Guest The Magnificent 7
I watched The Magnificent Seven remake and it was terrible. I should have just rewatched the original or my Total Larsson DVD instead.

Guest The Magnificent 7
That or I should have watched and honored the greatest movie ever made that turned 50 yesterday. “ You brought two too many.”
Contentious C
It was actually released in Europe in December '68. But for a minute there, I thought you meant Che! (the only thing Wikipedia brought up) and I was pretty sure that had to be wrong.
Swift
Just watched the original Suspiria. Looked amazing but didn't much care for it otherwise. Anyway towards the end, the witch character says "the American girl, I knew you'd come" in a similar tone to how Matt Hardy would say it. Did he get it from there? Also, another character says "you heard what the doctor said". The same phrase is uttered in The Elephant Man but that's probably just a common enough phrase. Jiji
Just got back from the new Godzilla. I've seen all of the Toho movies and the American ones. This is my favourite super happy, benevolent Godzilla movie of the bunch and trails only the first and most recent Toho movies in the series imo. Awesome cast (Charles Dance, baby!), great kaiju battles that took a lot of influence from the Toho movies, great use of Toho music, and fun/cheesy themes. It's everything I wanted from that movie and more. It was also the first movie I've seen in one of those Dbox seats with the rumble and movement and that was such a neat gimmick for this. And Mothra was perfect. Only thing I was hoping for was Ziyi Zhang to start singing Mothra's song when she came out of the cocoon. Mothra is no. 1A best. And the oxygen destroyer makes an appearance too! Huge ode to the Toho classics and I'm there for all of it. This was legit one of my favourite theatre-going experiences I've had and I cannot wait for Kong vs. Godzilla next year.
bink_winkleman
Ah man, I was stoked to see it last night and thought it was a huge let-down. Tywin Lannister was great but I pretty much hated the rest of the cast and couldn't stand how they cut to them after every. single. big monster fight moment. I'm gonna pop in my VHS of Godzilla vs. Monster Zero tonight to get the taste out of my brain. Just too much on the people side, and would have been fine using some of that budget on the dumb military stuff on Kong or something instead. AxB
Just watched Red Sparrow. It wasn't too great. Kind of slow, and detached. It's one of those where the director wants to keep you guessing if there's going to be a twist or not, so he makes people's motivations and allegiances unclear, but then you can't relate to them because you don't know who they are or what they want. Are they a confused and overwhelmed innocent trying desperately to survive amongst all these machinations, or are they an ambitious and calculating manipulator pulling strings? Because whilst I could get behind either one of those characters, it's hard to get behind someone if you don't know where they stand. Jennifer Lawrence gets surprisingly naked in this movie, but it's not sexy. Even when the character is supposed to be being seductive, it's filmed in a kind of clinical, removed way. Whilst most seduction scenes in movies are about seducing the person watching the film as much as the character being seduced, here they aren't. Also the Jen-Law is romancing (or is she?) Joel Edgerton and there's no chemistry there at all. You don't buy it as they fancy each other, you buy it as 'She's a spy and she's got to seduce him, he knows this but is going along with it because that's the job'. But later in the film I think we're supposed to think they've fallen for each other (or have they?) and I didn't buy that for a second. The fights are OK. Very History of Violence 'this is what an actual fight is like, bloody and painful' style. Not stylised and dramatic like Hollywood fights. But it's very action lite. Mostly talking and... I was going to say intrigue, but it's not actually that intriguing. If you like spy movies and hate what Bond and Bourne have done to the genre, wish it was more like something Robert Redford would make in the 70s, or the Ipcress File or something, you might like this. Or hate it. I'd recommend it on the basis of Jennifer Lawrence nudity, but it's 2019. I'm sure someone uploaded those scenes to some website somewhere. Football coach guy I pretty much know from Super 8 I thought was right on the line of super cheese American angry dad for me and I love me some Vera Farmiga but her character was pretty ridiculously stupid (and that's coming from somebody focused on climate change "bigly"). Watanabe ruled though and I won't hear anything against that. Eleventy was serviceable as well. But yeah, if you didn't want a big dumb plot sledgehammer then this isn't for you. But it's a kaiju movie, so... like, I don't know? @Tromatagonwhy have you not commented yet? WHY HAVE YOU NOT SEENT IT YET?! So many mark out moments! OH, OH, OH, AND THIS WAS THE BEST! Spoiler MF Doom started up in my head when I saw that. KING GEEDORAH. Edited May 31, 2019 by Oyaji

bink_winkleman
I was totally fine with a big dumb plot, just not one that overshadowed the monsters. I did want it to be a little weirder, and less screen time for humans. I loved that mark out moment you mentioned, and there was a really great Mothra moment I adored, but I just never felt like they'd let me get immersed in the monster fights without cutting to the people. I did like Watanabe and that character, for sure.
Tabe
Saw Godzilla tonight. Without a doubt the most gloriously ridiculous movie I've ever seen. Don't just turn off your brain, remove it from your head, put in a box, and lock it in the trunk of your car. So many places I literally laughed out loud at the ridiculousness. Radiation is dangerous except when it's not. Wind is powerful except when it's not. Noises are loud except when they're not. People are invincible except when they're not. And a million other things. Don't care. Like it a lot. I don't understand saying there wasn't enough monsters. They were on-screen a TON. Lots of fights, lots of action. And they look great. My criticism would be that, like the last one, too much of the fighting takes place in dark or rainy environments. C'mon, gimme a big fight in daylight! But... yeah. Fun time. Even better is the ticket and concessions were all free. Edited June 1, 2019 by Tabe

Nice Guy Eddie
I saw Godzilla last night. I'm split on it. The monster fights were awesome. I could have used more of them and less humans. The only humans I gave a fuck about were Wantanabe and Zhang Ziyi. Everyone else annoyed the piss out of me, especially Vera Farmiga and her dysfunctional family drama. Also, how do you not have Gojira covering Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla" for the closing credits? ...and because I'm a giant nerd, I took a picture with the theatre employee dressed as Godzilla https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2381115812213473&id=100009452325217&set=a.1398105990514465¬if_t=feedback_reaction_generic¬if_id=1559356764396588&ref=m_notif
John from Cincinnati
The Cooler (2003) William H. Macy really had a nice little run where he was the most recognizable schmuck on the silver screen. The mob drama is the same cliche thing you've seen done better a thousand times already. Macy's kid is a transparent sleaze, and I don't buy even Macy as a big enough schmuck to fall for his lame hustle. Alec Baldwin drags Ron Livingston into a bathroom and tortures him. The scene is framed in a way that makes the method of torture unclear and confusing. At the end of the movie, Livingston is shown with broken fingers. Baldwin's portrayed as a total dirtbag throughout before being clumsily "redeemed" at the end. At one point he kicks a diorama. Maria Bello is frequently topless and occasionally nude. Paulie from Goodfellas gives a speech to Alec Baldwin about what happens to old lions. It's unclear what point he's making. out of five. However, I think I enjoyed it if my memory serves me correct. Or I could be confusing it with State and Main which also stars William H. Macy and Alec Baldwin.
