AUGUST 2019 WRESTLING CHAT.

The Rough Riders and Roughriders were from different leagues that never officially merged until Ottawa has been in existence for more than 70 years, and Saskatchewan had been named Roughriders for more than 30 years.

Does everyone just call them the Muffdivers anyway? And if not, why not?

Listening to Quackenbush talk about personas and how, starting out, you should have a very specific persona firstly as a developmental exercise (how would a wrestling accountant throw a punch?), secondly because if it’s too broad then there’s likely a better version of your persona out there right now.

Which made me think, does NJPW have the highest proportion of the ‘best version’ of broad archetypes in current wrestling?

Conniving Odious Heel - White

Technical Wizard - ZSJ

Athletic Marvel - Ibushi / Ospreay

Scary but Agile Monster - Archer

Cool Rebel - Naito

Stoic Warrior - Ishii

Never-give-up Face - YOSHI HASHI ?

Impossibly Handsome Man - take your pick among Ibushi, SANADA, Tana and others

Yes there’s bias from having just binged the G1 but it’s hard to think of more proficient, more over versions of these character types.

There's more coming out about OWE United Kingdom's shows next month. Five days of tapings, Two in London (Sep 18th & 19th) and Three in Liverpool (Sep 20th, 21st & 22nd), for a show on Fite.tv. Two episodes per live show. And they've got a nice mix of OWE originals, UK indy workers and AEW talent booked:

Oh man, I can’t wait for Drew McIntyre as a heavy for the Scottish mob, or Braun Strowman as a coach of an inner city pee wee b-ball team who gets involved in the action of taking down the gangs corrupting the youth, or maybe Alexa Bliss as a Cyberpunk stripper/heavy for a Neo Detroit mob boss, and they all have to hit their signature moves once in contrived ways.

Edit: In reference to wrestlers making cameos on Fox Network programming.

Honestly, I'll just settle for WWE Superstars doing guest spots on The Simpsons- considering that wrestling was big for the entire run of The Simpsons so far, had a bonafide boom period during the time and was big otherwise, had a number of huge stars...and yet the Bret Hart guest spot on The Simpsons was the only time a Simpsons guest spot went to a wrestler (in either company, no less.)

Shit, they made the episode where Grampa Simpson was a former Gorgeous George-style villain and even then, we got no WWE stars to do a guest spot.

A domestic abuser

Anyway, the Lisa Frank comment fits, but what the hell. You can't go all Kevin Sullivan and do what Honma does behind closed doors on TV anymore, after all.

I have no idea what any of this means. Well, I know what Domestic Abuse is, wasn't aware Honma had ever been in trouble for that. But who Lisa Frank is and what Kevin Sullivan does behind closed doors, you're talking in pure riddles there.

So basically Casey was saying EVIL is a kiddie/Halloween version of the old Satanic/evil wrestler trope.

Kevin Sullivan used to beat on his female disciples when they screwed up (at least he did Fallen Angel/Woman, not sure about Luna) on camera. As far as Honma:

Quote

In November 2015, Honma's former girlfriend of 18 years, fellow professional wrestler Kiyoko Ichiki, accused him of domestic violence over the past four years. Honma denied the accusation, instead claiming that he was abused by her and stating that he was seeking legal action against her for trying to damage his career.[48][49]
