[TV] SEPTEMBER 2018 DISCUSSION

Missed a great chunk of both of them because SOA came on right in the middle but the last two eps of Snowfall were pretty good.

Spoiler

Dig how Franklin's finally put together the pieces about the Nicaragua operation. Also how they've made the DEA agent up to be a parallel to Agent Stahl in SOA in a way -- the nasty bitch that you hate for doing her job. The little bit about "no heroin, no marijuana, only coke for the rich" really made me despise her. With how these shows go, I'm sure her time will come eventually.

The Duece has been given a third season by HBO but it also announced that said third season will be its last

This is a show about the end of one thing and the beginning of another...and the second era has already started.  After the last episode, I was already starting to think..."this has to end soon."

Do they jump forward again? Is everybody old and starting their own DVD companies next?

I'm guessing it'll be set in the '80s till I have a reason to believe otherwise.

Odd note: The porn show with James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal is going to get one fewer season than Treme. I love Treme, but that's wild. Then again, immediate commercial success has never been Simon's bag, baby.

Well, shit. Sons of Anarchy got me invested again in the middle of S6. The Irish stuff got wrapped up a little too nicely (so far?), but I'm enjoying it. I guess the first few episodes lagged a bit but it picked up again.

Has a show ever become so culturally dated so quickly as HIMYM?

Barely ended 3 years ago, and it just feels from another era. Feels more at home in the late 90s crash TV range if anything.

Well the ending pissed me off so much that I haven't watched any reruns at all. . . .

I stopped watching HIMYM around season 5 or 6, but I imagine a lot of Barney's scenes with women are probably creepier now than they were then. And, the other characters are usually laughing at his antics. Compare Barney Stinson as a character to someone like Dennis on Always Sunny where the other characters are completely aware that he's a messed up and awful person are are terrified of him.

If Ted Danson gets outed as a creep, Cheers immediately becomes unwatchable. I made a poor choice marathoning that last year. Great show though.

I also quit watching HIMYM by the time season six rolled around. It already felt like it was spinning its wheels. I feel bad for the people who stuck it out.

I've been watching it for the first time this year and I'm up to season 8. Great show, but yeah some of Sam's antics and never taking no for an answer were pretty cringy. Danson is pretty great on the show, but that stuff makes it unwatchable if he was ever to get outed.

I had suspected he was a nut before, but that confirmed it. He is a guy who would either be a rich famous actor or a serial killer. There iss a middle ground.

What's worrisome is that he might be both.

Yeah, I'm already bored by Mayans. I can't find it in me to give a shit about motorcycle gangs or all of their melodrama.

The Bastard Executioner sounds like the most edge-lord title ever too.

Yeah, I bounced off Mayans hard. Maybe I was expecting too much, but I was quite disappointed. The Bastard Executioner sounds really interesting, I will try to track it down. I still need to find the second season of Justified, for some reason I missed the whole thing and I thought it was a great show.

This is pretty much my exact opinion.  The show was legitimately great for two and a half seasons, and then it became very clear that he had no idea where to go from there.  That should have been a show with a great 3 season run, but they just stretched it out until there was no creativity left.

Spot on. When you start rooting for the two leads (Jax and Gemma) to off themselves, the series has gone off the rails. I still think a sequel series with Chibs, Tig, and Happy fucking people up would have been most entertaining.

I'm into S6 of Sons of Anarchy and it's basically fallen off a cliff sometime during S5. This isn't looking too good for the rest of S6 and the last season.

Wait until you see how it wraps up, you will likely throw things at the TV. I don't think I've ever had quite such a love/hate relationship with a TV show as I did with SOA (although Dexter belongs in the discussion). If I never hear Katey Sagal sing again it will be too soon.

The seeds are all there. You've got three extremely crazy backstories to go into, a sympathetic lead in Chibs, a built-in story of trying to build an MC back from the ground up without going down the same route to self-destruction... but no.

I'd still like to see an SOA prequel about the first 9 forming the club after getting back from Vietnam, then chronicling how they started going down a corrupt path. Wasn't something like that supposed to be in the works at one point?

It still is. I think Sutter said it would come after Mayans or during it.

I don't like prequel series and Better Call Saul has been the exception and not the rule. Given how crummy and boring Mayans is, I don't have any faith in an SOA prequel being good.

I would imagine people won't give much of a shit about Mayans either because they were always played off as the second rate MC in SOA. I would much rather have a SOA follow up with Chibs, Happy, Tig, and a newby while they try to further distance themselves from the Real IRA and drug running, trying to stay legit, but overcoming obstacles to survive like how do you keep funding a MC by staying legit? Watching that balance play out would be more interesting than whatever boring as fuck MC serving the cartel storyline they're doing on Mayans.

Besides, don't we already know that the Galindo cartel is allowed to operate by the FBI and CIA and there are informants near the top of that organization? So why give a shit about the cartel or anything in Mayans?

I do believe that was my favourite season of Justified... or maybe the Drew Thompson one. I still miss that show, criminally underrated

Season 2 is my favorite one with Mags Bennett and her boys. Just great television. Is Drew Thompson Season 4? That was a great season as well. The first season was iffy for a little bit after the great pilot, but finished strong. The only season I'm eh on is the Michael Rapaport one.
