SOCCER - AUTUMN 2018

Dolfan in NYC

Miami's voters overwhelmingly approved the new non-taxpayer funded 25,000 soccer stadium/public park yesterday.   So Inter Miami is happening.   They'll begin play in 2020.

San Diego's hopes for an MLS team died yesterday also.  Their bid to take a plot of land for their stadium was defeated.

Torn on either watching the first leg of the Superclásico Copa Libertadores final on Saturday or going to the Orlando SeaWolves (indoor football club) debut friendly double header (Colombia/Brazil friendly at 3:05 PM and then the SeaWolves/Brazil national minifootball team at 7:05 PM) as up close row seating tickets are $15.

Atleti just beat Athletic 3-2 at the Wanda with an extra time game winning header. Great game.

The first leg of the Copa Libertadores final has been postponed due to rain.

Dortmund beat Bayern 3-2, Reus x2 and Alacer outscoring Lewandowski's brace. It is indeed notable that Bayern lead Dortmund twice during the game. Only saw the Highlights, but Bayern seemed to dominate the first 45. Dortmund went on a tear in the second half, though.

Liverpool 1-0 up after a Mitrovic goal disallowed for offside, quick free-kick and Salah goal off of the back of two passes and thirteen seconds of elapsed time.

I think Mitro was onside tbf, so it is a shame to have had the good work we had done up until that point undone in such a fashion.

Betis beat Barça 3-4 at the Camp Nou, but the result should have been 1-4 or 2-4 at best. First goal for Barcelona was a controversial PK on a foul that may have been outside of the box on Jordi Alba and the second goal was clear offside from Munir leading up to his assist to Vidal. Firpo almost completed a brace, but a poor shot selection got saved by ter Stegen so it could have even ended 3-5.

Barcelona's defense is bad and a ter Stegen howler awarded Betis their third goal. Also, Rakitić got a red card for 2 yellows. Next game is a road game at the Wanda against Atleti without Rakitić who's one of their best players.

2-2 intense Copa Libertadores first leg. Benedetto had the game winner at his feet, but Armani had a massive save.

Tevez had to tell Boca to keep their heads up as it felt like a loss to them even though it's not.

OK, Question. See how England are bringing Wayne Rooney back for the game against Team USA to give him an international retirement ceremony? Are the American fans taking this as being disrespectful, that a semi-retired guy is being given a ceremonial send-off in what is supposed to be a competitive game (I mean, it's a friendly, but it's also supposed to be a tune-up for England vs Croatia later)? Because the English media, or bits of it at least, are saying it makes a mockery. OR is the fact that Rooney's a top star in the MLS making it look like from an American perspective it makes perfect sense for him to be at Wembley, because top players play in top games?

It makes sense to do the Rooney thing vs the US since he is playing in MLS now. I’ve seen some people say the FA came up with the idea to try and boost flagging ticket sales.

Since it’s a friendly, I’m not as bothered by the idea as some. It would be smart for them to rest Kane, Dele and Sterling before the Croatia match.

Fans here are actually a lot more savvy than you think and realize this is an exhibition and essentially a glorified training exercise. No sane person should have any problem with this whatsoever. On the subject of MLS players from England it would be real cool if for a meaningless friendly they gave BWP a cap in recognition of being arguably the greatest goal scorer in MLS history. Guy had absolutely nothing handed to him and through hard work and determination became a legend. You have to be great when a team retires your number while you are still active like we did.
