2019 INDIE WRESTLING THREAD

Recommended Posts

Sad news as former Progress tag champ Kid Lykos announced his retirement last night. It's a shame,  he was always a super fun worker, and CCK were a supremely fun act, but he had terrible luck with injuries. Heard he hurt himself again at Riptide on Monday, must have been the final straw

A new championship is coming to MLW in June.

MLW announced today that the promotion is introducing a National Championship. It will be an openweight title, featuring wrestlers from the middleweight, heavyweight, and super heavyweight divisions.

The inaugural National Champion will be crowned at MLW's television tapings at the Waukesha County Expo Center in Waukesha, Wisconsin on Saturday, June 1. There will be four wrestlers in the National title tournament, with the two semifinal matches airing over the next several weeks leading into the finals taking place at the Wisconsin show.

“The new championship means bigger fights with greater regularity,” MLW's Court Bauer hyped the National title in a press release.

This will be the fourth active title in MLW, joining the World Heavyweight, Middleweight, and Tag Team Championships. Tom Lawlor is the World Champion, Teddy Hart holds the Middleweight title, and the Hart Foundation (Teddy Hart & Davey Boy Smith Jr.) are the Tag Team Champions.

Weren't they also going to introduce trios belts? Or was that a joke that I didn't get?

Boy, I sure hope the Hart Foundation win them because I just can't get enough Teddy Hart.  Yeah.

Incidentally, I'm sure this has been covered here before, but how is MLW able to use that name?

So Ace Steel is having a match IN MILWAUKEE. I believe that was the guy who was helped.   With Dave Prazak around the ring .  And then a rather skinny mystery man decides to help out. ??

Yeah, they were going to introduce trios belts to give the New Hart Foundation and The Dynasty something to feud over, but thought better of it since they decided to put the tag belts on Teddy and Davey Boy Jr and let the Harts use the Freebird rules to defend the straps.

Now you have two title feuds for the price of one stable feud since MJF will contest Teddy's Middleweight belt while Pillman and Davey Boy will probably work Hammerstone and Whatsisface.

Wonder if this will be his first US indies appearance.   Huge get for GCW

I am digging the conversion of AC from failed gambling capital of the East Cost to Hotbed of Professional Wrestling.

Not just that the hotbed of death match wrestling.  I mean imagine 5 years ago if someone told you that the Showboat Hotel and Casino would be more violent than the ECW Arena ?

Latest MLW show is up,

1. MJF vs. Pillman Jr. was a match of Which Guy Do I Want To See Get Crippled First?  Pillman has been such an incredible heel that accepting him as a babyface is still hard.

2. Reed / Swann vs. Yuta / Anoa'i was fun and indyriffic.

3. The amazing push of LA Park continues and I love it to death, however I am really loving the booking of Father and Son Halloween Destroyers vs. Hellbilly Deluxe combo of Sami Callahan and Mance Warner for a future card.  Not sure why I can embrace the tweenerfication of Sami more than Pillman becoming a face, but there it is.

It's nice when you don't even have to leave the casino for violence instead of walking a few blocks away from the casinos and start seeing the pawn shops and liquor stores. The worst blow I've ever had came from an African-American working girl in AC back in 2008. I didn't plan on staying the night otherwise I would have gotten from my usual guy. I had only gone down there to see Bleeding Through and Bullet for My Valentine. The blow was terrible, but my first time with an African American girl was mind blowing.

Today in Ethan Page causing internet drama

Apparently AAW is telling wrestlers that if they work for AAW - they can't work for the other local promotions (specifically naming Black Label, Freelance and Warrior)

Guest Stefanie Without Stefanie

I never understand when promoters do that. I remember when there was some kind of spat between promoters here, and the argument one promoter gave was "I don't want people watching their shows and thinking they're mine." Never mind that this promoter was renting his ring to the other promotion.

One would think it's better to build up a base by cooperating rather than fight over scraps.

Mance Warner vs. Sami Callihan is Ole Mancer's best MLW match to date.

Jim Cornette's schtick detracted from the match. As to be expected with Callihan and Warner, it was a fun brawl. I like them joining forces to take out Promociones Dorado.

Back to Cornette, his commentary during Callihan/Warner is what I'm afraid Jim Ross is going to pull when calling matches not to his liking in AEW.

This weeks MLW is another really fun show.

Lucha Bros v Horus / Air Wolf is exactly what you would expect.  Great faced paced opener.

There are a couple of really great Salina de la Renta promos on the show, she is fantastic as MLW's queen bee and a real highlight for me.  The look of disgust on her face when Mance turned her down was something else.

As Hail Sabin said, Mance v Sami was probably Mancer's best match in MLW, Cornette was on fire on commentary as well.  The finish and post-match was all kinds of goodness.  Mance's music coming on while the brawl was ongoing and then fading to black was such a cool way to end the show, made it feel like a Roadhouse style brawl.

Contra Unit continue to be booked like the baddest men in wrestling, they destroyed Ace Romero & Barrington Hughes.

There was also another crazy Hart Foundation promo that featured Davey Boy Jnr. corpsing after Teddy said "pecker".

Gringo Loco v Puma King was also on this show.

Court has booked some really great "gang wars" at the moment with The Dynasty, The Harts, Promociones Dorado, Contra Unit and now Mancer and Sami.  It makes sense for a promotion maybe lacking a little in both star power and TV time.  In one hour they manage to make everyone feel important.  Lawler has hardly been on the show but still feels like a legit champ. Easily my highlight of the wrestling week now.

I remember Rick Bassman trying this when MPW version 1 happened. We had to strip Frankie Kazarian of the belt. It lasted a whole couple of months, I think.
