2019 Q2 MOVIE DISCUSSION

RIPPA

Recommended Posts

Yeah, that makes me sad.

After reading a few of the bad reviews, it looks like people are finding fault with Godzilla because of the underdeveloped human characters that have pretty much followed the franchise for as long as anyone can remember.

I think that the Shin Godzilla becoming the bar for all things Godzilla is a blessing and a curse.   I think that it's great that Toho found a way to reinvent Godzilla to keep the monster relevant in Japanese pop culture.

The idea that Shin Godzilla served as a public shaming of the Japanese government for their slow response to the Fukushima Daichi disaster is common knowledge, but that movie is more or less a fable like the original Gojira was and there is plenty of room to embrace the mindless and fun kaiju disaster porn that compromises the majority of the Godzilla catalogue or kaiju movies in general.

I can't name half of the human characters in Supra Inframan, Godzilla vs. Biolante, Gamera vs. Barugon, or Destroy All Monsters and I think I will still be able to sleep well tonight.

Can this be one of those times international ticket sales bail out for the franchise?

It's not doing particularly great overseas either.

Godzilla vs Kong is already in post, I believe, so it's still coming, but unless it does a fuckton* better than this did, it'll likely be the end of the Legendary Monsterverse.

If it does succeed, I want them to go nuts and try to get the Daiei rights and give us Godzilla vs King Kong vs Gamera

*It's an industry term

I believe the current Godzilla model is 300', while Skull Island Kong was 104', but I think they said something to the effect that he's still growing in the 70's...

King of the Monsters is gonna have a way better shelf-life with kids that are growing up seeing it. Hopefully it turns a nice profit when it comes out on BluRay/DVD.

EDIT: Also, I feel like a dummy looking at the credits and not realizing that it was Dethklok doing "Godzilla". I was all "hey, Gene Hoglan!" but Brendan Small didn't ring a bell? Jesus...

EDIT II:

Yep. at the time of Kong:  Skull Island, Kong is still an adolescent, but in the scene where the expedition tries to get though mass grave in the Skullcrawler's domain, the ape skeletons aren't nearly as big as Godzilla's current size.

They will have to find the means to explain away Kong growing to kaiju size and I suppose radiation + plain ol' growing up should fit the bill.

Watched Upgrade last night. It lacks subtlety. It's like someone watched watched Ex Machina and decided to make Alicia Vikander more relatable by having her be Robocop, and played by Tom Hardy at home. The action was alright though. Bit short, which made sense early, but the climactic final battle wasn't an epic crescendo of violence, like I thought it was going to be.

How are they going to do Kong vs. Godzilla in that universe? Isn't Godzilla like 400ft tall and Kong "only" 50 feet or so?

Kong could be the Rey Misterio to Godzilla's Big Show, using his agility to keep it interesting. Godzilla should win 99 of 100 times anyway.

Might depend on who is booked at the babyface and who is booked as the heel.

Godzilla should always be the heel. But instead of throwing salt or spraying mist.....

Chef (2014)

A rousing tale of how critics who are harsh about Jon Favreau's work don't know anything and how the things that critics dislike aren't Jon Favreau's fault. Eventually, critics will come around because Jon Favreau is too talented to be denied. I wonder what kind of father Jon Favreau is. Also, why doesn't Jon Favreau understand anything about the internet?

Lively music. The movie food made me hungry.

Probably the easiest money RDJ's ever made.

I'd like to cook for Scarlett Johansson.

⭐⭐1/4 out of five.

Caught Shaft this morning. I was laughing my ass off and it's super entertaining.

Saw it with my dad and older brother and we all enjoyed it as well. It does remind me that I really need to catch the original and Sam Jackson's movies. Always been meaning too, but t just hasn't happened yet.
