Really excited for the final. Think it's a great match-up. I think they'll burn it down.

Oh I think it’ll be a great match but I’m just wary of its potential problems. Every Tanahashi/Ibushi match has been great but they have one common flaw and it’s that, Ibushi never sells the damage of the leg work. That issue was a big problem in Ibushi/Naito about a week ago. I dunno why anybody tried to his leg since he never sells it.

Ibushi is best in matches that are absolute bombfests like the match against Omega or brutal slugfest matches like the ones against Ishii or Nakamura. He’s always missing something in working these slow-burn, psychology heavy matches that Tanahashi does.

I don't really get Tanahashi. I'm still new to New Japan really, and kinda know that's why. But still, I'd be pretty irked if he went over Ibushi.

I used to think ZSJ was kinda awful, but he's pretty much my favourite wrestler now. His relationship with TAKA is so awesome - the hug when Zack wins (I wrote 'they win' and corrected) is really believable. Taka really went all out to protect his boy in the tag matches, gave him his finish, works as cornerman without interfering (though you suspect he might one day if really needed). Sabre-gun is the future.

The best way I can put it is Tanahashi is the John Cena of NJPW and the guy that basically got them out of the dark ages in the mid 2000s. So pretty much 2 generations of NJPW fans have grown up with Tanahashi as the man. And I’d also be irked if he went over Ibushi. Ibushi isn’t as young as he looks (he’s in his mid 30s) and right now is the time take him to the next level.

Wait what is the context behind Rusev’s tweet?

I'm guessing he watched some of the G1 and thought it'd be fun in New Japan, hence the above, while also fueling (idle) speculation. Or he just saw the hype and wanted to have some fun.

Tomorrow's full card is out at noon Japan time, I believe. Rey Mysterio is in da house.

It's a Tanahashi match, it will be centered around leg work with Ibushi doing his once every two years selling the leg almost well performance. I still think Tenzan's going to run in and make it a three-way final.

Yeah, I hope/think Ibushi will make a concerted effort to sell the leg. Tanahashi, I would hope, should be forceful on the matter because he's not a dummy and this is the most important match in Ibushi's career. Ibushi considers him a god too, so he should listen to a god, gosh darn it.

On one hand, I’m very interested to see how the match is structured and the story it tells, the callbacks to their previous encounters, Nakamura references, maybe a OWA attempt by Kota (like Kenny did his moves when beating Goto)... but to be honest, on first watch I’m purely invested in Ibushi winning. I think they’ll try to get the crowd to that place as well, which might not be easy. Might require a lot of leg work, maybe some of it a little dirty. And maybe on his big comeback Kota blows a lot of that off. I won’t mind.

Sounds like Kenny will second. I wonder when the last time the IWGP champ did that is?

I have no idea who or what a Pro Wrestler Sengoku Enbu is, outside of an anime thing. but he's tagging with Rey and KUSHIDA against Okada and RPG3K.  Rest of the show looks like we're table setting for the road to Wrestle Kingdom.

  2. Toa Henare vs. Bad Luck Fale
  3. YOSHI-HASHI & Hirooki Goto vs. Taichi (YES!) & Takashi Iizuka
  4. David Finlay & Juice Robinson vs. Hangman Page & Cody
  5. Marty Scurll, Nick & Matt Jackson vs. Taiji Ishimori, Tanga Loa & Tama Tonga (interesting!)
  6. BUSHI, SANADA, EVIL, & Tetsuya Naito vs. El Desperado, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, Zack Sabre Jr., & Minoru Suzuki
  7. Jay White, Toru Yano, & Tomohiro Ishii vs. Chase Owens, Yujiro Takahashi, & Kenny Omega (oh shit, Ishii challenges @ Destruction?!)
  8. Pro-Wrestler Sengoku Enbu, KUSHIDA, & Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. SHO, YOH, & Kazuchika Okada
  9. Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Kota Ibushi

So is Rey Mysterio ever going to have a real singles match in NJPW before going back to WWE?

Almost assuredly not. He's all but signed with WWE but wanted to finish his obligations with NJPW and All In by the sounds of it.

Enbu is... Ryusuke Taguchi in a silly gimmick. Here's hoping for a slick WK video hint, Hiromu, and Shibata. I know the accusations against Honma were fucking dreadful but I'm glad he's back.

Why didn’t NJPW book him in a singles match then? They probably are paying him a big payday considering his high booking fee. Sticking him in meaningless tag matches seems to be waste of the investment. It’s already a one match show and since he’s leaving, it’s not like they have to protect his matches. There is nothing to lose. I think Rey vs. KUSHIDA would’ve been an awesome semi-main event.

Certainly would be, but I'm guessing he doesn't want to push it too hard and injure himself before signing a lucrative WWE contract. He'll likely milk his signature stuff and avoid bumping too much in the All In six man. Let Fenix and Bandido do the crazy stuff (and boy will they be up for that).

Show is setup to be very much all about the main event. I prefer New Japan's slow build show approach over the indie "let's all steal the show" mentality, but this is a bit much. Hopefully Ishii and Omega bring it in their tag but everybody is beat the fuck up, so I can see them going full house show mode.

Edit: The translated comments are up on World, but not YouTube yet. Kenny said he's happy that Ibushi won and didn't really want to win in a weird way. That's interesting. The way he said it didn't make it come off like a dick, even though that's how it translates. He continued by saying "I was looking for someone who can be stronger than me."

They also have a video up of the OGz getting escorted out of the building and into the transport van. Funny stuff.

the hell is this post-match stuff with Tanahashi? Are they stalling?

It's what he does.

That was thrilling and heartbreaking. Ibushi wins two seemingly career defining matches and then slips up in his coronation match. This feels wrong but Tana vs. Omega is intriguing if that's what we get.

Tournament was fantastic but still a level below last year's and that's okay. I feel it delivered four classic matches and a whole lot of greatness not far off that mark. The final, Okada/Tanahashi, Omega/Ishii and Ishii/Goto are all 5 imo and I may have the GL match there too on second viewing.
