Was the WWF planning on signing Tenryu in 91 or did Vince hate Demolition so much that he'd let two Japanese guys go over on them?

It was part of the working agreement with SWS

Hogan beat Tenryu in the main event of the WWF/SWS show in the Tokyo Dome

What was up with Demolition Ax in New Japan in 1991? There's a random Ax/Keiji Muto match on New Japan World from February 1991.

Because of your post, I watched it and it's pretty boring and shitty.  Ax was just going through the motions but he was doing that towards the last half of 90 anyways.  I just imagined what it must've been like as a Japanese fan who knew nothing of Demolition to see this average looking man dressed in paint and bdsm gear trying to be a tough wrestler.  He wasn't doing any of the mannerisms of Ax either.  Sad, really.

I watched it as well. Outside of the change to Ax's mask, there isn't anything worth going out of one's way to see.

I'm sure some of the crowd was familiar with him from previous trips to Japan. Ax does say in his shoot interview that his shellfish allergy was due in part to his trips to Japan.

Compared to Japanese porn, I would think seeing a flabby, middle aged man in BDSM gear is nothing out of the ordinary.

Hadn't Ax parted ways with the WWE by then? I'm pretty sure he disappeared from TV after Survivor Series 90

Which was apparently a swerve from Hogan, who had agreed to lose originally. To the point where the media (who'd been told Tenryu was going over) were all filing their stories on Tenryu winning when they looked up at the monitors and Hogan went over instead...

Demolition was done at that point. I don't think they did anything of note after Survivor Series 90. I think they needed to put over the Tenryu team strongly and not fully kill the card. Demolition were a name, so it was better than a jobber match. It is a sad ending for a great team. Without Ax guiding them, things fell apart. They had a match with the Rockers in 91, that is the worst match either team ever had.

My personal favorite was when Jim Ross would always put over that Mike Rotundo won the Punt, Pass, and Kick competition...when he was a child.

Like winning a football skills contest as a child was important in putting over that Mike Rotundo has a chance at regaining the NWA Television Championship from Sting.

I always chalked it up to Ross, and Watts actually, in Mid South having a Football Inferority complex, where the two of them always gushed about the football backgrounds of guys.  Ross just never stopped, even when going through WCW and WWF/E, where there was always a hint from JR that guys weren't "legit" unless they had a college background, and any kind of Football made someone top tier immediatly, since of course Football is superior to all sports, so if you were "good" enough to make the Browns practice squad, that already started you ahead of someone that only wrestled in high schoold.

I always felt like Ross always wished he'd ended up working in football instead of in phony rasslin, and his commentary always bore out that resentment.  Like, Stan Hansen was a bad motherfucker who held titles all over the world, but somehow he wasn't legit until Ross could mention his "playing for the Baltimore Colts" (he had a cup of coffee with the practice squad for fuck's sake).

I mean come on.  In kayfabe, wrestling is an individual sport and should be tougher than football.  Ross' constant fetishizing BY GAWD FOOTBAW made no damn sense.

I always felt like Ross wished he was a "legit" sports announcer too especially when he'd get into his football rants. I partly understand that, he knew he'd never get the kind of accolades he probably felt he deserved by announcing wrestling and probably hoped it would lead to other things, but it never really did. I only watched two XFL games but I don't remember his commentary being all that great but then again neither was the football.

It probably burns him that Tony Schiavone did manage to get out of Wrestling and into real American sports. And so did Johnathon Coachman and Todd Grisham. Remember, if you want a career in the media, it's better to be blandly handsome than talented and enthusiastic.

Speaking of Hansen’s football career, JJ Dillon talked about a rib the Funks played on Stan when he wrestled for them in the Amarillo territory. Stan announced that he was going to try out for the Detroit Wheels of the WFL and they gave him a big send-off from the territory. Unfortunately, he got hurt during the first week of camp and had to go back to the territory. He goes out to do his big return interview and the announcer immediately hits him with, “Joining us today is former Detroit Wheels star, Stan Hansen! Tell us about your storied football career.” Hansen got pissed and just left the interview looking like he wanted to kill someone as everyone in the back laughed their asses off. Terry Funk orchestrated the whole thing.

I think that being brought into the business by Bill Watts helped instill that in Ross. Watts pushes the "he played football" stuff big time when he was on commentary and all Ross did at the start of his announcing career was say "Hello welcome to Mid-South Wrestling, I'm Jim Ross along with Cowboy Bill Watts" then Watts would talk for the rest of the show.

Also, I think Watts pushed the football and insane "protection of the business" stuff because he came from football/amateur wrestling and was brought up to look down on pro wrestling, almost like it was to convince himself more than the marks that pro grapplers are just as tough and/or legit athletes as the other guys. Verne Gagne had some of that too but it was more shake his head and be like "well in amateur wrestling..." compared to "HE PLAYED FOOTBALL!!!" or tearing out some drunk's eyeball in a bar fight to "protect the business."
