2020 HORROR MOVIES

Dolfan in NYC

Watched Blood Rage last night, the only Thanksgiving-oriented horror film I can think of (since fucking Eli Roth never made his). It was originally named Slasher and even has the name still on the credits, haha. Lives up to the title too with some pretty good and goofy gore. The story's about a set of twins, one murderous and one not, with the 'not' one locked up by mistake until he escapes. His psychiatrist finds out but mom doesn't believe it, meanwhile the crazy one goes to town in her apartment complex. Got some well-timed humor and everyone is very horny so the meat of this is a bit more fun than most slashers. Give it a watch next year, or this year, or whenever.

Also, I guess this is getting released directly to Showtime? Arachnophobes need not apply btw:

It had a brief and limited theatrical release in January.  The reviews sucked, there was a pandemic going on, and the kid that plays the older brother has a very punchable face, so I didn't bother going.

It debuts on Showtime on 5 December.  I may watch it out of morbid curiosity.

If it doesn't have breasts, beasts and every type of kung-fu known to man I have no use for it.

I've been watching the Way of the Turkey marathon off and on since Thanksgiving and I have finally watched The Sentimental Swordsman trilogy all the way through.

The Deadly Knives comes on next.

Yesterday was Venom Mob day.  I was up until two this morning.

Hoping that someone can point me in the right direction, please ?

I picked up some horror zine back in the 90s that praised all these foreign films that were supposed to be mind blowing with the set up, or the effects, which is how I found out about the coffin joe flicks, right?

But there's another I read about that I can't remember the name, much less the year. Could be Italian or European at minimum, and the premise was supposed to be about an expecting mom to be who's infant gets abducted to hell (could easily be mixing up details and the baby was already born, or she was still pregnant and the baby's soul was taken to hell?)

The mom has to go to hell to get her baby back and the movie was supposed to have these insane visual effects and stuff. Almost a mix of The Labyrinth and The Odyssey (in terms of going to the underworld) is how i remember picturing it back then

One thing I remember reading in the article, it mentioned that some of the scenes/visuals/graphics were so disturbing that supposedly people had heart attacks in the theater (or possibly they were revolted and left? Can't remember specifically other than audience reactions were off the charts to the more gruesome/insane scenes)

Film may or may not have been in 3D?  I wish I could remember more, but fuck this was so long ago that only a handful of details are all I can remember now, and of course I lost that zine two or three houses back, so I wouldn't be able to dig around for the movie title much less what the zine was called ?

Damn, I'm at a loss and I should know this. Anyone?

I am also at a loss, but the psychos at All Horror have compiled an extensive list of horror movies where pregnancy is a central theme

Hopefully this will jog someone's memory.

HIS HOUSE: too depressing to be scary?

I absolutely loved His House.  Yes, it is too depressing to be scary.

The Sect (1991) is a total shot in the dark. It had some of those elements and some pretty striking visuals, but there was no actual trip to the underworld. There was a scene involving the exploration of a labyrinthine hospital morgue that might evoke the underworld. I searched for the title on the site JT provided and their summary would make you think you were seeing a movie that sounds close to what you describe. The actual movie is nowhere near as epic as The Labyrinth meets The Odyssey but the summary fairly accurately describes the plot while also sounding vaguely like the movie you remember hearing about.

As you can see from the run times (the IMDB run time is even longer than the version I saw) it is nearly two hours long. It does start off strong with a pretty wild depiction of a Manson-like cult leader wandering up on a group of hippies camping out on the beach. Then it sorts of meanders along for about an hour.  However there is a memorable weird dream sequence, a scene which would merit a comparison to The Labyrinth, in terms of giving off a dark fairy tale vibe. It's from the same guy that directed Cemetery Man and The Church, Michele Soavi. If you liked either one of those movies, it's definitely worth checking out.

Spoiler

The mother is impregnated in a well by the antichrist that has taken the form of a black crane.  Probably why Rob Zombie took things up a notch and had his wife impregnated by skinless Howard The Duck in Lords of Salem.

Fluff mentioning The Sect, reminded me of some belated and sad news from last week.  Daria Nicolodi passed away last Friday.

Quote

Very sad news to report this morning as we’ve learned that actress/writer Daria Nicolodi, the former partner of Dario Argento and mother of Asia Argento, has passed away.

Nicolodi passed away today in Rome, Italy at the age of 70.

Born in Florence, Italy on June 19, 1950, Daria Nicolodi starred in several of Dario Argento’s Italian horror classics, including Deep Red, Inferno, Tenebrae, Phenomena and Opera.

Nicolodi also co-wrote 1977’s Suspiria with Dario Argento, subsequently contributing uncredited writing/story work on Inferno and later Luigi Cozzi’s The Black Cat.

As an actress, Daria Nicolodi also appeared in Mario Bava’s Shock, as well as Michele Soavi’s The Sect. In 2007, she worked with Dario and Asia Argento on Mother of Tears.

Monster Movie Monday! Me and my friends did a watch of Joe Bob's airings of Jack Frost and Silent Night Deadly Night Part 2 on Shudder. We skipped Black Christmas because we've seen it more than enough... not like it won't probably get watched anyway later on this month.

Jack Frost I hadn't seen since I rented it and man that movie is ridiculous. One of the chicks from American Pie gets raped to death with a carrot. A bloody hole in a door pulsates like a heart. At the end the snowman gets dumped in a truck bed full of antifreeze and the guy trying to kill it looks like he's wrestling with a blanket. Maybe the best part is knowing that it was originally slated to be a multi-million dollar film directed by RENNY HARLIN of all people but it ended up just being this cheap piece of shit filmed in a place that didn't even end up getting any snow, so they had to use foam, paper, whatever as snow. Totally absurd.

Silent Night 2 I have on DVD but never finished watching, because half of it is just the first movie told in flashback. Apparently this had some Internet fame due to one scene being a popular meme that I don't remember seeing ("Garbage Day!" is yelled by the insane lead actor right before he caps someone with a revolver, through a trash can no less) that ended up in a search for the lead as if he was hiding out due to his ridiculous overacting. This one is so cheap that not only it's half a previous movie but it was filmed by two editors! Not only that but the guy that produced it was the father of the Melendez brothers, so we all know what happened to him. If you were too young or foreign to remember, they killed their parents and went on trial in one of the first big Court TV/'90s televised scandal deals along with Dahmer, Tonya Harding, OJ, etc. The movie itself, after it starts for real, reminds me of Truth or Dare: A Critical Madness a lot. Some nutjob going crazy and killing people in a bunch of outdoor setups. Both films look like they cost $20 to shoot and they're goofy and bloody as hell.

Anyway, Darby the Mail Girl ended up getting the antler gag from the first Silent Night (Linnea Quigley impaled on a reindeer head) repeated at the end of the show. Shudder for some reason wouldn't allow her to show her tits even though the film was full of nudity. Also, I found out she's a porn actress! And a pretty good one at that... They swapped sad Xmas stories at one point and she said she left her abusive husband who kidnapped her autistic child, she got him back and finally took the plunge into stripping which saved her from working in a sock factory so she could take care of the kid. Yikes.

This Hammer/Shaw Brothers co-production can only be a letdown, right?

Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires may be the most magnificently awful thing you will ever watch.  It is wonderfully ridiculous and lands solidly in my So Bad It's Awesome zone.  The charm is that the movie is so unashamedly absurd.
