Disney must've been annoyed that none of the cast would agree to come back without him and they're gonna need to wrap up some plot threads.

I think that's a big reason why Disney's tapped out and brought James Gunn back. The excitement from the franchise is what James Gunn brought to it along with the cast. As noted before, I don't like Guardians of the Galaxy and cosmic MCU but I'm glad for those who do.

IT'S A CELEBRATION!

Is there a reason people don't think he should have been fired when what he did would get literally everyone else fired?  I'm honestly asking.

Because he wasn't employed by the company when he made the remarks.... 10 years ago?

The non-cynical answer is, he was contrite about his words, apologized, and the attacks were made in extreme bad faith, and he got fired anyway.  Enough people, fans and industry, raised their voices, Disney listened to them and he was re-hired.

The cynical answer is, this is a fucking tens of billions of dollar franchise that you're letting get derailed because of some dude on the internet pointing out that one of the most successful members of the franchise said something questionable about a decade ago?  Especially when an overreaction caused the entire cast to freak out.   Nah, son... just wait for the heat to die down, and it'll be fine.

Separating the art from the artist, plus Twitter ten years ago was (in certain circles) a competition to turn everything that happens into the most offensive joke possible, like The Aristocrats.

10 Years ago?  It never stopped.

One has nothing to do with the other, but it's interesting to see this come at the end of a week that started with Tucker standing his ground on all the backwards, deeply-held beliefs he's expressed in the past (not to be confused with all the backwards, deeply-held beliefs he rants into a camera five nights a week).

Well, yeah, but now there's the political extremes offence culture battle royal attempting to disqualify everyone on the opposite team factor.

And there's a gulf of a difference between a director and writer known for dark humor and joke writing then going on twitter and making some dark jokes and someone else saying some hurtful and racist shit that wasn't any kind of attempt at humor who is also trying to rile up their audience.

A large part of me worries about where comedy is going to be in 5 or 10 years. Anyway, that's another discussion for another time.

And let's not forget that the Mouse knew about these when they hired him in the first place, so they weren't actually 'firing' him to begin with because of content (or they simply wouldn't have hired him); they did it because loud jerkwads pretended to clutch some pearls.

And to take AxB's analogy further, did James Gunn just skin the cat and stay in the Rumble?

Poor Goose.

Well technically, Disney listened to the fans, said they weren’t going to rehire him, waited a long time, then rehired him.

And cynically, I’m sure seeing that not only was he not going to be ostracized, but he was going to go to the competition to work on a similar project that could have helped kickstart/reenergize their comic movies had absolutely no impact on their decision.
