*NEW* DC MOVIE THREAD

You're just saying 'almost' so someone can point out an example of how your statement is incorrect (Thor Dark World, Ragnarok, Black Panther), and you can be all "But I said almost". Besides, what are you even saying? The movies look like they take place in real cities in America. Well, most of them are set and shot in real cities in America. What do you expect them to look like?

I'm talking about things like the color grading and the use of a lot of the same angles. The Russos were celebrated for their work on Winter Soldier because they did some cool shit with handheld and filmed the action sequences outside of the norm.

Watched Aquaman with my brother and father last night. We all enjoyed it a good deal. Its probably most fun I've gotten from any of the live actions DC flicks in a good while. Loved Momoa as Aquaman. Loved the story of Black Manta. The action was good and the effects were great

I mean, I'd take Coogler over them without even a moment of considering.

I loved Black Panther as much as everyone else but that third act..  action wasn't inspired and CGI was worse than the usual big budget action flick.  I know he can do action because Creed was awesome and even the casino scene in BP was good..  but I don't know what that 3rd act was.

I don't know if Coogler could have handled a movie like Infinity War.  There's a ton of moving parts. He's great with small scale,  small stakes, personal stories.

It wasn't great, but if was a significantly better version of the last battle in Winter Soldier.

Marvel has had a trend for years now of the climatic action sequence being the worst in the movie, and the Russos are the biggest culprits.

I agree with the first part but I disagree with the Russos being the biggest culprit.  The scene in Infinity War on Titan was some of the best action I've seen out of the MCU.  Doctor Strange vs. Thanos was worth the price of admission by itself.

A lot of the shit Wan was doing in Aquaman we haven't seen in any comic book movie to this point.

Double post aside, Winter Soldier is the template I'm talking about. Opening ship attack was awesome, middle fight in the streets good, climax not good. And that's been the ongoing theme ever since.

I realize I'm the only person that liked AoU, but Infinity War was my least favorite of the Avengers movies, and I still think Johnston made the best Cap movie.

Aquawho?

Black Panther wouldn't rank in my top five MCU films. Winter Solider and Infinity War beat it by a large margin for me. Might be even with or just beat out Civil War.

Man, can't agree with this mindset (specifically on Civil War) just on grounds of the bad guys in Black Panther are so well done that they out weigh most of the flaws of the movie (Most notably the generic action scene in the 3rd act). Claw and Killmonger are both in that Loki-Thanos class of besr MCU villians were as Civil War had one of the blahest villians in the entire run.

Personally speaking I kinda tier the MCU movies as opposed to out right ranking them. Top tier for me is generally Iron Man, Winter Soldier, Infinity War, Black Panther, Guardians, and I think Ragnarok would just push into that class too. The tiers beloe that are a little more "depends on my mood" but those 6 clearly outside the others to me.

I mean with Wan bringing his horror background to scenes like the Trench and the tracking shots in Italy and the world building that went into Atlantis and the underwater effects,  a ton of shit we've never seen in a comic movie..   he took a script that was let's face it..  not that great and he turned out a really cool fucking movie because he's just that creative of an individual.

I think what he did was way more creative than most of the paint-by-the-numbers action you get in a standard Marvel movie

In other words Wan could have done a serviceable Ant-Man,  Thor,  Doctor Strange type origin flick that hit all the Batman Begins notes and it would have been okay..  it would have been another Venom (Hardy brings Venom up a notch just with how insane he was in that) and people would have said ohhh ok Aquaman..  cool I guess..

But he didn't do that at all.  Yeah, it had some of those scenes thrown in there but the rest of the movie was bringing the wow factor.

Loved Claw, but he wouldn't be in the Loki-Thanos class for me. I would put him closer to Hela. I liked Killmonger well enough, but something about him just never fully hit home with me. Civil War had a weak villain, but it was always more about the conflicts between heroes and consequences of their actions. Thinking about it more I actually probably would still put Panther ahead of of it, but not by a large margin.

I were to put the films in tiers Winter Soldier & Infinity War would be top. Next tier would be Ragnarok, Homecoming, & GOTG Vol. 2. Next tier would probably be Iron Man, Black Panther, Ant-Man & Wasp.

Aquaman has already passed Justice League in worldwide box office totals and is less than $2 million from passing Man of Steel too, making that a pretty sure bet. Wider gap for domestic though it's at around $168 mil there too so pretty impressive all around. Can't see it not getting a sequel and further driving the direction of future DC films.

It just had one of the best 2nd weekend holds for a comic book movie ever.  $51M+  down just 24%.  It's currently sitting at an estimated $748M worldwide already surpassing well tons of comic book movies..

TTGTM was really good.

The Back in Time montage was hilarious and dark, Stan Lee's cameo is one of his best and that final line was something else!

Passes MoS and Suicide Squad. It's at $70m or so behind WW and $120m behind BvS. Domestic it's still at the lowest spot but if the drops keep small it's not inconceivable it becomes the top grossing film in the franchise overall and maybe #2 or 3 domestically. Not bad.

And don't forget, the people posing the biggest threat to the new king's legitimacy snuck into the technological Fort Knox of the most advanced nation on the planet... by wearing the Baltimore Uniform. Including an obviously white guy in their party!
