Scenes You Didn't Understand as a Kid

There’s a scene in Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure where Pee-Wee and Mickey the convict have to outsmart a cop at a road block. They get Pee-Wee to dress up like a woman so that they can pretend to be a couple to get past the road block. Right after they get past the road block, Mickey looks over at PW who was still in drag and sort of leers at him and gives him a once over. Didn’t get the joke back then as I didn’t know anything about the stereotypes of prisons.

I always interpreted it as Mickey being appreciative of Pee Wee's quick thinking... looking at him as if to say "nice work, kid!"

If you grew up in the 80s, chances are you were born mid to late 70s, so your parents are, to one degree or another, from the 60s. They'll have had strict 40s/50s parents who were censorious and that. Makes sense they'd raise us differently. Plus movies were different then. After that whole video nasty controversy and the PMRC shit, suddenly kid's entertainment was expected to be wholesome. Plus you had the whole American morality thing of violence is OK for kids to watch, but sexuality isn't (utterly baffling to Europeans, that) which really came to the fore mid 80s as well.

My parents were born in 50 & 52. I'm the youngest child born, born in 87. I saw Aliens 1-3, Predator 1 & 2, Ghostbusters 1 & 2, at least one Nightmare on Elm Street film and parts of others, multiple Chuckys, Die Hard 1 & 2, Terminator 1 & 2 , Mortal Kombat, most of the Police Academys, and so, so many other things before I was even 10. I have no idea how this shit happened. I blame/thank my older siblings and probably my dad based on what he has watched at times while taking care of my nephew.

I was born in 1974 and my parents along with my aunt and uncle took us kids along to see flicks like Stripes, Stir Crazy, Neighbors, Urban Cowboy, Outland and many more! We also got cable in the fall of 1982 so there was tons of stuff that was either on or I watched when no one was around that would be considered by some to be inappropriate. HBO was pretty good at running PG movies during the day but Showtime and The Movie Channel would run Skin-a-Max type stuff at any time, I remember coming home from school and watching movies like Hardbodies and the weird Canadian sex romp One Night Only.

I am not surprise that American parents allowed their kids to watch slasher films as pre-teens because they generally don't give a shit about violence.

You probably got smacked in the head during the counselor sex scenes, though.

Many moons ago my folks were going to see "Animal House" on their date night, but somehow the babysitter no-showed and they were forced to take 5-year-old me with them. To hear my mom tell the tale there were tons of candy breaks, I yelled "GREAT MOVIE!" at the projectionist as we were leaving afterwards, and the couple sitting in front of us said I was better than the actual movie. :D

Animal House is one of those films I saw on TV edited before seeing it on video, so i was late seeing the step ladder scene.

Similar to Blazing Saddles and the church choir singing "shit." I actually think its funnier with the organ drowning it out than them just saying it.

One of the first movies my mom rented for us when VCRs became available to rent was ANIMAL HOUSE.  My Sister tried to warn her, but as a giant fan of the original SNL crew, Mom figured it'd be fine for us to watch while she and dad went out for the night.

I should clarify that I was not *allowed* to watch F13 Part 2, but did so through the neighbor's patio door while my eldest siblings watched with their teen friends.  To this day I drive faster past the woods down the street from my parents' house.

OK, it's 1982, so I'm seven or eight years old. I'm watching Batman the movie, with Adam West and Burt Ward, on BBC1. All the villains are plotting something or other. A door in Wayne Manor starts to open, and.... We interrupt this broadcast for an urgent news update on the Falklands war. It might have been the sinking of the Belgrano, I don't remember. But this was a good ten or fifteen minute news show, and the whole time I'm getting more and more nervous about exactly what's on the other side of that door. Are Batman and Robin going to be OK? Are they hurt, are they dead? It was the biggest cliff hanger ever and it wasn't even on purpose.

We did win the War though. Stupid Argies should never have invaded.

The scene in Lawrence of Arabia where the Turks capture him and it's insinuated he gets prison raped went completely, totally over my head as a kid.

Also, it's a really different kind of "over a kid's head", but the chestburster scene in Alien is one of the most fucking amazing things I've ever seen in a movie but it didn't really have much impact on me when I saw the movie as a teen. I didn't see it again until many years later, like late-20's, and it blew me right out of my chair just how brutal, out of left field, and well done that shit was. Goddamn. That movie is flat out amazing but I had to be old enough to appreciate just how well done all the tension is through the whole thing. At this point it's cemented in my 10 favourite movies ever made.

I first saw Alien when I was probably about 9 or 10.  That scene scared the fuck out of me and I didn't revisit Alien again for many years after that.

I know I was watching R rated stuff as a teen/preteen whenever got a VCR in the early 80s.

My parents had no issues with me watching action movies.  I was told to close my eyes during one portion of Under Siege.  But one of my favorite things as a kid was a double feature of True Lies and Speed.

My order kids are now 13.5 and 12, and they've seen a few tame R movies (really, Sleepy Hollow is rated R?!) with me. My daughter, the oldest, has taken a liking to horror and watches stuff at sleepovers with her friends. I don't know if she's watched anything especially sexual but has definitely seen the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, at my recommendation as the scariest movie I've seen.

Meanwhile she watched How I Met Your Mother, all seasons, 7 times so... at least is aware of some sexual situations and innuendo. Shit, that could lead to another thread about TV shows we watched as kids (Married... With Children was a staple of my youth).

Saw that in the theater with my dad, he didn't bother haha. But if I could remember better I could count on one hand the amount of movies I've been denied or had censored as a kid by parents or non-cable networks.

Apparently. They showed it at school one year and it got a huge complaint from one of the parents. On the other hand, they showed both the Leo version of Romeo and Juliet AND that one that had actually adolescent nudity (though I think they excerpted it) and nobody whined.

I know I've brought it up before, but my English teacher taped a piece of construction paper over the screen during the topless scene in that.

It wasn't until literally well over a decade later I learned the actress was actually underaged at the time, which honestly kinda scared me off of wanting to see it uncensored.

Kiera Knightley did a topless scene in The Hole (not the Shia LaBeouf one, the Thora Birch one) when she was 16. They had to get her parents permission. But that's nothing compared to the whole Daily Sport Linzi Dawn Mackenzie sleaziness in the 80s. At the time, the minimum age a girl could appear topless on Page Three of a newspaper was 16 years*. But the Sport found a fifteen year old girl they really liked, so they had her doing lingerie photo shoots every day for a good month before she turned 16 and could legally take her bra off.

*That law didn't change until the late 90s, and The Sun and The Star kept using 16 & 17 year olds right up until the last day they legally could. Which does mean that technically Rupert Murdoch is the UK's leading distributor of child pornography.

Both Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting were only 16 years old when Romeo and Juliet began principle shooting.  Olivia celebrated her 17th birthday on the set of the movie.

I also can't really watch the unrated cut of that movie anymore knowing what I know now.

Again, Americans have no real issues when it comes to their kids watching violent content.  Nudity is still our Puritanical taboo.

I can usually handle my gore like a champ, but there were a couple of decapitation scenes in Sleepy Hollow that even made me gasp.

Then there's the off screen beheading of the young son of the town midwife that is mildly disturbing.

You just see the Horseman exiting the house and tightening the drawstring on his bag and you know he's just put the boy's head in there with the ones from his mother and father.  You can't help but feel a little icky.

All was cool again during the scene where the Horseman cuts Brom in half.  Watching Casper Van Diem lose a sword fight and get vivisected at the waist was fucking sweet.  I will not lie.  I marked like a school girl.

irony.  Ray MOTHER FUCKING Park played the part of the Headless Horseman during the combat scenes and Brom was killed in the exact same manner that Park's signature character, Darth Maul, was aka being cut in half at the waist....

Spoiler

...or at least we thought Maul was dead...

When I worked at a movie theater it was wild how many parents would take their kids to incredibly violent shit, but would come out and complain to us if there was a titty.

Can we also talk about how fucked up it was that they made kids toy lines for movies like Rambo and Robocop?  Because that is, in retrospect, super fucked up.

If you edited First Blood's dialogue down to one mention of "fuck," it would probably pass muster for PG-13 and that includes the scene where naked John Rambo is blasted with a firehose by the douchebag cops that are "bathing" him.

And yes, we live in a world where both Rambo and Ace Ventura were turned into cartoon series

Seriously, I don't understand it.  No one hopes their child grows up to be a violent sociopath, but at some point, I hope my all of my unborn children grow up and get to see a titty.

And really, isn't that what we all want for our kids?
