MOVIE COMMENT CATCH-ALL THREAD

The thing about 50 SHADES is that it was an e-book sensation. Most people didn't actually rush anywhere and buy it. In the case of most readers, you wouldn't even know they were reading it, because there was no actual book. There was an anonymity to it that no doubt emboldened many who might not otherwise have read it. That will be lost with the film version, where you'll have to show your face to other human beings at the theater.

I expect it to bomb at the cinema, but then do gangbusters when it returns to the anonymous realm of OnDemand, Redbox, Netflix, etc.

I think it's too early to tell, but it is coming out at the perfect time. I expect there to be a big budget, action movie hangover in August. Plus, there is no guarantee that people will go see that Hercules film, Jupiter Ascending, or the head-to-head competition GotG. All four films have an equal chance of bombing as of right now. The only known factors are Marvel's film success, Ratner's poor track record recently, and the following the book has. However, one of those films is guaranteed to be the R.I.P.D. of 2014.

Rock has really only been massively successful in established franchises (he seems to enhance them) but he hasn't had a real big hit launched on his back in forever.

I have not read 50 Shades, nor do I intend to, but if what I've heard about it is at all true, I'm struggling to see how they can possibly get an even slightly faithful adaptation in under NC-17.

I mean, they sued the porn parody producers for it being too close to the source material, and not enough of a parody.

Re: 50 SHADES. For a while I didn't know anyone who was reading it... but slowly on my social networking news feeds it started to pick up steam. It seemed like once one friend was open about reading it, others followed. Demographic : 22-35-year old females.

That's all I can contribute at this time. I have not dated anyone who has read it (I don't think).

I imagine for this film they'll have the actors simulate a lot of it, then get in actual porn actors for the more graphic stuff. Anti-Christ did something similar. So, yeah, it's going to have to be NC17.

I was pretty young when it was in theaters but I remember Showgirls having some hype behind it and being NC-17 so I see that it made $35M at the box office which seemed good until I saw the budget was $45M. Still, I assume it had to do well in retail? I don't know. I think you can get away with NC-17 but it takes balls to try it.

If the 50 Shades people really are paying the actors peanuts, that suggests they're pretty eager to keep costs low. I figure you spend $10 to $15 million at the most, and there's no reason you can't make that back...at least.

When all was said and done, I believe Showgirls made a decent profit too.

According to Box Office Mojo, Showgirls made a bit over 20 million domestic, and is by far the highest grossing NC-17 film ever.  Most theaters won't book NC-17 movies under any circumstances.

Some film called Henry & June is the only other NC-17 to ever cross the 10 million threshold.

I suspect your friends were reading it out of curiousity. 50 Shades isn't called mommy porn for nothing.  Many of its followers are in their 40s, married for quite some time, with children and jobs, who want to live on the edge without actually going toward that actual edge.  It's BDSM lite mingled with some degree of romance, based on what I've heard.  If it's too raunchy, many from that group won't go to the theaters. Some will as a girls night out or a way to entice their partners, but many won't.  As EVA mentioned, they'll wait until they can buy/rent it discreetly to catch the movie.

Henry & June is about Henry Miller and his wife both having affairs with Anais Nin.  It's a decent film, very arthouse-y.

Anyone catch Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight on HBO? I know we were talking about it on the old board, or maybe this one. Pretty good for an HBO film, not up there with You Don't Know Jack or Beyond the Candelabra but solid. The cast of course is spot-on (cool seeing Judge Faylen from The Wire playing another judge haha) with a bravura performance from Frank Langella especially. It will piss you off, but sometimes that is necessary.

Another from the Netflix queue:

Up For Grabs - Documentary on the Barry Bonds' 73rd home run ball and the legal fight that ensued regarding possession of the ball between two guys.  Pretty good documentary complete with a host of pretty unlikeable people.  Neither guy claiming the ball ends up being very sympathetic.  On the one hand you've got a guy who caught the ball but may have lied about being beaten up and certainly exaggerated himself and the story.  Then you've got the guy who ended up with the ball but may have stolen it to do so but definitely BIT A KID in the process.  Lots of good footage and interviews.  Not sure I agree with the decision in their lawsuit but it's a fun ride getting there.  7/10.

So, Tim Brayton (who I believe has at least a couple of other fans here) is planning to basically review all of the Toho Kaiju films starting tomorrow and going up to the release of Godzilla next May, with the Godzilla films being done once a week on Saturday, and the various others being filled in chronologically during the weeks.

So, yeah, this might be the best blog event ever.

Watched two movies last night at the theatre.

In Cheap Thrills, a guy with a wife and kid, who's having trouble paying his rent, loses his job.  He goes to a bar to drown his sorrows, and runs into an old friend that he hasn't seen in five years.  Then the two of them run into a rich couple, a guy with a young trophy wife, and they're celebrating her birthday by finding people and offering them cash to do ridiculous degrading things.  The group goes back to the couple's place, money is thrown around, and things get crazy.  I guess the subtext here is that the two guys are competing for money and get mad at each other, when they should be getting mad at the rich guy for making them do all this awful stuff.  Feels like I'm over this kind of movie.  There was a completely unexpected jump scare that nearly made my heart burst out of my chest, though.  Also they managed to find a dubstep song with a drop that goes on for like ten minutes.

Big Bad Wolves is the Israeli thriller that Tarantino called his favorite of 2013.  Little girls are being abducted and killed, and an anonymous tip leads a group of policemen to pick up a suspect and forcibly interrogate him.  Word gets around that this happened, one cop gets fired because of it, and he and the father of one of the dead girls pick up the same guy and continue the torture/interrogation.  Considering that the majority of it is a guy strapped to a chair denying that he knows anything, it's pretty good.  I can see why Tarantino liked it, because he was a huge influence.  It's got the violence and the Tarantino-y dialogue and a good bit of humor.  Also a big-time orchestral score.  Looks like they're releasing it in January, probably just a limited release, but everyone is gonna get a chance to see it if they want.

Machete was just as gloriously stupid and over the top as I hade hoped and Mel Gibson was great as the Star Wars loving weapons dealer Vos. I love that this sort of movie can make money these days. Can't wait for number 3.

Man, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Machete Kills absolutely bombed, and I kinda doubt 3 gets made.

Do not let the numerous titties fool you, #1 Cheerleader Camp is awful beyond description. I hate my uncanny ability to find movies made by The Asylum. They have a record fantastic box art to shitty film ratio of any film studio.

In better news ...At First Sight was a better than expected bromance movie. It is much more about the relationship between two friends than relationships with ladies. This is worth your time.
