He did have a thing about sticking things in people's asses, didn't he? I just assumed he was really fond of anal.

He also called Kevin Kelly a hermaphrodite quite a bit. Were the Rock's promos based on his beliefs or were they just sophomoric, unfunny material that was the norm of the Attitude Era? I don't know. If the Rock turned out to be a shitbag like Hogan, I have no problem saying fuck the Rock.

But we knew 20-30 years ago that Hogan was a piece of shit, the signs were all there, it just wasn't important then.

Similarly I'm sure the Rock will slip up and make a wrong comment years down the track about the LGBTQ community and we'll feel awkward because it was semi-acceptable at the time. And that's before we start sweeping AJ Styles' comments under the rug.

It's strange how in the context of things, Rock cutting grossly homophobic and anti-trans promos twice a week for about 10 years gets well overlooked.

Yeah, as a shitty teen, I loved that stuff without thinking about it, but as a less shitty adult, I find most of the Attitude Era unwatchable, tbh.

Obviously, this comes from a combination of getting older and current events, but I have a hard time watching wrestling promos and feuds built around racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc. I just find it not fun or entertaining. It just feels shitty to watch for me. People say, "Hey, it was a different time," but that doesn't mean that I'm going to feel okay about it in 2018.

EDIT: In fairness, that's not totally true. I can watch New Jack shred SMW fans all day. I guess what I can enjoy depends on power dynamics. I also have no problem watching Chyna punch dudes or watching Miss Jacqueline beat the shit out of Disco Inferno. Actually, now I think I'm going to go watch Jacqueline beat the shit out of Disco.

Pretty much my feelings also. I loved the Attitude era at the time, nowadays, I don't think I actively avoid watching it as such, but give it the wide berth that others on here seem to do with Benoit matches.

I overthink it too much, I can't be lost in that entertainment space or enjoy it for what it is, instead I'm going to sit there and cringe, and wonder why I enjoyed this at the time.

I hate to say it, but I found the Rock funny up until the song for Vikki Guerrero, then it hit me just how sophomoric his act was. Degeneration X always struck me as childish, but I have to admit to finding the Rock amusing once upon a time. I don't actively avoid watching the Attitude Era, it's just that I have so many other things I'd rather watch. Onita throwing fools into barbed wire and explosions never gets old...

Might just be I grew up on the Gulf Coast in a family full of shrimpers and fishermen, but I find Red Lobster's seafood to be horrible. But then so far I haven't found a chain place yet that has good seafood.

As an update, my wife just won $140 at the casino and it's seafood night. Crab legs are on the way! Happy birthday to me!

It’s been a long time since I took a deep dive, but any time I brush up against the Austin-McMahon feud I still find it enjoyable. I’m sure y’all can be can remind me of some of the low points.

With the low points of the Attitude Era, it also needs to be said as well:

As time marches on, social awareness also will march on.

As such, If your generation did social justice right, YOU WILL LIVE TO SEE YOURSELF BECOME THE VILLAIN, and it will be by something you could not possibly have seen coming in your era. It won't be because you were a bad person, but rather because social acceptance will get to a point that something that was virtually unknown- if not didn't even exist-  in your era (or even a safe target in your area) will suddenly get to the point where they get to be accepted as well.

This generation has just done social justice so well that it can be more noticable for even things from 20 years ago.

Not forgetting Lawler calling Goldust a ''flamin' fag'' on national television. As a teen growing up on a cocktail of late 90's Pro-Wrestling and South Park it was easy to get desensitized to the vulgarity. I can still watch the attitude era with an open mind, but some of it is quite appalling.

I recall Bruce saying on an episode of the podcast that Fink would only ever make it into the Hall posthumously. I don’t remember him elaborating.

Any notion of that being Fink’s choice? Or is this just another case of that company being run by shitheels?

Edit: I’m a fucking moron.

Speaking of things that shouldn't be socially acceptable, is Juice Robinson a furry?  That bear avatar on his gear is weird.

The story is weird, but that’s not it. To hear him tell it, he was hanging out with friends, and—for some reason—got goaded into getting an impulse tattoo. The tattoo artist wouldn’t do it, at first, but finally relented on the condition Juice pick from a page of cartoon animals—maybe this was supposed to dissuade him, but it didn’t. So, Juice got a cartoon bear on his ass—since he didn’t want to clear it with WWE, he wanted it to be mostly hidden—which still amuses him so much he puts it on his gear.

The low point was the Higher Power reveal. Then the end of an era match where the loser was suppose to be gone forever. Then Vince turns two months later.

I guess he stayed gone longer than the Authority.

It's funny to me how "flaming fag" is always the go-to for going after Lawler when if you actually watched his stuff in Memphis, there is SO MUCH worse to call him out over.  Mocking minorities for their big lips, embracing homophobia, and a major angle where he punched a woman in the face (which literally led to one of the biggest pops you'll ever see.)  Don't even pretend WWE corrupted him.  That was probably his idea.

It's fine that Rousey is a Sandy Hook truther, but not Aries?

She's 👏 not 👏 gonna 👏 fuck 👏 you👏

I wasn't aware of that but I'll look into it.  She doesn't seem bright.  I'm not fine with anyone being a Sandy Hook truther.  I would disown family members if it came to it.  Thankfully,  we aren't dumb as rocks over here in this part of CT.  Also,  Ronda isn't my cup of team,  thank you.

That is what we do. Win some money at the casino. Then go buy shrimp fresh from the gulf.

BTW Happy Birthday sir. Forgot that our birthdays are in the  same month.

How dare you, Barry Windham is an angel from heaven.

Speaking of Barry, how does everyone view the NWA title in 93? Does it qualify as a World title? I thought that was the second best run of Barry's career and think he was equal to Vader in terms of importance on the card. It was a shame that Barry's knee was messed up before the match with Ric Flair. So they had a decent mid card match, that was nothing compared to what they were doing in 1987.

I think people undersell the importance of the NWA belt today. Its nothing like the 70's or 80's, but its still cool to have that link to the past. I still think it could be a valuable asset in wrestling.

Was Barry defending the NWA Title at NWA Shows at the time? Were there even NWA shows or was it all under WCW? I consider him to be a World Champion. Now, if it happened later with that WCW International stuff, I would not say he was a world champion. Barry could have easily been champion in 87 or 88 in place of Ronnie Garvin.

Speaking of the NWA, I think Billy Corgan and Dave Lagana are doing an amazing job with it. I mean I'm actually invested into the outcome of a Flip Gordon match because of the Ten Pounds of Gold. I'm so glad the NWA World's Championship is being elevated again.

Didn't Brock make a bunch of homophobic comments in an ESPN interview several years back?

He just straight up said "I don't like gays."

I'm fairly surprised some of The Rock's old material hasn't come back to haunt him now that he's mainstream, but the current owner has literally said the N-word on tv, and the heir apparent did a blackface performance as a babyface. Wrestling seems to have some kind of weird immunity bubble for egregious bigotry, even relative the rest of the world where being a rich white man gets you out of most things unscathed. Shit, even Papa John had to symbolically leave his company before retiring to his castle and a lifetime of unimaginable wealth.

Chono won the tournament at the 92 G1 which was between NJPW and WCW wrestlers (still never seen that, is it worth looking up?) and dropped it to Mutoh who Windham then won it off so I guess you could still class it as a world title.

Barry was coming off my favourite run of his tagging with Dustin, so if he wasn't at his peak he was only just on the turn. IIRC from his shoot interview, he'd had cartilage in his knee replaced with cadaver material but it didn't take which was why that match went awry.

His run was definitely too late, but great for what it was. Loved the Lone Wolf character and refusal to rejoin the Horsemen and kowtow to Flair but if he'd stuck around in 85 instead of getting pissed about a payoff he'd have got it a lot sooner, Dusty was definitely grooming him as his top guy but had to switch to Magnum.

No he wasn't, which was a major point of contention among the remnants of the NWA and why the tag belts soon disappeared off the show and why it the heavyweight belt was rechristened. Someone did a pretty insightful write-up on that whole situation a while back but I can't find it. It was a stupid situation from the get-go basically

Y'all can continue with your bullshit discussion of disparaging remarks from days gone by now
