AEW - SUMMER 2019

Janela rocking a FMW shirt.  You know, the lesser W*ING.  But still cool.

The Darby Allin portion of the video is exactly what I was talking about when I said they should be thinking outside the box production wise and doing better.  Well done.

That Darby promo was fucking incredible. THAT is how you make the outsider a babyface. What a great line at the end! I cannot wait for that guy to get what he wants and be a star, accepted on his own terms.

I think AEW is gonna need a bigger roster than we maybe think, because I think one of the things they’re gonna do to be different is not have guys on tv every week. Moxley talked about it a bit on Keller’s podcast. If the top guys aren’t wrestling every single week, there’s more room for talent, necessitating guys like the Revival, the Good Brothers, Dillinger, the inevitable Ryder signing, et al.

Is one of those Japanese Women the one who wore the orange pants at DON? That’s Women was my favorite of the 6?

I think Yuka will be a breakout star, myself.

Also, looking at the present, a good fit for the Fyter Fest audience. I linked to her entrance theme in I think the DoN thread, but it is amazing in its over the top nutso animeness.

Id only heard Janela talking in out of character interviews where he’s laid back / hungover to the point of slurring his words so I want expecting much but that was a really creative and intense promo. Allin’s was fantastic as well.

Theres a pertinent reddit post currently about the need for AEW to consolidate their YouTube content, and I agree as they have BTE, Cody’s channel and the official AEW channel putting out different great content that you may miss if you don’t stay on top of it.

Edit to add the video here

The fighting game crowd is pretty knowledgable about wrestling for the most part, she'll do well.

last year pretty much everyone NJPW got a good reception- even Chase (lot of it was everyone had their working boots on, not just the main)

Spears promo was a slight bit cornball, but excited to see this sonofagun get a shot.  Sorta strange finish - with the praise from the executive and Cody strangely replying he'd be a 'good hand'/good coach (like Billy Gunn, agents, etc.?).  Agreed, Janella seems ready to make his name - good promo!  By the point of the Allin promo I'd kinda had enough of this style of 'intense' promo, but Allin does seem able to talk.  Good!  Brandi's promo wasn't blowaway, but I find her very easy to take, not obnoxious.  Fair Heads of management! I'm down with that.  This was all great to see in contrast to those BTE segments.  Not my bag of tricks.  I'm not finding them funny nor particularly useful (tho, kinda dug that Dark Order promo), but seems like the fanbase does, so that's good.  Anyway, very excited about the rise of the AE Dubbya.

p.s. who is going to join the Lucha Bros against the Bucks and Omega?

Obvious set-up for a match.

Maybe, but when? He's booked for the next two shows, and that's a hell of a long build up for what's just really a Shawn Spears vs Cody match. Nothing groundbreaking.

I think it's just Cody telling the truth, actually.

Not unlike Cody and Jericho. Planting the seeds, let them sprout eventually. Digging everything so far.

We have been so conditioned on immediate payoffs. I would be really surprised if once we get over the summer hump this doesn't pay off.

I hope it’s Dustin personally. I want to see that dynamic in action and he’s already got a match against the Bucks coming up so you could use this match to inform that one. Plus Omega/Dustin just sounds cool to me.

I'll echo the love for Janela and Darby's promos.  Both were really well-done and have me excited for their matches.  I also liked Joey goofing off at the end which was amusing.  I honestly believe that assuming AEW takes off the way I'm hoping Darby will be a very marketable star especially with the Hot Topic crowd.

And Yuka's theme is so adorably crazy that it's hard not to love her before the match even starts.  Add to it that she's really good in-ring and she'll do very well for herself.

Meltzer cleared up the Brian Cage situation at DoN.

Quote

The situation with Brian Cage at the Double or Nothing show is that they contacted him to be in the Casino Battle Royale. The idea was they would given him some spots to look good before eliminating him. Cage hadn’t cleared it with Impact, who he has an exclusive contract with and is their world champion. They called Don Callis shortly before the match and his take was that he didn’t think his world champion should be in a pre-show Battle Royal, just based on the idea of an old school positioning of your world champion. Based on the mentality of protecting your world champion and having him positioned as a star, he wasn’t wrong. So Cage was pulled from the match. Impact wasn’t against him appearing per se, in the sense that if they made the deal ahead of time they probably could have worked creative out and worked out something that made sense to both sides like AAA did by giving the Young Bucks their tag titles

Cody just tweeted that they will be making a "massive match" announcement at Noon (EST)

This turned into them announcing Kenny Omega vs Jon Moxley for All Out
