OCT WRESTLING CHIT CHAT THREAD

RIPPA

Recommended Posts

I checked TNA's site to see how many dates they still had listed, and they're in Cincinnati on Nov. 7 at the Comcast Gardens, formerly the Cincinnati Gardens, an 11,000-seat arena. Ticketmaster's tickets page shows they're gonna tarp off one-third of the arena, which is laughable.

This is completely insane. They'll be lucky to draw 2,000, so anyone (and I literally mean anyone) would look to book a place that holds 2,000. Bound to be cheaper than an 11,000-seat arena that will be AT BEST one-fifth full. There's gotta be somewhere else in Cincinnati they could've gone. if not, don't go there.

I liked that little time period where Arn Anderson got wins over Flair and Hogan. It was about 10 years too late, but still.

Didn't he beat Hogan twice? I felt like he beat Hogan by DQ one week and then the women's shoe to the face the next week. Or maybe I'm thinking that Hogan took the women's shoe to the eye in consecutive weeks and lost to Arn and Flair.

This is exactly what happened.

TNA did a show last year in Highland Heights, KY (about 10 minutes south of Cincinnati) on the campus of (then) division II school Northern Kentucky University. They blocked off at least half of the arena, if not 2/3... they drew about 800 people.

They've run the Showare Center in Kent, Wa (about an 8000 seat arena) a couple times and each time have probably drawn 600-800 people. Their advertising for house shows is laughable.

From the newest Observer (some of this is old, but still funny):

A leaked memo from a few years ago stated a few things. Vince has said that nobody going forward can use the phrase “Granddaddy of them all” for WrestleMania. He feels it makes WrestleMania feel old and dated. Also, nobody is allowed to use the phrase “choke” for a submission move. Undertaker’s Hell’s Gate has also been named the “Triangle Submission hold” even though it’s a gogoplata, which is not a triangle although it looks sort of similar. Kevin Dunn stated announcers can no longer use the phrase “title changes hands.” Vince has banned the use of terms “Five star match” and “Match of the Year.” It’s funny, because when Arn Anderson does agent reports, he loves to use the “five star match” phrase for a match that tears down the house. As part of the memo banning those terms he also wanted all announcers to “stop reading the dirt sheets” with the idea it influences what they say. Funny, when they book for inside fans. Stephanie McMahon sent a memo for announcers to never use the phrase “the referee didn’t see it” when a heel is doing something behind the referees back. She wrote that it makes it seem like the announcers are treating the fans like they are in grade school. She would prefer “the referee’s vision was impaired” or “the referee’s vision was blocked.” Also, never use the word “hatred” or “hate” when describing a feud. Also, the announcers should never say a talent doesn’t care about winning a match. Also, when somebody is bleeding, never make references to it or use the word blood.

Funny. When you're a WWE announcer, it's like also being a publicist.

Hey everyone! It's the annual event where Meltzer gets worked. At this point, I'm pretty sure Vince is just fucking with Dave.

My point is, is there nowhere smaller for them to play in these areas? I know a lot of smaller places aren't built for wrestling like a lot of theaters, but I'd rather book a high school gym over an arena if that's what it takes to keep costs down. And why didn't they learn the lesson the first time they drew 800 in an 8,000-seat arena?

Why TNA doesn't just book theater's is mind numbing. It's better to sell out a 2,000 seat theater than 2,000 seats in a 10,000 seat building. I guess it goes into that BS theory that in order to look big they need to run big buildings. That's a load of crap. In order to be big, they need to not bleed money out the wahzoo. Of course it's way too late for them to even to try and do that.

You know Theaters and Concert venues would give TNA an unique look and feel yet would feel intimate and familer to the audience as wrestling started in dimly lit small buildings and be completely different then the WWE so of course TNA would not do it

There is no reason that TNa couldn't sell out every arena in KY running Sting and Steven Borden v Hulk and Kamal Hogan.

ADR is just awful. Guy has pretty much turned the WHC into a glorified midcard US title.

You know things are bad when your wrestling career arguably peaked when you ran over Santa.

The WWE has been booked for shit for a while. Traditionally top star has the world title and the rest of promotion has been built around building up opponents for top star/world title. For some reason they've ignored that formula since 97 and so you have Cena not having belt for majority of time and promotion unclear as to wether the goal is to build opponents up for title or build opponents up for Cena. But blaming that on ADR is stupid.

I honestly can't think of a good singles match he had which didn't involve an above average worker (Scott Taylor, Eddy).

The most common matches you come up with as best (Benoit Road Wild, RAW 10 man tag, Spring Stampede 99 tag) all involve other great workers too. His mini push at the end of 98 produced some horrible matches with great workers and great build up and pretty ordinary selling on his behalf too.

Why would that matter?

Outside of the recent Mania Taker series, I can't think of a good match HBK had when matched against a great worker. No one holds that against him.

Not sure why being good at one man shows is somehow valued as being more important than being able to step up to the plate and perform in a two man show.

The last two times Hogan came back to WWE he beat people he had no business beating, so not just no, but hell no.

Who?

That would be Shawn Michaels and Randy Orton.

Actually beating Michaels would've been fine if they'd had more than one match, but beating Orton was pointless.

Hulk humiliating Shawn by making him lay down forever before he hit the leg drop was the best. Shawn does all those cartoonish bumps thinking he is getting the last word and Hogan destroys him. It was so bad Shawn tried to do the whole "Uh Uh, I let you win." the next night on Raw.

Shawn vs. Bret at Survivor Series '92 comes to mind.

Also Shawn vs. Vader, overbooked clusterfuck that it was.
