Dolfan in NYC Posted December 17, 2020 Author Posted December 17, 2020 An international court has reduced the Russian international sports ban to 2 years. They will still not be eligible to compete in Tokyo next summer, nor Beijing the following winter.
Dolfan in NYC Posted January 14, 2021 Author Posted January 14, 2021 Among the insurrectionists that raided Capital Hill on the 6th was US swimming gold medalist Klete Keller. He was identified because of his height and because he was filmed wearing his USA Swimming jacket during the riot. He was fired from his real estate job and arrested yesterday. 2 1
dogwelder Posted January 22, 2021 Posted January 22, 2021 Well I'm not shocked since they apparently haven't even started any kind of vaccinations. (There was increased skepticism towards the mRNA vaccines, along with a longer period of time for government approval)
RIPPA Posted January 22, 2021 Posted January 22, 2021 While I am sure it will be cancelled - you would think a story of that magnitude would have more than one unnamed source 1
Death From Above Posted January 22, 2021 Posted January 22, 2021 Everyone under the sun is saying the story has no legs now, but that's honestly hard to fathom.
The Natural Posted January 22, 2021 Posted January 22, 2021 Yeah, I don't think the Tokyo Olympics will happen. Feel for Japan and all the competitors, backroom staff working so hard. 1
Dolfan in NYC Posted January 26, 2021 Author Posted January 26, 2021 Florida jokes are old, played out, and fucking boring. But god damn it, they've got to stop making it so fucking easy. BTW, the hard pushback from last week's story makes me think there's zero chance Tokyo doesn't happen. 1
dogwelder Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 Maybe they should just go ahead and cancel the Tokyo games... Head of Tokyo Olympics doesn’t want women in leadership roles because he thinks they talk too much 1
Dolfan in NYC Posted February 25, 2021 Author Posted February 25, 2021 US Gymnastics coach John Geddert has committed suicide after being charged with 20 counts including human trafficking and sexual assault.
Death From Above Posted March 9, 2021 Posted March 9, 2021 This is sensible. With so many nations in different places of dealing with this, I don't see what else they could do. 3
RIPPA Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 The no international fans thing has finally been made official
Dolfan in NYC Posted March 25, 2021 Author Posted March 25, 2021 The Olympic torch relay has begun today. 120 days til the opening ceremonies. So... let's look ahead to 2032! Brisbane is "strongly" preferred by the IOC to host the games. Other cities thinking about taking a shot: Shanghai, Istanbul, Madrid, and a possible joint bid between Seoul and Pyongyang(!).
RIPPA Posted April 6, 2021 Posted April 6, 2021 North Korea claims they have withdrawn from the Tokyo Olympics citing COVID concerns (Japan's Olympic Committee says they haven't received any notice yet)
Dolfan in NYC Posted June 2, 2021 Author Posted June 2, 2021 The first athletes have arrived in Tokyo. The IOC is attempting an NBA-style bubble, and failing that they are making every athlete sign a hold harmless contract. So that's clearly going great. Japan is currently trying to vaccinate all of their athletes before the games start. It's going.... okay. Latest poll has 80% of the city's population against the games happening, and there is talk that no fans will be in attendance for a lot of the sports. Meanwhile... 5 time Olympic volleyballer Kerri Walsh-Jennings and Brooke Sweat are out of their qualifying tournament after having lost in a qualifying round. This will probably end the 42 year old Walsh-Jennings' Olympic career.
The Natural Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 Tokyo Olympics is 50 days away, just heard on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Death From Above Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 I honestly can't remember an Olympics with less hype going into it in Canada, obviously part of that is how the rescheduling probably messed up a ton of advertising, combined with potential fear the games wouldn't happen at all. But man, it's *quiet* about it around here. I'm sure it will ramp up hard in the last couple weeks but it's genuinely hard to find a lot of excitement considering that Canada are really not very good in the summer games to begin with.
odessasteps Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 I was going to say isn't that just because it's the summer games, not the winter ones (even discounting the NHL issue).
