MLB OFFSEASON - P&C report 2/10/20

Okay - it was impossible to keep track of all the settlings so just find a list tracking them all.

I will note that Cody Bellinger agreed to a $11.5 million deal which is the new record for 1st year arb eligible players. (For context - Aaron Judge who probably would have been the only other person this year to challenge Bellinger's amount only got $8.5 million)

Anyway - there are 20 cases still outstanding. They can still avoid arbitration but at the moment they are scheduled for a hearing.

The big one to note is George Springer. He is asking for $22.5 million. The Astros counter was $17.5 million It is a) the biggest dollar case remaining and b) the biggest difference between player and team. (For context - the next biggest dollar case is JT Realmuto who asked for $12.4 million and the Phillies offer was $10 million (and even this $2+ million gap is rare))

All the suspension stuff is in the other thread.

HOWEVER - whenever the Astros eventually name who their manager will be (and eventually same with the Red Sox), that will get mentioned here

Couple of teams DFAed big money guys (though they are still on the hook for the money)

Phillies get rid of terrible human being Odubel Herrera. Still owe him $19.5 million

Giants dump Zack Cozart who they had acquired in a trade in what was obviously now a condition of getting the player they wanted. They will pay Cozart a little more than $12 million to not play for them

In what could be considered the first baseball related move related to the sign stealing scandal stuff

The Astros and George Springer avoid arbitration with Springer agreeing to a one year, $21 million deal

Springer had been asking for $22 million. Houston's counter was $17.5 million

So yeah - this is what happens when the owner takes over baseball ops and is looking for good PR

Of for fucking fucks sake...Jed Hoyer said today that the Cubs are past the point where they'll be able to extend most of their core, which is basically just Rizzo, Bryant, Javy, and maybe Schwarber and Willson. How in the fuck can you not extend most or all of those players?

Oh, wait, I know how, it's because you have a turd burglar owner who looks more and more that he'd prefer the team salary to hover around a small market team's salary despite raking in money hand over fist from Wrigleyville and the Marquee network.

Fuck the Ricketts. Them and Sinclair deserve each other.

Hoo boy... Cubs Convention started today and Tom, the dumb fuck that he is, came out to give his opening speech and he was booed and heckled. The loudest boos came from him mentioning how they were thinking to the future and the Marquee network. To that he said, not making this up, "you won't be booing once the network launches!" That drew even more boos from the crowd. At that point he quickly left the stage.

What a mess. I guess he championed more shit about the transformation of Wrigleyville, Wrigley Field, and the network than the team itself because in recent days he's talked a lot of shit about the team.

What a great owner we have. Fucker.

Not even joking... It wouldn't surprise me in the least if next off-season the Cubs hire Luhnow and Hinch. Theo is undoubtedly going to leave, Jed will too, and David Ross will get Rick Renteria'd.

Are corner outfielders with terrible OBPs that hard to find?

Well, ones that requires you to give up a draft pick to sign were more scarce.  Maybe the Braves are looking for a new market inefficiency?

Interesting... yet albeit selective... piece of information from Nightengale

In fact the only other managers currently managing who have won a WS are Joe Girardi and Terry Francona and they are both with different clubs.

To be fair, Maddon wasn't fired, but Nightengale is also an idiot.

News for @Dolfan in NYC (though if like me he will believe it when he sees it)

The Marlins are in the process of negotiating their new TV deal and the rough estimation is when completed the team will add $20 million to payroll (this would be starting in 2021)

Also it is believed that Jeter and the boys will agree to some sort of naming rights deal for Marlins Park (since Jeffrey Loria never agreed to one because he always thought he could get more than $6 million (which was the best offer the team ever got))
