2019-20 NCAAF: Week 2

Fun fact: In the past 3 seasons Army has lost a total of 5 games: At Ohio State, At Oklahoma, At Michigan, At Duke and at North Texas (which they avenged in a bowl rematch). Guess what I'm saying is that Army has been low key a real good team.

As mentioned before, that triple option is a bitch to defend.

Like, it's always been an offense that levels out talent gaps, but now it's also one that the Power 5 teams never play against except for occasional matchups with service academies.

Toss in how easy it is to overlook Army because of whatever important game is coming up, and... Well, Oklahoma and Michigan both have found out how much of a bitch it can be.

Either Texas’s pass defense is breathtakingly bad or LSU is going to be a real threat to Bama and Georgia in the SEC this year.

Texas didn't even really get into the game until after halftime, when it seemed like every offensive play from Texas ended with an LSU defender down and being helped to the sideline.

Every snap from the shotgun just kills me. This offense sucks.

Tough call but he dropped his helmet to make the hit. His misfortune that the runner got knocked around to have his own helmet in the way of the hit. Thus, helmet to helmet. Next time, don't lead with your helmet like that.

Michigan was embarrassingly bad. Poorly coached and unprepared. Patterson should have been benched. He was awful. Throw in 500 fumbles and dumb penalties and it's a miracle that they escaped with a win.

Question: seeing how the triple option has given top teams fits why won't some big conference minnow/punching bag like Rutgers adopt that strategy to compensate for the fact they will never have the talent of those teams?

There's a few reasons: one, it's not the kind of coaches that get those jobs (except at Georgia Tech for a good long while) and Lord knows most coaches are married to their systems. (Is you want a real mark of a coach's quality, look how well he adapts to his personnel instead of trying to adapt the players into his system)

It also likely hurts in trying to recruit the occasional really good player that might choose your school. The local kid grew up a fan and has NFL potential might chose to play for Rutgers, but he's probably not going to choose to play in a system that won't prepare him for the NFL.

Also, although the system does help level the playing field, part of the advantage Army has is that these teams don't see it often. Recognizing the play at the snap and being highly disciplined with your assignment helps to neutralize the option a lot. So as the kids see it on the field every year, and the coaches get use to game planning it... Well, you get the Paul Johnson Georgia Tech era.
