we had the DDP comeback match that was just about perfect other than the production botch of the finish, and even then that kind of out of nowhere finish makes sense for a spoiler like MJF. He is already a star in the making but he's going to be a mega star. Just so much charisma, ability, and understanding. Those bumps in the match: the one off the turnbuckle and the other off the destroyer were so fucking money. The troll t-shirt. Just great shit. Air DDP! He looked good even if the Diamond Cutter didn't have the bang it used to, he's 63 years old. And we got a callback to the Dusty/Road Warriors spike angle. AAARRRRRRR! (And Sammy hitting on Sterger, another great heel). Hell ya. And the draw between Mox and Pac looks like it was part of a long-term plan. Awesome! And they're hyping a match on TV a month in advance in addition to doing a great job of building up next week's cruise show.

However, this Brandi shit... It just puts a damper on the whole show. Listen to the crowd prior to that match and then after. During it, you could hear a fuckin' mouse fart. Just awful. STAAAHP, PLEASE. And holy hell that "lifeguard" with the built-in flotation devices... Way too over the top.

eeeuUUUUGH?

Great show. Opening tag definitely was all action and chaos. I don't think they'll last much longer but I dig Kenny & Hangman as a team a lot. Women's tag had some sloppy moments but Statlander's finish was impressive. I like seeing Mel Cruise get some shine and hope she does well here. Moxley/Sammy was good stuff and the post-match angle was excellent, very well done. Inner Circle promo after was brilliant, topped off by Hager & Guevara at the end.

Absolutely loved the DDP comeback tag - awesome to see him wear the tights for it and he looked great. The Dustin Destroyer followed by Diamond Cutter combo ruled and of course the big DDP dive. MJF's backflip bump off the buckle smash was classic. Super fun match. Also another excellent Cody promo earlier in the night, Cody/Wardlow in the cage should be epic. Main event was as great as expected. This was another episode where I looked at the time when Pac was coming out and didn't realize it was already main event time. Dug Darby's suicide dive shoulder blocks early on, the Coffin Drop to the outside, and the super Crucifix looked killer. Ending set up next week nicely. Moxley gonna wrestle in an eye patch on the pirate ship next week!

Mai boi finally hit his Last Supper figure-four pinning combination but didn't get it clean and it wasn't the finish. I effin love that move so darned much. It looks great when he's able to bridge straight back. Legitimately looks like there's no way out.

That powerbomb on the ring steps was disgusting. Darby reached down to try and brace, and his arm went down the ringpost hole and got all gashed up. He was bleeding from the arm and back for a while after that.

Shame it happened in the break and you lot only got to see the mini version. It looked great full screen.

While at least they showed us the replay this time unlike in the past where huge spots happen during the break and we don't get replays, those kind of match defining spots need to happen during the show and not the commercials.

I can already see what Khan's response to that is: it's a way of making sure people who DVR the show don't skip commercials (and they have a substantial amount of people who DVR it). But at least keep the hugely important stuff like a powerbomb onto the steps out of the breaks!

Raven was the voice-over for this week's Exalted One/Dark Order segment, where as the week before (before that?) it was Christopher Daniels doing the VO. If neither of them are behind this and is the actual leader, then I'm okay with AEW throwing out random people to do the VOs to throw fans off the scent of who it really is.

QT is such a sloppy wrestler but it works very well for him. DDP doing a top rope crossbody to the outside was fuckin' nuts. Cody dressed like he was starring in a reboot of Miami Vice was pretty cool. That six man tag might have been my MOTN actually, even though Darby/PAC was pretty bonkers as well. A powerbomb onto the stairs during the commercial break? MADLAD!

I suspect some people will be hating on the four way tag team opener, either because it was a spot fest or because a thrown together tag team won over three established teams. Have we seen Omega/Page vs The Young Bucks in AEW yet? Because I really want to now. And whoever it was a few weeks ago that said Trent should be a singles competitor because Chuckie T isn't that great can go kick rocks because he's awesome.

Now, from one poppin' division onto one division that's not doing so hot... that women's tag was some bullshit. Melanie Cruise can actually wrestle, but if this was your first time seeing her then you'd think otherwise. I'm going to chalk this up to nerves, working on the biggest stage in her career so far after 12 years in the business. I'm still on the Statlander train, though. Her and Hikaru Shida are the best ones they've got, followed by Shanna. But, yeah... Brandi really shouldn't be a wrestler, but I get why she was in the match since Awesome Kong is sick. My one gripe with JR tonight was during the match, questioning why the HEELS felt the need to cheat instead of just making a regular tag "because they had the advantage already". Uhhhh, it's because they're bad people, Jim. C'mon.

Sammy/Moxley lasted a little too long, but that's par the course for AEW matches. If people had a problem with Trent vs Moxley going as long as it did, then they should see the same thing in this match. Moxley is a clear step above Sammy in the pecking order, he should have put him away pretty easily. That Inner Circle segment was pretty cool, I dug it a lot. Hager doing an intentional nutshot as a callback to his last MMA fight was funny.

This will be the first time in ages that I'm going to avoid spoilers for a wrestling show. I'm insanely hyped for the visual of a two hour network wrestling show on a fucking cruise ship in the middle of the ocean. That's going to be wild.

For real though, man. Nothing in this match looked good and I think Shida is pretty great. I almost feel like it's gotten so bad that they need to suspend the division until they can swipe 3+ talented women to supplement the three you mentioned (plus Riho if she's sticking around... I know you're not a fan but I dig her and she's over).

I'm also not a fan of Emi, but that's purely because of her gimmick really. But there's one right there to supplement the three I mentioned. Bea Priestly and Jamie Hayter too, but all three I've mentioned so far aren't signed full time and work with AEW sporadically. Which is a problem. If you want to showcase joshi talent, that's fine. But don't let them take up money and space on the women's roster if they aren't going to be available every week if you need them.

Big Swole is just sitting in the back every week apparently, doing nothing. If they want "names" that have talent, all they have to do is take all of the Mae Young Classic competitors, along with the ones from the women's Casino Battle Royale, put them all on a list, and decide who they want. That's a huge list, and I know the majority aren't signed elsewhere. Why hasn't Tenille Dashwood been brought in, for fucks sake. Does Kimber Lee not want to be with a major company after her failed run with WWE/NXT?

Sadie Gibbs, Penelope Ford and Nyla Rose all have potential, but they aren't going to reach it just sitting in catering with Big Swole, or in Ford's case - being a manager for her real life boyfriend who's barely on Dynamite/Dark currently. I know Nyla and Shanna are in a feud, but still.

I love AEW, and I'm a huge women's wrestling fan, but this is getting ridiculous.

Dark has two women's matches:

Big Swole vs. Diamante

Shanna vs. Nyla Rose in a tables match

They also ran Dark Order vs. Sonny Kiss/Brandon Cutler as well as Stronghearts vs. Jungle Express. Sign me up for that last one!

Hell yes to all of that. Two women's division matches (one is a gimmick match!), my boys Dark Order in a jobber squash hopefully, and more Stronghearts.

Getting Yuka Sakazaki and Jamie Hayter back would be a start.

I miss Bea Priestly, personally. I mean, she's a piece of shit, but she's a good wrestler.

I think if they wanted any names they would have at the very least signed Tenille Dashwood when she was a free agent instead of letting Impact sign her.

I’m not sure they  actually have a coherent vision of what they want to do with the division though.

Emi has a promotion to run. Bea's actual full time contract is with Stardom. I actually don't know why they haven't signed Hayter. She hasn't joined Stardom, and her boyfriend works for AEW.

Great show.   Couple great matches,  a great promo from Cody and a good segment with Inner Circle and Mox.  I'm looking forward to Dynamite at sea.  I can't believe I'm even saying Dynamite at sea.

Also, they are doing a good job building to this cage match between Cody and Wardlow in Atlanta that's gonna be an old Omni throwback.

Am I mistaken? Were Sammy’s flash cards during the PIP commercial break after his entrance the first time that happened in 4 months? Because that was brilliant, he cut a promo during the dreaded after entrance commercial break. I have to watch it again because I had to text about it before I could even read it. Super awesome.
