Curt McGirt Posted March 3 Posted March 3 I was just thinking about the end of the book Please Kill Me not long ago, where Jerry Nolan died in the hospital and his last words were "I remember", and they have an interview section after that with him talking about seeing Elvis live and remarking about his shoes. It's sad but it reminds you that the Dolls were around for the very beginning of rock and roll. There won't be another band like them again. Also, I recommend watching the documentary about Johansen that Scorcese made recently. It was excellent. RIP 2 1
Gonzo Posted March 4 Posted March 4 (edited) Dolly Parton has made a statement saying that Carl Dean, her husband of nearly 60 years and the man who inspired her song Jolene, has passed away at the age of 82. https://www.knoxnews.com/story/entertainment/music/2025/03/03/dolly-parton-husband-carl-dean-dies-in-nashville-at-age-82/73015011007/ Edited March 4 by Gonzo 2
Curt McGirt Posted March 6 Posted March 6 Good lord, they never even talked about him on the Country Music documentary by Ken Burns. I'd just thought she went perma-single after breaking it off with Porter Wagoner. RIP

zendragon Posted March 12 Posted March 12 Its kinda odd that the New York Dolls never got a second life in the 80's like other glam acts from the 70's like Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, and Kiss considering along with Hanoi Rocks they started that whole hair metal thing
Curt McGirt Posted March 13 Posted March 13 (edited) Man they were on different planets then. Right before Johnny died they handed him a literal wad of $25,000 in cash to tour Europe and he wound up OD'ing on methadone after being hot-dosed with LSD in a New Orleans hotel room. Killer Kane was either at the bottom of the bottle right then or had already found Jesus, I'm not sure when that occurred. Johansen was doing Buster and acting (he was in Tales from the Darkside: The Movie btw, and was pretty good). Sylvain did his own shit and then became an NYC cab driver! And Jerry Nolan was in the London Cowboys, then died right after Thunders in January of '92. EDIT: That could have been $250,000, I'm not pulling out Please Kill Me right now. But that would be even crazier, because he was just walking around with the money in his jacket pocket. Edited March 13 by Curt McGirt 1 1

But that would be even crazier, because he was just walking around with the money in his jacket pocket. This. After the Dolls blew up for good, everyone involved knew it was best to leave it alone since the personalities were never going to mesh. Plus, Johansen was too big at that point to slum with junkies. And by the later-part of the 80's no one in America wanted to deal with Thunders. He had spent most of the early-80's annoying and holding up/burning everyone who who booked him in America. And if he got gigs it was basically only a freak show deal of - Hey! Come see Thunders possibly die on stage! IF he shows. By the latter-part of the 80's Johnny mostly was living in Europe where he somehow had not burned all his bridges...yet. He was also always able to make a quick buck in Japan (it boggles my mind how Thunders survived in Japan with the habit he had). He'd come back to America mostly to con the unsuspecting and dig around for a new record deal. I mean, Jerry Nolan was his best friend and even he wouldn't be able to deal with Thunders for long periods of time. Tubi used to have Looking for Johnny available for streaming. Boy are the last 10 years of his life grim and seedy. It's highly recommended just to make you feel better about your own life. Kane cleaned up and converted to being a Mormon in 89, per his wiki page. Conversely the Arthur Kane movie, New York Doll, is just heartbreaking. (No pun intended?) 1
Curt McGirt Posted March 21 Posted March 21 Yeah, New York Doll was rough. I would blame the church for breaking his mind but he'd already done that himself. He was a shell. Probably the most depressing thing I read about Thunders was in Please Kill Me where they revealed he was a macho Italian that beat on all his girlfriends. And yeah I have NO IDEA how he survived in Japan. The story about Poison Idea going there in the '90s in Jerry A.'s book didn't make it look possible because those guys survived on coke and dope and liquor. I mean, Pig Champion was a crack dealer that used his own product! 1

Curt McGirt Posted April 8 Posted April 8 (edited) I think Al had been in rough shape for a little while, cancer IIRC. At least they finally got their albums reissued after 40 goddamn years. Guess it's time to go check in with Al Quint on Facebook, they knew each other forever. Clem Burke too? Jeez. I feel for Debbie. RIP EDIT: I'm dumb; I thought Clem was Chris Stein. Still, it's gotta be crushing for all of them. Al Quint actually only got to know Barile recently pretty well, though they both kicked around Boston forever. Al's wife Nancy, who was a big part of the Boston HC scene as well, has to be fucked up over this. They were together forever. And yeah, go figure: cancer. Edited April 8 by Curt McGirt 1
Curt McGirt Posted April 8 Posted April 8 Christ. Dave Allen, bass player for Gang of Four, died too. Guess there's your third.
Curt McGirt Posted April 8 Posted April 8 (edited) Quote Hi Everyone, I wanted to let you know that Al Barile passed away this morning. I was with him. You all know he fought a hard, hard battle. He spent his last day with Chris, Jaime, Angie, and his best, dear friend Scott, and me, and even though he was on comfort care, it was clear he knew we were all there, and he was so happy about that. I never met anyone who was his own person as much as Al was. No one made me laugh more. There was always a story. We loved each other unbelievably, and my heart is crushed into a million pieces. I am so incredibly grateful for our 43 years together. I can’t even think of how to go on without him, but I know he will ALWAYS be with me. I take great comfort especially, in knowing he and Flippy are now reunited. I want you all to know how much Al appreciated your outpouring of love to him. It truly meant a great deal to him. You know I will have a lot to say about Al’s time on this earth and his impact and his legacy, as the days go on, but for now, I’m going to need some time to be with my closest friends and family. I like this picture because if you look in the back, you can see me with a giant smile on my face, falling in love ~ Nancy Edited April 8 by Curt McGirt 1
Dolfan in NYC Posted April 9 Author Posted April 9 Singer Ruben Perez was among the (currently) 79 people who were killed in the roof collapse of a nightclub in the Dominican Republic. Allegedly in a video taken moments before the accident, he can be seen pointing at the roof, but he kept performing.
Curt McGirt Posted April 15 Posted April 15 (edited) Les Binks passed away. One of my favorite drummers ever. He was just so tasteful and rock-solid. Curt McGirt Posted April 16 Posted April 16 That's as mysterious as his disappearance was from Priest -- and publically -- was.
