MOVIE COMMENT CATCH-ALL THREAD

I think my expectations were just too high/different for The Iceman. Don't get me wrong, it's a good film. It's just not what I think it should have been, which is: really really fucked up.

I could have told you from the beginning that it wasn't going to be that type of movie. However, I can't imagine the film they were trying to do with Mickey Rourke (and Channing Tatum before him) being better than this.

Aside from the script, what pissed me off was that there was little of Kuklinski's arrogance and the poisonous charisma that comes through in his interviews. They should have at least tried to make some scenes showing that instead of just going for him feeling remorse during the open/close parts. I hate to say it, especially considering how much I love Michael Shannon, but he just didn't seem dangerous enough.

Maybe Michael Rooker would have been a more realistic Kuklinski. I got the feeling they wanted to make him cold and callous (which Shannon is pretty damn capable of playing), but not as cold and callous as he comes off in the interviews. Michael Shannon gave us the sensationalized and sellable Richard Kuklinski, which is what matters to the people doing the distribution. And that's why I am scared about the Foxcatcher movie. Knowing how crazy John du Pont was and how inaccurate Moneyball was, do we get a movie that's true to what actually happened or do we get Schultz/du Pont stories that Bennett Miller and Sony want us to see? When people get written out of history, you can pretty much write and characterize them how you want.

Are there any silent movie you'd like to see remade?

I've got three -

1. Metropolis - never happen, too anti-capitalism/pro-workers' rights

2. The Golem - This is a personal favorite, there need to be more golem movies in general

3. The Man Who Laughs - THIS is just ripe for a Twilight-esque remake. Tortured soul, easily hidden deformity, teen girl pining for a "monster," Victor Hugo is big now with Les Mis, it's like printing gold!

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari could be redone pretty easily.  Make the somnambulist a misguided college guy tricked into committing crimes by a professor/former felon.  In the process, both men fall for the same girl and the mastermind makes plans to kill his accomplice and live happily ever after with the girl and his ill-gotten riches.

Watched a few flicks this weekend.

Cabin in the Woods (2012) Heard lots of good about this movie. Kept waiting for it to hook me, but it never did. Sci-Fi movie wearing a horror disguise. Read some interviews with Goddard and Whedon where they talked about wanting to get away from the "torture porn" trend in current horror. I hate the term and the people that use the term, "torture porn". I did like the film, but a horror movie it was not. 6/10

The Innkeepers (2011) After Cabin in the Woods I was ready for something more traditional or substantial. What I got was a moderately paced ghost story. I liked the performances all around. The story and effects were fine. Liked this one more than Cabin, but only just. 7/10

Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010) Enjoyable popcorn muncher. The horror/comedy genre is very hard to hit on, but they gave it a good shot. 6/10

The only part I was a bit let down by with CABIN IN THE WOODS was the part that was supposed to be like a straight-up slasher before things started getting weird.  The initial Buckner Family stuff was a little plodding and not very tense...I was looking forward to how well they would do with the "slasher" within the overall story and that was the dullest part.

As long as you hate the people that finance, make, and view torture porn 1000 times more we're still cool. Otherwise you have weird priorities.

I thougt Cabin in the Woods had some funny moments, but a lot of the time it just felt like they were lecturing the audience.

We don't need to be told "Torture Porn is terrible and sexist." We already know. Judging by box office numbers, it's appeal seems to be on the wane anyway. So it's not like it's an urgent message you have to get out there.

And, wait, characters in slasher flicks are one dimensional? Man, Joss. You keep dropping the pipebombs!

See, also: Funny Games.

Well, the movie sat on the shelf for two years because of MGM going bankrupt, so the torture porn message was more relevant when it was written and filmed.

It was also fucking great and you are all fucking wrong.
