Rev Ray
I will once again be participating in the 2019 World Series of Birding with the Hackensack Riverkeeper team, the RiverCreepers, doing a about 16 hours of birding on Saturday May 11th. Our run in the in the watershed of the Hackensack River, basically in the eastern parts of Bergen County and Hudson County as part of a fund raiser for the Hackensacker Riverkeeper, an environmental group in my area. Since I've been on the team we've done the mid-120 species in one day range most years except the one time we got fogged in pretty bad. Rev Ray
Set a new record for our team at 131 species between 4am and 9pm yesterday, seemed like things were going slow early with wind, not a high count but got an unexpected good bird for north jersey in a Purple Martin. A lot of grinding out of to get some "easy/expected" birds, but we hit a pocket of warblers in Oradell that really boosted our momentum and had lucky breaks in a few of our planned stops where we got our targets and were able to push on. We had clear weather most of the day with weather in the 60's. We had two new team records of an American Wigeon as a drake was lingering in the area (they've usually migrated north by now) and a least bittern (a very secretive bird that hides in the Meadows that we usually do not have time to put in to chase after). First bird of the day was a singing American Robin: Last bird of the day was the beent call of a common nighthawk: Here's the totals: 1 American Robin Schmidt's Woods 4:00am-4:18am 2 Barn Swallow Meadowlands IBA--Mill Creek Point 4:18am-4:40am 3 Marsh Wren Meadowlands IBA--Mill Creek Point 4:18am-4:40am 4 Gray Catbird Meadowlands IBA--Mill Creek Point 4:18am-4:40am 5 Northern Mockingbird Meadowlands IBA--Mill Creek Point 4:18am-4:40am 6 Song Sparrow Meadowlands IBA--Mill Creek Point 4:18am-4:40am 7 Swamp Sparrow Meadowlands IBA--Mill Creek Point 4:18am-4:40am 8 Common Yellowthroat Meadowlands IBA--Mill Creek Point 4:18am-4:40am 9 Canada Goose Meadowlands IBA--Kearny Marsh 5:12am-5:25am 10 Great Blue Heron Meadowlands IBA--Kearny Marsh 5:12am-5:25am 11 Osprey Meadowlands IBA--Kearny Marsh 5:12am-5:25am 12 Downy Woodpecker Meadowlands IBA--Kearny Marsh 5:12am-5:25am 13 Eastern Kingbird Meadowlands IBA--Kearny Marsh 5:12am-5:25am 14 Tree Swallow Meadowlands IBA--Kearny Marsh 5:12am-5:25am 15 Red-winged Blackbird Meadowlands IBA--Kearny Marsh 5:12am-5:25am 16 Yellow Warbler Meadowlands IBA--Kearny Marsh 5:12am-5:25am 17 Carolina Wren 601 Schuyler Avenue, Lyndhurst, New Jersey, US (40.8, -74.116) 5:26am-5:28am 18 House Finch 601 Schuyler Avenue, Lyndhurst, New Jersey, US (40.8, -74.116) 5:26am-5:28am 19 Brown-headed Cowbird 601 Schuyler Avenue, Lyndhurst, New Jersey, US (40.8, -74.116) 5:26am-5:28am 20 Northern Cardinal 601 Schuyler Avenue, Lyndhurst, New Jersey, US (40.8, -74.116) 5:26am-5:28am 21 House Sparrow 601 Schuyler Avenue, Lyndhurst, New Jersey, US (40.8, -74.116) 5:26am-5:28am 22 Blue Jay 745 Washington Avenue, Township of Washington, New Jersey, US (40.998, -74.062) 5:44am-5:53am 23 Tufted Titmouse 745 Washington Avenue, Township of Washington, New Jersey, US (40.998, -74.062) 5:44am-5:53am 24 Common Grackle 745 Washington Avenue, Township of Washington, New Jersey, US (40.998, -74.062) 5:44am-5:53am 25 Rock Pigeon Poplar Rd. Rev Ray
https://amp.theguardian.com/sport/2019/may/17/world-series-of-birding-new-jersey?CMP=share_btn_tw&__twitter_impression=true This got shared to us on Twitter, I know this team, we overlap in the same area. This team (or parts of it) has won the limited geographic area in the past, but they had an off day. Chris was birding with his fingers taped together when I saw them at 1pm.
