MOVIE COMMENT CATCH-ALL THREAD

Craig didn't come across like that on before Casino Royale though, did he? Not that I'm endorsing Cumberbatch, Just I never saw Craig as a possible James Bond. I like it when actors surprise me.

Probably not to most, but I think it had more to do with Craig's height and hair color.

Cumberbatch is a good actor, so I don't doubt that he would do a good job.  But at the moment, he doesn't feel like Bond.

There was a pretty bad ass moment in a Scandal in Belgravia when two goons took Mrs. Hudson hostage and he went into Terminator mode in about 2 seconds flat and it was, like, shit's about to go down. So he is capable of emanating an aura of toughness.

Anyway, I'm not saying I would definitely cast him as Bond if it were up to me. But if Craig quit tomorrow, and I was one of the producers, Cumberbatch would absolutely be on the list of potential replacements because he's a great actor and ticks many of the right boxes.

A recently released chemical analysis reveals that Brittany Murphy, star of Clueless, Sin City, and 8 Mile, may have been murdered by intentional poisoning.

Murphy died on December 20, 2009 at the age of 32. She was discovered unconscious in her shower by her mother, Sharon Murphy. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office found that Murphy died of natural causes relating to acute pneumonia and anemia. Mere months later, Murphy’s husband, writer/director Simon Monjack, died from the very same natural causes. Monjack’s body was discovered in the same house by the same person, Sharon Murphy. The final report on Monjack’s death included some bizarre details, like how Sharon Murphy slept in her son-in-law’s bed after her daughter’s death and kept bottles of medications in the house prescribed under the name Sharon Monjack.

Now, nearly four years later, Brittany Murphy’s father, Angelo Bertolotti, has come forward with a shocking lab report. Bertolotti has long suspected that his daughter and her husband did not die accidentally. After suing to gain access to his daughter’s hair samples, Bertolotti commissioned the report by a private lab called the Carlson Company. The report finds that Murphy may have died from exposure to toxic heavy metals, stating, “If we were to eliminate the possibility of a simultaneous accidental heavy metals exposure to the sample donor then the only logical explanation would be an exposure to these metals (toxins) administered by a third party perpetrator with likely criminal intent.”

The L.A. County Coroner’s office had no comment, saying only “our report stands as of now.”

I thought it was great. You make me sad. I thought it was complex in its treatment of female characters and what it means to be "empowered". Some times they looked in control, like the gun BJ scene with Franco.

I don't want to say you're seeing things in it that aren't there, because it's just as likely that I'm NOT seeing things that are supposed to be in there, but...I'm not sure that what you took away from the scene (which is interesting) is something that was intentionally in the scene (For instance, IMDB trivia suggests that this scene was completely improvised, which leads me to feel like Harmony Korine thought it was cool and not fitting any general criticism/discussion of female empowerment).

Even if the scene was improvised it's still acting with in the parameters of these characters and their search for empowerment in a realm in which they're meant to be exploited. Even in improvising, especially in film, the characters have to want something - there has to be an end goal or desire. Because of the characters they were playing, those actresses had to go into that scene knowing they weren't going to let James Franco fuck them yet, and that they would turn the tables and take advantage of him. He's got to earn it. Whether they knew how they were going to do that in advance doesn't really matter because the female power structure was created as soon as the girls hit the screen. It's totally possible that Korine didn't intend to do that. This also doesn't really matter to me. I think we'd all like to believe the artists who create work that we appreciate was a super-genius and intended everything just for us(See: Room 237), but this is how I read the work. It's out of his hands, and it just so happened that his work made me think about certain topics. I feel that the way I read those topics are supported by what's in the movie, regardless of how they got there.

As for the race thing, object isn't the right word, but the scene in which they're in the bar, Korine films them like they're being enclosed by black dudes, who are all looking at them like they're down to fuck. It's one of the first time any of them get really uncomfortable with the way men are looking at them-  with the exception of, I think, Hope, who instantly didn't like James Franco.

Hey, this is fun, we should do this more often.

FWIW I thought Spring Breakers was about how absurd it is to try to create something really meaningful out of youth culture.  (Maybe I'm just getting old.)  And I thought James Franco single-handedly carried the movie to something approaching greatness.

As far as that goes, Spring Breakers is the tragedy of popular youth culture. They want to party forever and sexuality doesn't have consequences and they'll always be young forever and ever. It shows and revels in the positives, because Spring Break can be fun, but then after you've overstayed your welcome the lights get a little dimmer, and now it's just plain sad. James Franco is the lost boy who didn't leave NeverLand, but popular culture has show him the way to maintaining the boys dream of cars, money, sexy ladies.

I think it reveres and indicts at the same time. Who wouldn't want to live in Spring Break forever and ever? But while you may be truly happy, it's a pretty short life and doesn't have a pleasant end. If you can accept that, go for it.

I thought the movie kept getting in it's own way. The 'artistic' slow motion montages of kids partying on the beach underscored by the same ADR of Franco chanting 'sprang braaaaake' just murdered the pacing.

1. Damon Lindelof is awful.

2. I think on Her Majesty's Secret Service works as it is, not sure Connery could have pulled off the scene at the end . Lazenby's not great, but I don't think he's nearly as bad as has been made out.

Gone Baby Gone. Holy shit how have I never seen this, much less had any friend even mention it to me. I only know it from snatches of conversation on here. Michelle Monaghan was a bit of a cipher of a character (if I was her I would have split LOOOOOOONG before) but otherwise this was a tour-de-force of acting and dialogue. "Get those sausages off my lawn"!

Glad you got round to seeing it. Great film, great debut for Ben Affleck as a director.

Watched my first Rainer Werner Fassbinder movie Gods of the Plague and wrote a little essay about it and Germany in the 1960's and 70's. You can check it out here, if you want: http://jaekrenfrow.blogspot.com/2013/11/thoughts-on-gods-of-plague-fassbinder.html

Anyone here using letterboxd.com? I can't decide if I like it or not.

Also, Magic Magic, the movie with Michael Cera acting creepy(creepier than usual) and Juno Temple, is really good and not exactly what you expect from the trailer. Maybe it was my day, but I really connected to it when I watched it.

Thought this said 'Magic Mike' and was trying to picture Michael Cera doing a striptease.  Hello, new screenplay idea!

Yep, terrific movie.  Affleck has directed 3 full-length movies and I've loved 'em all.
