NCAAF 2020: OFFSEASON

Without getting too political, I thought there was no way Doug Jones could win re-election, but the republicans may have just found the right man to lose to him.

Surely, no Bama fan with any self-respect would willingly consign themselves to living under Tuberville’s reign as senator.  2002-2007 was enough!

Oh, and it's sideways-related to football, but for the first time since World War II, the Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena has been cancelled.

It's usually held on the same day as the Rose Bowl, so draw your own conclusions.

For an extra splash of cold water, here is what NCAA President Mark Emmert had to say in the release:

“When we made the extremely difficult decision to cancel last spring’s championships it was because there was simply no way to conduct them safely,” Emmert said. “This document lays out the advice of health care professionals as to how to resume college sports if we can achieve an environment where COVID-19 rates are manageable. Today, sadly, the data point in the wrong direction. If there is to be college sports in the fall, we need to get a much better handle on the pandemic.”

The data point is in the wrong direction? No shit.

Sidestepping COVID stuff for a minute, I saw something interesting, recruiting-wise, today.

It started when I was checking out Alabama’s 2021 class, currently ranked #2.  Nothing unusual there (except for their recent OL commitments, which are out of this word).

#1 is Ohio State.  Nothing unusual there either.

Who’s #3?  NORTH CAROLINA.  Now, that’s something you don’t see every day.  Or ever, really, in the modern recruiting era.

So, what’s going on there?  I did some digging and discovered that state of NC is abnormally deep with talent this year.  The state currently boasts 25 recruits rated 4* or better (247 composite rankings).  On an average year, they have about 12.  So, that’s double the talent from usual.  And UNC currently he commitments from 10 of them—nearly as many 4* players as the state produces in a typical year.  And they may bag even more of them as the year goes on.

So, the question becomes, is this a short-term boon (think South Carolina in the early 2010’s, when suddenly they had Clowney, Lattimore, Gilmore, Jeffrey, etc. pop up in their backyard and became an overnight contender for a few seasons) or is this the beginning of a trend?  If you check out recent US population migration trends, the information suggests it might be the latter.  Metro areas in NC are booming.  If Mack Brown can defend their yard, UNC could easily become the class of their division and Clemson’s perennial challenger in the near future.

Wisconsin's AD said the university athletic programs will be in jeopardy if there's no football season.

So yeah, he's basically saying "it'd be a shame if something happened to your precious softball (or any other women's) team"

As of 12/31/19, the University of Wisconsin had a total endowment of $4.3b.  If they really want to, I think they can turn over a few sofa cushions to find the money.

Wisconsin officials told the Wisconsin State Journal that the athletic department would have to go into its reserve funds to make up the difference. According to the report, the reserve fund had $190 million at the end of the 2018-19 fiscal year.

They have the money, they just don't want to spend it.  I'm not sure what the reserve fund is for, if not for this.

It's kinda like the airlines - "WELL...we saved for a rainy day, we just don't want to use it on THIS rainy day"

Remember this the next time someone asks, "So, how exactly would they pay the players?"

Do people who run these leagues and sporting entities know that's going to be the only viable solution? It's been that way since the outset.

Easier said than done.  If you move the season to the spring, why would anyone who may be drafted play?  If you move the season to the spring, what do you do about next season?  They can't possibly expect these dudes to play two football seasons in one year...for free.  The only real option they have is to cancel the season.

That's the basic truth that everybody involved seems to be working as hard as possible to ignore.  Texas still thinks they're going to play with 50% crowd capacity here, where the cases are 10x what they were before we started reopening.
