NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 13 in Tokyo Dome 1/4/19

Speaking about juniors, now I'm 100% sure that Hiromu is coming back. That hype video that was shown during WK had frigging Hiromu's promo and showed burning fuse during BotSJ finals announcement. Thats a bit too much "false advertising" if he wasn't coming back.

in the shower I was trying to think of a way forward for NJPW and came up with the following. it's mad because NJPW picked up steam overseas before Omega was even a junior in NJPW but I think many see the company and him as synonymous. however:

- cancel Dome 2. you can't do it justice now. it was a bad idea. get rid of it before it becomes a millstone.
- get Oka and Kawato back in the first half of the year and ensure neither has a stupid gimmick. I propose the gimmicks of "their actual names".
- similarly get Beefy Boy Kitamura back in and put him in the mix on a lower title, say the tag straps with a veteran to guide him.
- turn Will Ospreay into the new foreign ace. I'm not a huge fan but while Kenny gets WWE'd to fuck, Ospreay can look cool.
- Shingo goes heavyweight.
- longer contracts that don't finish right after the Dome. you're stable now, 1 year is bullshit.
- while we're chopping wood, maybe this is where we quietly move Honma on and some of the cheeseballs cluttering up Bullet Club
- goes without saying but need to try and entice someone to make the jump to them, be that Nakamura or KENTA from WWE, or a domestic player who can work. Nakajima, Aoki, Hino, CIMA, Strong BJ would all be on my shopping list. We're in fantasy realm now though.
- nail down Ibushi somehow and push him strongly
- ??
- become #1 promotion!

undecided on Jericho. he's done well and it works, but also I think hitching their wagon to his star might not be best.

I also think, somewhat ironically, that the Omega/Tana animosity made more sense for their not following it all along. The English announce crew did a good job explaining things; Kenny wasn’t rambling/contradicting himself; the match itself was very narratively consistent. It’s a real credit to both men, and perhaps an even bigger credit that I don’t think it’s close to either’s best. (It’s also a real credit to Okada, a better opponent for both, who also did better with White than either. It’s weird, but I’m honestly ready for another stupid long run with the belt for him. I want more main event happy-clap dropkicks and rainmaker swing dancing, all of it.)

I agree with all this, especially the bold.

I prefer Kazuchika Okada to Hiroshi Tanahashi as I've followed him and NJPW since January 2012 when I became a fan of both. I also became a fan of Tanahashi in that time frame. Okada hooked me first. There's little between him and Tanahashi though, two all time greats.

It sounds like Kenny really is done with New Japan. Sorry @Oyaji

Looks that way to me. Reminds me of Wrestle Kingdom 10 aftermath when Shinsuke Nakamura, AJ Styles, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson were leaving the company.

Except those were deals done late in the day and clear cut. Guys gave notice, they were gone.

The more I think about it, the less i buy any of it. The Elite are far too important to both NJPW’s expansion and AEW’s inception. The relevant parties here are too smart and too passionate to drop the ball in either court. I suspect there’s a good 1-2 year plan already etched out.

Yeah, I have this feeling that this will be a set-up for an inter promotional feud between both companies. It has to be. If not, then I’ll eat a hat.

I didn't listen to all of the WOR, but from what Dave was saying, the issue is basically ROH. And New Japan have a contract with ROH at least through the MSG show. Said things might change after that.

All the rumors out there continue up be the WWE has made an offer of stupid money to Kenny. Basically, if WWE doesn't get him, it'll be because he refuses to go there under any circumstances, not because of a lack of trying.

He also said AEW feels confident they'll get him, but far from convinced.

I'd read a report by Meltzer saying WWE's offered Omega a large amount of money to jump on over.

I was reffing Dave saying Omega was gone and AEW wouldn’t get him. I’m pretty sure we don’t need Dave to tell us Vince is offering mega bucks to major players outside his casino.

The Ibushi stuff sits. Pretty sure they would have called an audible that close to the end. Will can be reckless, but not that reckless.

So the plan all along was to stretcher Ibushi, and write him off for a month. Sure seems like that's noteworthy, these days.

It's not just the second dome show, either. There are big shows in the US and England as well, in big buildings that road-to cards aren't going to fill. Either New Japan's made several big mistakes, or they're keeping/adding some big stars.

hope you're right but it's not like they've made loads of smart expansion moves (Back to Yokohama Arena, Cow Palace)

They are also basically trying to tour in two different continents at the same time with these New Beginning shows. So they are doing lots of crazy things this year.

I also wonder how much of this is Meij's direction rather than what Gedo would want given what he has to work with.
