DC Movies - 2020

Recommended Posts

Riddler has been my favorite villain since Frank Gorshin on the '66 TV show.  I've been dying to see him as the big bad in a good movie, so I'm pumped.  I was so disappointed when he wasn't used at all by Nolan, I thought for sure he'd be in the third movie, but we got Bane instead.  Having the Riddler be a Zodiac/Seven type of serial killer is perfect for the character, I can't wait to see this.

Alex Ferns(?) really looks like Russell Crowe with a beard around the 0:57 mark in the trailer

I actually was shocked it wasn't Crowe. I legit checked IMDB because I was like "I didnt remember him being announced for this..."

With people speculating the next villains if Christopher Nolan returned for a third film, I wanted Bane and the Riddler played by David Tennant.

Ugh is right. My favourite Riddler is probably Frank Gorshin from the 1960s Batman TV show. Honourable mentions to the Riddler in Batman: The Animated Series voiced by John Glover and Wally Wingert's Riddler in the Batman: Arkham series.

Frank Gorshin had it nailed!

I like how they're setting up the young version of the character to hopefully actually look at his major criticism of a rich guy beating up poor, desperate people while ignoring police corruption. That seems interesting to me.

The aesthetic is super interesting. It's like it's a 2020 take on the early '90s doing a take on a kind of mostly 1940s vibe.

I'm interested.

Batman is a bourgeois one percenter fascist. He is a billionaire after all. All superheroes are fascists at the end of the day.

Boy I can't wait for @Raziel's reaction to this.

And for the record I agree with you. Bruce Wayne could make actual change happen with his massive wealth, but chooses to keep it so he can play dress-up and beat up villains with mental conditions and also the bottom 99% of Gotham.

Sure. But there is a pretty clear indicator that's where they're going if you look at the Riddler's messaging and Batman beating the shit out of that one guy going way over the line. The reaction from the others is the most human I've seen a group of "thugs" portrayed in a movie like this. I dig it. Going off the bat suit, it's pretty clear this is early in Batman's existence. It gives room for actual character growth.

I remember having a conversation similar to what you say here after the last Nolan movie, in which they kind of bungled its theme. Batman shouldn't exist in a healthy society. Bruce Wayne is supposed to be the wealthiest dude in the city and highly influential. Instead of putting in place actual long term change he's out there beating the shit out of criminals dressed up in a costume.

Except what do the Avengers do? They punch things. They cause collateral damage. They don't fix world hunger. They don't fix poverty. They don't cure diseases. They don't help the environment. They just punch stuff. This isn't isolated to Batman.

You mean the end of the movie where Batman organizes an army of police officers to fight against Bane and his army of disenfranchised "criminals" made up of society's impoverished outcasts and "occupiers" who loot and steal from the rich people's homes?

Yeah, I wonder what side of that fence Nolan lands on ?

Just saying, food for thought.

Well, this is the DC thread, so.... that's why we're talking about Batman.

(But I don't think someone like Bruce Banner or Steve Rogers or Natasha Romanoff is a billionaire. An argument can be made for Tony Stark, though.)

Batman would totally vote for Joe Biden and think that's enough, just gonna say it.

Apply the same thing to the Justice League.  They punch things.  The only DC hero that meets your criteria is Green Arrow.

And of course Batman has a history of beating up desperate poor people such as (checks notes) Ra's Al Guhl, Penguin, and Scarecrow.

Yeah, TDKR was pretty much Nolan saying "Poor people will be dumb, shut up and let the Rich people run shit and we'll be fine".

Shhh, don't break the narrative or you'll be first against the wall!

The poor desperate people would be the nameless thugs, like the one in the trailer. Those with mental illness would obviously be someone like Scarecrow or Joker.

Contrary to what Raziel says - that's awesome, and a good step forward. Now hopefully this movie or future sequels takes note of this and goes in that direction.

I think we agree. Obviously super heroes are stand ins for the police/authority/justice. But they were even establishing the idea that Batman's existence was a problematic sign of an unhealthy city in the second Nolan movie. Harvey Dent was supposed to be the real change needed to stop corruption and 'fix' the city. Batman is a stopgap plugging holes. But as you say, look at how that ends in the third one. JGL's character was supposed to be a return to "healthy normalcy" but it felt shoehorned in with what you say about the police putting down the hooligan naive socialist revolution. Just felt like jumbled messaging that got fucked with at the end.

Look, right now if they release something like the above in a time when people, particularly Black people who have long been taking the brunt of white legal violence, are voicing serious concerns about police brutality, it will be a tone deaf failure. There has to be some sort of examination of the problem Batman has always presented of a rich white dude beating up poor "thugs".
