It just feels like a film I've seen like fifteen times before. Maybe these true crime films have worn on me a little. It's definitely a Scorsese riff (specifically Goodfellas and Casino) but it's the best job of doing a Scorsese movie I've seen from anyone in years, including Marty. My wife is all into that shit and we wind up watching a lot of movies and documentaries in that genre and it all starts to blend together. Hustlers I'll get to watching sometime soon, but every time I think of it I just wind up thinking of Widows.
sydneybrown
First Best Picture winner in over a decade that I feel like the right film won. Obviously the film being foreign language is history making...but has any one person ever won four Oscars in one night for the same movie? Joon-Ho won for Picture, International Picture, Director AND Screenplay. Literally the only other possible way is if the director also won an Acting Oscar, since International and Picture haven't been the same movie before. I guess if the director also won for editing... I saw he's the second person to win 4 in one night, joining Walt Disney in 1950 something. Edit: those were for different movies though. Looks like he swept the short film categories and got feature documentary Edited February 10, 2020 by Brian Fowler

I dunno if this is the best comparison... it felt it was trying to be The Big Short but with exotic dancers but didn't have the cast to pull it off. I also didn't think J.Lo had the Oscar worthy performance the initial reaction to the film at TIFF put it as. So you're telling me the character that plays the big brother/sister that takes a seemingly innocent person under their wing and gets you into a life of crime is eventually going to turn into an even bigger power/money hungry maniac. Tell me more.

Curt McGirt
How did Joaquin fare for The Master? Because I thought that role crushed Joker.

Joker was Joaquin Phoenix first Academy Award, he was nominated for Gladiator, Walk The Line and The Master. Phoenix should have won for either Gladiator, Walk The Line or both. J.T.
Aw. Hair Love won the award for Best Animated Short! What an awesome testament of a father's love for his child. I remember the first time I tried to braid my daughter's hair when she was four. Yikes. Combs were fucking terrifying, but I was determined to get it right so my kid could be out in public with dignity intact. My daughter used to leave her Winx Club action figures at my apartment and I honed my hair braidng skills on them. I now cannot imagine a world without the wonderful invention of Cantu Twist & Lock moisturizing gel. Edited February 10, 2020 by J.T.

I remember growing up before better, higher quality, and accessible African-American products than you usually get at your local neighborhood beauty supply store hit the market. I had a mother and older sister in the house, and I usually was the last one in the bathroom in the morning before I went to school or wherever else. It was like a goddamn tornado hit but somehow avoided my house and carried all the makeup products, accessories, Blue Magic/Ultra Sheen, Softee, and everything else up to the bathroom sink. Thank god all this a bit more streamlined.

Thank god all this a bit more streamlined. We were a Sta Sof Fro / Ultra Sheen household when I was a kid.. I used to fucking hate Ultra Sheen because it smelled like motor oil, but better that than fucking Wildroot. No matter where you kept the bottle, Wildroot always poured out onto your scalp ice cold. Thank God that my kid has grown up during the Cantu / Mixed Chicks era. I sometimes have this amusing thought of a riot at one of those dystopian future open air markets like the one in Soylent Green or Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome over a Shea Butter shortage. J.T.
I am an analytics mark, so I find those award sweeps very interesting. I wonder if Leto would've swept the Stinkers and the Golden Turkey awards to go with his Razzie win if those honors had existed when Suicide Squad was released? Perhaps Leto will win the Razzie Redeemer award when Morbius comes out? Edited February 10, 2020 by J.T.

The Natural
Roger Deakins, two Best Cinematography Oscars in two years after so many nominations without winning, @Brian Fowler. Brian Fowler
I'm happy for Deakins, but it doesn't have the same emotional impact the one two years ago did. Honestly, for a few years there, the only thing I was really watching the Oscars for was to see is the greatest living cinematographer* would ever win. *My deepest apologies to Emmanuel Lubezki who is legitimately just as good, but I slightly prefer Deakins.

This win couldn't possibly be as emotionally wrenching as the first, but 1917 is a visual masterpiece. It especially deserved to win this particular honor.
