I respect your views Bad Boy. I think we can have this discussion without it getting too intense.

I felt we were having a fairly non-intense conversation. Sorry if you feel otherwise.

Good takes, @Elsalvajeloco. Re: Kevin Hart's longterm prospects, that sounds like a fair assessment. At the same time, for right now, he has a couple projects in the pipeline and isn't struggling to find himself a lucrative payday. So in that sense, I don't think he's a shining example for @TheVileOne hold up as a victim of the mob. Now if he makes continued unforced errors and fails walk the straight and narrow like he knows he needs to right now, I'm sure some of his more powerful friends will cut bait (which I have no problem with; actions have consequences and nobody wants to tie their career to someone who's only going to drag them down). Can he have any gig he wants at the moment? No. But for the here and now, he's a guy with Ellen giving him a venue for his "Please forgive me" interview. In that way, I don't count him as a victim of anything except foot-in-mouth syndrome.

Re: His stand-up special, what were its shortcomings? I hadn't heard anything.

I'm not the most versed person when it comes to UFC. Just as a casual observer, it's wild to see that company keep him in the spotlight considering how prominently he plays footsie with some major pieces of garbage. It'll be interested to see what finally does it when he goes too far even for them.

I'm also surprised by how much access he continues to have to "reputable" guests given some of the fringe nuts he's happy to platform. Definitely not someone I see struggling on account of the ubiquitous mob. But you're definitely onto something about him benefiting from getting in early.

@TheVileOne, I know demonetization on Youtube takes cash out of his pocket. But I've seen enough Youtube demonetization drama to not take it seriously. As far as I can tell, everyone on every single side thinks tech companies are out to get them.

He's not a victim of the mob (if' we're using that term) yet because Hollywood is protecting him until they've got all they need out of him. Once that happens, it's over for him. So in that sense, his powerful Hollywood friends aren't cutting bait as much they're stepping aside to let the mob at him. Unfortunately, especially from what he said about Katt, Kevin is one of those delusional dudes who believes just because he's one of the few successful black dudes in Hollywood that it will stay that way because of talent and working hard or not giving white people problems on set. He has never figured out it's not a meritocracy and never has been. Now it's coming back to haunt him. People dgaf and will find old tweets he made 10 years ago or find jokes he made years ago to get him off the board. If people are saying he is gaslighting people just because he said black people don't care about Lil Nas X being gay (as in the black community aren't as homophobic as they make us out to be), he is in deep deep doo doo. We're moving past just an articulation issue. People will make up their own interpretations as to what he is saying. That's the mob. Does Kevin say stupid shit? Yes, but I don't see it as worthy as losing his career over.

I'm one of the FEW people on this board who like some of his comedy. This one just wasn't funny like AT ALL . He also had pyro between punchlines which was super weird. He had a special after that which came out this year but I haven't seen or seen many people talk about. But the one before that in 2016, which I'm talking about, pretty much guaranteed that I wouldn't be checking out anymore of his comedy. I know he has writers, but whoever is writing for him probably needs writers themselves.

He rarely does a show for them now. He probably does seven to eight UFC shows a year and those are exclusively PPV shows in North America. Right around the time the UFC got purchased, he made a statement that he would only be working PPV shows in the U.S. and nothing else. Everyone figured that he would transition out of the booth especially after he made such an issue about watching dudes give each other brain damage. Then, he just never did.

I think people see Rogan as a nutty motherfucker who they don't have really take seriously. For the UFC shows he does work, all the winning fighters who get interviewed by him after the fight beg to be on his show without knowing how problematic he is. This is the same guy who I heard on a soundbyte slip up and tell a black guy (I couldn't tell you which guest it was) who is mixed that it's like he has the body of a black guy and the brain of a white person and that's like the best of both worlds. He tried to fix it, but it's Joe Rogan so you know how that goes.

My new fantasy is a standalone Weather Wizard movie with no connection to the Flash, where you can tell the director really wanted to make natural disaster porn.

Can we get Roland Emmerich to make this movie?

I don't know what movie that asshole was watching.  Joker oozing all over Rachel at the Wayne cocktail party was just as much about him being in control over a woman as it was luring Batman out for a showdown.

I think the issue here is that people watch Joker and see the classic story being played out of the abused becoming the abuser and they're confusing it with a story of righteous revenge when it's really not.

I have had arguments in the past with people about the movie, Chronicle, who sympathize with Andrew (played with beautiful conviction by Dane DeHann) and assume that him going on a telepathic rampage after being beat down by society is totally justified.

Josh Trank even took the time to insert a scene where Andrew tears a spider apart with his powers

as an example of how Andrew is a telekinetic serial killer in the making and is practicing what he'll eventually do to humans on bugs and auto wrecks and asshole are still, "His dad is so mean and I can't wait for Andrew to use his powers on him!"

Wait, what~?  If Andrew kills his father, that's still a bad thing, folks.

Yeah, people can be terrible and from the opinions of oppressed Twitter dorks, apparently that is supposed to come with a death sentence.

We are all stupid.

It is a sad thing that Arthur slips through the cracks, but Gotham does not deserve to have the homicidal madness of the Joker unleashed upon an unsuspecting citizenry.

Hello. I saw Joker last night and I loved it.

My fear based on early word was that he would either be too sympathetic or they would display him as a hero figure. Thankfully, neither are the case. I did have some sympathy for him early on but that quickly disappears when he you see he's a very, very bad person. A friend asked me if he was a sexist incel, I don't really know where that comes from.

Joaquin Phoenix should obviously get an Oscar nomination, I'd like to see Hildur Guðnadóttir get one as well for the amazing score.

I concur with all you say, @Ligerbusa.

I looked forward to Joker Movie (2019) on account of the character, Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime, the makeup test, the trailers especially trailer one I kept watching back and the posters all appealed to me. I hoped the film wouldn’t fall at the final hurdle. The concern wasn’t merited, this was great!

The movie’s very dark showing the man before the monster. How one can be turned based on ones circumstances. There’s also a commentary on class, have and have not’s in society. A scene near the end is perfectly done with the visuals and audio. Joker’s a new entry into my list of the best comic book movies.

Joaquin Phoenix is terrific as Arthur Fleck/the Joker and deserves the Academy Award for Best Actor. I’d like to see the Cinematography by Lawrence Sher and Hildur Guonadottir’s Score rewarded from the Academy. Best Picture nominee be nice too.

Spoiler thoughts:

Best scene was Joker using his blood as a smile while standing on the cop car and cheered by the clown rioters. That’s the scene I was referring to. That will be THE scene for Phoenix’s Joker like the magic trick and interrogation with Batman was for Heath Ledger’s Joker. I’d also want to single out when Arthur meets Bruce with the nice nod to Bruce sliding down the pole play set and Joker on the Murray Franklin Show.

The reveal that Arthur was physically abused as a child by his Mother’s boyfriend. I mouthed Jesus at that revelation.

Rioters killing Bruce Wayne’s parents due to the influence of the movement started by Arthur killing the Wayne Enterprises employees.

Just gonna throw this out there but "right-friendly dude gets demonetized by YouTube" means jack shit when soooooooo many LGBTQ channels get the same because simply being queer is apparently considered too sexually explicit for Our Google Overlords.

Just saw Joker and here's my thoughts:

NO ONE is placed in a sympathetic light in this movie. Joker, his mother, the police, other people, Thomas Wayne, Murray Franklin, etc

I was surprised by the scene on the Murray Franklin Show. I thought Arthur Fleck would just spend the entire time laughing and what happened to Murray Franklin would not be real (like his imagined relationship with the neighbor down the hall).

The whole movie is a homage to Martin Scorsese but with newer film stock. The theme  isn't memorable at all -- but the choices of songs in the movie would be pure Scorsese. "That's Life" at the end is like something he would do. I almost wished they gotten Bernard Hermann's theme to Taxi Driver to show up in the movie somehow.

Incredible film.  Beautifully shot and Phoenix's performance was otherworldly. Controversy was overblown.  There's a problem with gun violence and mental health in this country and Joker explored those and dealt with a lot of tough issues in society.   I can see why it's already off to a great start at the box office.

Have you seen this?

Long story short, certain words in the title or tags lead to instant demonitisation. Words like 'Gay' or 'Homosexual' are on the list. Words like 'Straight' and 'Heterosexual' are not.

The thing that surprised me was:

Thomas Wayne virtually running for mayor as a stand-in for Trump with similar promises and unseemingly behavior (the movie really does make you wonder if Arthur Fleck is his son on the basis of Penny Fleck not being his biological mother). Thomas Wayne is also another call back to Taxi Driver along with the clowns' locker area being like the taxi drivers' car area.

Well, for all the hype and controversy... That was a middle of the road film with a mediocre script, a really good but not revelatory lead performance. Really well shot, but multiple stretches of it are actually pretty boring.

I was noticing a lot of the Taxi Driver vibes for sure,  even with the trailers giving off that impression.. it wasn't note for note but damn there were a lot of similarities.

I think 30 years from now we'll be talking about Joker much as that movie is still discussed to this day.   What a film.  I'd go see it again probably to look for stuff I missed but I'll wait for the 4K blu ray.

Also,  anyone who said Phillips wanted nothing to do with making a comic book movie couldn't be further from the truth.  This was a great film but there was also a lot of comic book elements and callbacks in there if people are familiar with the material.  Phillips was bullshitting about not using any source material,  it's plain as day.

DC Studios must be happy that they've got another hit on their hands even though this movie strikes me as similar to Shazam! in that it doesn't feel like it is fully entrenched in the DCEU proper in the same way that Aquaman is.

That's gotta hurt a little even if you're raking in the big dollars, but the whole point is to coalesce all of these properties under one umbrella.

It's literally not part of the DCEU at all.

That was sorta my point.  How much service do you do for the DCEU when your biggest money makers so far are outside of the scope?  Is that the path you really want to go down where the largest draws do not contribute to your meta?

I'm not sure I understand. Shazam is in it, and very explicitly so. This movie isn't set in that universe (allegedly the reason it's set in the 70's was because Phillips wanted to avoid the DCEU completely)

They decided after Justice League to very much not try and do the Marvel thing and connect every movie. They still have some set in that universe, but they are being designed to only loosely connect. With other movies being completely separate. They have completely given up on the MCU model.
