Well no, that's true.

I kinda feel that depending on the time frame Vince would have just relied on JR for that aspect. Remember back when JR would just talk about a wrestler's football career? Usually King would reply with "Who cares?!"

Don't get me started on Jerry Lawler. I really liked JR's work with Jesse Ventura in WCW, where they would both bring up wrestlers college credentials. It helped legitimize the guys as real athletes, that they weren't just actors playing a part.

WWF JR was a whole different story. He started out fine, but then I wouldn't give a shit either if my boss fired me twice and mocked me for having bells palsy.

I saw rumors that Sasha is now injured also?  I haven't been in the Mixed Match Challenge thread because I'm behind.

That is correct. They didn't say what the injury is, but she is being replaced by Mickie James in the MMC.

Vice just put up a 15 minute doc about deathmatch wrestlers in Brooklyn:

Solid documentary. I have never heard of Casanova Valentine before nor did I know there was a pub in New York hosting no ring death matches in front of a drunken bunch of people who seem to a bit too close to the chaos. Apparently Valentine has worked for CZW once which is the biggest indy he's been booked for.

This has probably been posted a thousand times, but VICE did this other documentary which I thought was good on a CZW TOD from years ago:

No one gave a shit that a top wrestler was great at football when he was at school, unless it was part of his character.

My personal favorite was when Jim Ross would always put over that Mike Rotundo won the Punt, Pass, and Kick competition...when he was a child.

Like winning a football skills contest as a child was important in putting over that Mike Rotundo has a chance at regaining the NWA Television Championship from Sting.

I'm pretty sure Vince remembers Wahoo McDaniel. He might even remember Rod Smart as well.

Vince probably thinks Red Grange is still playing.

It's also funny how many wrestlers that never made it out of training camp or Injured reserve were seemingly put over as all-pros.

I noticed this yesterday when listening to Nattie on Jerichos podcast talking about Anvils career "playing for the Raiders and tom landrys cowboys."

Or better, The Raging Bull being the same Manny Fernandez as ghe former Dolphin.

I think that might be more of an American Football player thing than a Wrestling thing though. Look at the ex-NFL guys in the UFC, even the guys who never made it out of training camp still say they were NFL players.

I always chalked it up to Ross, and Watts actually, in Mid South having a Football Inferority complex, where the two of them always gushed about the football backgrounds of guys.  Ross just never stopped, even when going through WCW and WWF/E, where there was always a hint from JR that guys weren't "legit" unless they had a college background, and any kind of Football made someone top tier immediatly, since of course Football is superior to all sports, so if you were "good" enough to make the Browns practice squad, that already started you ahead of someone that only wrestled in high schoold.

Same premise, but now everyones history is much more available to fact check. Your average fan in Houma was not going to be able to collaborate Jim Duggans career at SMU or with the Falcons. Now, Dr Death, playing for OU and having Barry Switzer on putting him over, is a different matter.

I would think it predates them. You can probably trace it all the back to Nagurski's success and then guys from the TV era like Wahoo and Ladd and stars like Alex Karras wrestling in the off season.

It gives immediate athletic credibility. This guy was good enough to play division 1 football! You know he's athletic and double tough!

It doesn't seem like you guys know how hard it is to make it to D-1 college football or how hard it is to get a whiff of the NFL.

Yeah, but how many ex-College Football players have won UFC titles? Bellator titles? Strike Force titles? Pride FC titles? Boxing titles, kickboxing titles? Because a bunch of them have tried MMA... and if playing D-1 football or making the NFL made you legit enough to be a fighting sport champ, you'd think the real fighting sports would be dominated by ex football players.

I'm bored at home today and I just wanted to share some stuff with you guys that I remember from 1990's Puerto Rican wrestling which is what I grew up with:

There was an organization in Puerto Rico called WWA which was run by Barrabas back then I believe. Before they closed in the mid to late 90's, they had a working relationship with WWE. They had built a feud between the Undertaker who had worked some shows and Fidel Sierra. The feud was scheduled to culminate in a blowoff casket match, but the event was cancelled for unknown reasons and the match never took place. WWA then went off TV for a couple of weeks before they returned. At the time, WWA was running the basketball courts WWC usually runs their events at. When they returned, they began running events in someones garage before they eventually closed after 2 or so tapings in the garage.

Savio Vega was working for both the WWA and WWF. He had a similar role in both organizations and when he joined the Nation of Domination, he turned heel in WWA and had two guys dressed in black come to the ring with him as members of the Nation even though they were locals and not real members of the Nation. Savio was feuding with Bronco #1 at the time and Savio was the face and Bronco the heel until Savio joined the Nation and they changed roles.

In the mid to late 90's, WWC began creating nWo replica WWC t-shirts. During this time, the Glamour Boys had broken apart and began feuding with each other. WWC had a guy come out as a Sting Crow cosplay with a baseball bat and he would confront heels. I remember him coming out and confronting Sean Morley during a match. They built this for two weeks in a row and then they just entirely dropped the gimmick. To this day, I have no idea who that Sting Crow cosplayer was and no footage from those two weeks has ever surfaced.

I guess I should mention that one time a 60 year old guy pulled out a knife and threatened Pierroth right beside me and my friend in the stands and then waited for him in the parking lot and Pierroth had to be escorted by the police.

I remember Silver King and Jerry Estrada also worked that night. That was during the co-promotion/partnership WWC had with Promo Azteca.

WWC was great, but my favorite Puerto Rican organization was IWA by far. That was Victor Quiñones baby.

Back then, WWE never did house shows in Puerto Rico, but I got to see a lot of big names in IWA -- the Rock, Benoit, Jericho, Hardcore Holly,  Kane, the Hardyz, X-Pac, the Brood, Togo, Minoru Fujita, Togi Makabe as Dragon Makabe, TAKA, Edge, Christian, Gangrel, Tajiri, Otsuka, etc. A lot of the K-DOJO students spent endless years training in Puerto Rico and being job guys on smaller IWA TV shows in a faction with Fujita. They got recked week in week out by brutal Ricky Banderas chairshots.

Unfortunately a lot of that footage is lost. I used to post results from shows down in Puerto Rico back on the old yellow and green board. Good times, good times...

I agree with the NFL part but D1 football,  I take that as a case by case..  UConn is trash.   I've known some guys on the football team and they weren't that good in high school really,  UConn is all around a garbage football team right now.   There was a time where they were better though and putting a lot of guys in the NFL.

Pierroth having to deal with that in both PR and Mexico is hilarious

I totally got these two confused and thought Pierroth had to deal with them playing up his college football background. Like he got heat in PR because he played football at Mexico City University.
