Oh god, I think I say this every year, but this might have been the hardest one yet. There are almost no obvious stinkers in it this year, like there usually are. Why couldn't they have released Sonic in the summer? ?

FYI, today would be the last day to put Long Shot on your lists.

I still gotta find time to figure out the prizes, and put my own lists together.  Work has been kicking me in the face this week.  (It's still better than that year I didn't have a job, though)

RossWB is betting that Child's Play will be a box office bomb as well as a horrible movie.

I don't believe we can be friends.

My laziest probably saved me from putting Long Shot on my list... though I would have gotten the bonus from knowing its RT score was high

I think I'm almost certainly the biggest fan of the franchise on this board (I hold Seed and Curse in such a high regard it borders on reverence) but, other than the brilliant decision to cast Mark Hamil, I'm not sure there's much that looks good about this.

(Yes, of fucking course I'm going to go see it)

For those who did put Long Shot on their ballot - its opening weekend was $10 million since End Game is still making all the money.

That was actually third as it finished just behind The Intruder

Adjust your expectations accordingly

Long Shot has had the same RT score for about a week now. Can I get a ruling to leave it on the RT list? I'll gladly take it off the Box Office list.

I have to say no.  There has to be some cutoff date for allowing a movie on a list.  The date that the first reviews show up on RT is unpredictable (since I have no knowledge of screening dates for critics), and you can't base the cutoff on that.

Besides Proud Mary, which Sony went out of their way not to promote, Sony Screen Gems produces solid numbers when they decide to put out these smaller budgeted black actioners/thrillers over the last few years. The Perfect Guy (2015), also starring Michael Ealy, finished first at the box office for that weekend. It makes no sense that they only put out 1 or 2 a year when Blumhouse puts out a random horror every six weeks it seems like. Warner Bros. is also exploiting the shit of the Conjuring Universe and squeezing that for every red cent they can.

Honestly, even with that, something like a "Festival Tax" would be reasonable, in theory:

In the event a movie was a festival darling and there are reviews on RT available before the contest formally begins, then if you want it on your RT list, you must agree to start with one point as a tax for the movie, since invariably that leads to a benefit for the contest (any smaller festival movie that is getting enough buzz to merit putting on the list probably has high RT scores going into the competition,  and by contrast, a movie that's getting dragged before the competiton begins with low RT scores will probably translate to "it's likely going to get pulled for retooling and fall under the Adjustment Bureau rule" anyway.)

It's that's the case, you would also have to do that for Disney/Marvel films that have their U.S. premieres like a week and a half before their theatrical release date. They have reviews about the same number if not more than films that debut at Sundance/SXSW/Berlin/Tribeca film festival. If there is just a sample size, I don't see why there would be a need for a tax. Based on the year, a film that finishes at 88% could end up at number 1 or number 5 or 6.

Question that just came up from @EVA saying the "New Mutants" change...

When adjusting my ballot to take it off the list, I was using the "move everything else up one until the place that the new movie fits in goes there." One of the movies I happened to have underneath was "Detective Pikachu", which would come out this week.

My question- if something like this happens and ballots need to be adjusted, if the movie has come out, is it locked into that exact position? Like, if a movie like this comes out- for example:

Before the announcement, my ballot:

Quote

7-New Mutants

8-Rocketman

9- Secret Life of Pets 2

10- Detective Pikachu

11- Men in Black International

As of today's change, it's:

Quote

7-Rocketman

8-Secret Life of Pets 2

9- Detective Pikachu

10- Men in Black International

If it was Friday, would I have been able to do that, or would it have had to be:

Quote

7- Rocketman

8- Secret Life of Pets 2

9- Men in Black International

10- Detective Pikachu
