So 365 Days is Netflix journey into the porn world.

Someone had to fill the void caused by the departure of Cinemax After Dark.

We're here for it.  I just want to know how many variations of this they can do.  This was basically Netflix answer to Shades.  They should redo Basic Instinct next.

Nah. Someone recently brought up Sylvia Kristel. It's time for a re-boot of the Emmanuelle series. Think it's been almost a decade since the last one.

Both Conan movies have been doing the Showtime (or maybe it's Starz) rotation so I finally watched Destroyer all the way through. And...

It's totally awesome.

I always shunned it for not having an R rating and having goofy looking monsters whenever I turned it on TV, but the movie is KILLER. Even though it's not as bloody it still has fairly adult themes, including Conan getting drunk and the great Tracey Walter trying to describe intercourse to the virgin princess. They even have a scene at the beginning where the evil queen has to remind Wilt Chamberlain not to fuck the virgin princess, because of course, he is Wilt Chamberlain haha. In retrospect the monsters aren't that bad, it's just that Carlo Rambaldi has a kind of goofy looking aspect to his monster-making that was obscured in Possession, altered in Alien and really in fruition in E.T. Apparently the film was recut for a PG; it'd be great to have an R version come out on BluRay sometime.

I watched Hardcore with George C. Scott for the first time in ages last night since it's on the TCM app, it's just as nuts as I remembered but a few things jumped out at me. First Peter Boyle's detective character should have gotten his own spin-off movie or tv series, he was sleazy and creepy but still seemed like a decent dude and I'd love to see more of his adventures. Second if someone jumps into the movie mid-stream they might think that George C. Scott's character was an alien experiencing his first visit to earth, sure his character was an asexual Calvinist from Grand Rapids but Scott really leans into to the point it becomes comedy. Third the porn leads to snuff films that this movie then 20 years later 8mm implied had to be the movie studios being pissed about adult films hurting their bottom line right? Hardcore was made when Adult Films became somewhat mainstream a few years earlier and 8mm came out at the peak of the video rental area. Fourth there were elements in the story that could have lead to a very good movie back then or even updated for today, cut out the snuff stuff and the dumb ending and there's something to build on.

I caught the end of Hardcore the other night (some of it anyway, was flipping back and forth). The snuff stuff is dumb dumb dumb. Like, there probably is actual snuff out there, but if you get off on murder so much you probably just kill people instead of watching it. And the end was a total fakeout, you think the girl is totally done with daddy after ranting at him for several minutes straight, then she just goes home with him? Lame. I do think Boyle came off well and might go back and watch it for him though.

When I watched Hardcore again a few months ago it reminded me how disappointed I am that there wasn’t a spin-off series about Peter Boyle’s character. He’s sleazy and comes off inept, but he does have a moral code and is deceptively competent (I know that describes like every show about a cop, lawyer, or doctor from the last twenty years but it was more novel at the time it was made and Boyle is terrific.)

Edit: I only saw Curt’s post at first and didn’t see that Mister TV had already written the exact same thing.

Just watched Mob Town. It was okay. Small kind of picture; I expected a bunch of character actors playing various mafia bosses and all I got was Robert Davi as Vito Genovese and Jamie Lynn-Sigler (Meadow from The Sopranos) as Joseph Barbara's wife. Mostly it's just David Arquette piddling around Apalachin in Upstate New York as a state trooper trying to start a romance with a widow. He begins to figure out that the mob is gonna have a pow-wow at a house out in the woods because Genovese just knocked off his rivals and wants to tell everyone he's consolidated power, and rather easily trails house owner Joseph Barbara while he buys up food and hotel rooms. There's not even a really big chase sequence so you can tell this movie had a really small budget. I wouldn't even really put it on the level of Gangster Land on mobsploitation but it is nice to see Davi again.

The PG version in one my Dad and I loved watching in the 80's. Good goofy fantasy fun, Grace Jones coming out of the water and shaking her ass was probably the hint that I was not nearly as straight as I thought I was, fun stuff.

Conan the Destroyer was the fucking best.  I don't know what part was more hilarious:  Drunken Conan giving the princess sword fighting lessons or Zula giving the princess relationship advice.

GRAB HIM AND TAKE HIM~!  LIKE THAT~!

Forgot to mention Grace! She was so good the whole time, all she had to do was make faces to be perfect. Each expression you could frame and put on a wall. She just looks so cool and also kicked ass in the action scenes.

And then reading the Wiki I was reminded of the Kim Wayans portrayal of the character on In Living Color. "DO YOU FIND ME SEXAY?"

From the NY Times story on Jeremy's arrest

Quote

Mr. Jeremy was scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday, and prosecutors recommended setting bail at $6.6 million. If convicted, Mr. Jeremy could face a maximum sentence of 90 years to life in prison, the district attorney’s office said.

????  That seems awfully high unless there's something I'm not considering.  Any idea why?  Flight risk?  I'd be surprised to hear that an aging, repulsive ex-porn star is that well off that the judge felt he had to set bail that high.

For the record, I don't care.  Jeremy can stay in jail for the rest of his life for all I care.  Just surprised to see bail set that high.  Maybe it has something to do with previous accusations of the same sort?

I gotta push back on the Conan the Destroyer love. I'm glad you guys get enjoyment out of it, but oof. I think it's easily the worst of the three Conan movies, and probably only above Kull for the worst Howard barbarian film.

A decade and a half ago, I found the perfect way to explain how bad it is. I was at a Best Buy, and they had Conan the Barbarian for 15.99. Right next to it was a two DVD set of both Barbarian and Destroyer, exact same disc as the single Barbarian one plus the sequel. It was $14.99.

(Of course, I own all five of the Howard Barbarian movies, so...)

9 to 5: I had never seen this before and was super into it as it was a workplace comedy about three put-upon women in an office becoming friends.  Then it goes into a madcap comedy and I think it loses its charm.  I wish it had stayed grounded and less zany, with the women having to work within the system to get the better of their chauvinist boss.

Slender Man: Ugh, this was dreadful.  A group of teens decide to summon Slender Man one night (Which is remarkably easy, just involves watching a video on the internet) and then their friend disappears. I actually think Slender Man is a creepy creation and some of those photoshopped photos were really neat and spooky but this movie is just a mess.  The two main characters look alike, so much that I got confused a couple times and wasn't sure who I was watching.  Two characters are affected by the Slender Man, but the movie forgets about them over the last 20 minutes or so, so you don't really know what happens to them (IMDB says they're shown getting killed in the trailer, but not in the movie!) and at the end

the main girl offers herself up to Slender Man as a sacrifice, then runs away, then falls down, then gets dragged into and absorbed into an old dead tree so Slender Man is...a tree?

Just crap.

Slender Man kinda misses the whole point of the Slender Man mythos, but it gets it better than that horrible dreck known as Always Watching.

This is ironic because Always Watching was made by the guys that created the Marble Hornets ARG, which is considered to be one of the core stories in the Slender mythology.

It's still possible to love both.

It’s true. The only thing more satisfying than watching Godzilla speed box King Ghidorah’s heads is hearing a working-class Briton offer a family member a cuppa.

I can't remember which Godzilla I saw first because they ran one on TV every Saturday when I was a kid but I sure remember my first Mike Leigh film. I was concurrently exploring HK action films, American indies and foreign cinema and I saw Naked right around the same time I saw Reservoir Dogs. 26-year old mind blown.
