2018 Summer Blockbuster Movie Pool

I have some catching up to do with this thread.

Reminder to everyone that this is the last day to include Avengers: Infinity War on your lists.  I'm planning to submit my own entry sometime today as well.

Well, I have to say that a fucking mega-blockbuster scheduled so early in the season certainly has improved participation and there has been a reduction In the usual schlepping around you usually see when the pool is first announced.

Guilty As Charged..

Hey @S.K.o.S. - clean out your mailbox

I tried to send you my list of prizes for this year but it says you can't get PMs

Hopefully folks will like my picks this year (I mean there is no Train to Busan...)

The wound caused by having to buy Train To Busan on Amazon because I totally fell out of prize contention in the last two weeks of last year's pool is still there and it still stings.

I'm so confident in my lists that I'd just assumed that most of the posts after mine would be people laughing at them.

Next time, I'm going to follow a new plan: drop the five that seem easiest to place off of the lists instead of the other way around.

I WAS SO CLOSE~!

I still haven't opened Train to Busan yet because (1) I saw it months before last year's competition and (2) I'm so behind on what I was planning to watch that I've unconsciously put it off a bunch.

Yes, you're allowed to edit.  The second tiebreaker is time of entry, and editing bumps you down in that respect, but that likely won't matter in the end.

Ok, here are the rest of the prizes, from Rippa and I. Spoilered for length.

Rippa is contributing a Criterion dvd of THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC

4154H8KT15L._SY445_.jpg

In 1431, Jeanne d'Arc is placed on trial on charges of heresy. The ecclesiastical jurists attempt to force Jeanne to recant her claims of holy visions.
"Never again would silent film director Dreyers' vision be so humblingly powerful or so purely cinematic. One of the most inspired and inspiring films ever made." - David Parkinson, Empire Magazine

Rippa also gives to you a dvd of SEOUL STATION

81QgxBwth1L._SY445_.jpg

Several groups of people try to survive a zombie pandemic that unleashes itself in downtown Seoul.
"Seoul Station is first and foremost an animated zombie movie – and a pretty damn good one at that – but its seething contempt at the way the underclass of Korean society is treated (which could also be applied to any country in the world) elevates it even higher." - Andrew Marshall, Starburst

And lastly from Rippa, the booby prize that will go to the last place finisher.  It's THE ROOM.

wsi-imageoptim-TheRoomDVDByTommyWiseau.j

Johnny is a successful banker who lives happily in a San Francisco townhouse with his fiancée, Lisa. One day, inexplicably, she gets bored with him and decides to seduce his best friend, Mark. From there, nothing will be the same again.
"From Johnny’s famous cry, “You’re tearing me apart, Lisa!” (modeled after James Dean’s wail in Rebel Without a Cause), to his recurring, incorrect impersonation of a chicken (“Cheep cheep cheep!”, which is not the sound a chicken makes), Wiseau’s film is incompetent and idiotic, narcissistic and nasty, tedious and mesmerizing. And in its commitment to its own dramatic ludicrousness, as well as to the misguided Hollywood ambitions of its maker, it’s also more than a bit magical." - Nick Schager, The Daily Beast

Then there's 2 more from me. First, a dvd of SWEET VIRGINIA

6000198031799.jpg

A mysterious stranger sends shockwaves through a close-knit community in this nerve-jangling slice of raw suspense.
"A languorously slow film that drips like the golden honey in the Stones song, Sweet Virginia is a simple story told very, very well. To say that it recalls the early work of the Coen brothers or the more lyrical films of David Lynch is not to praise it too highly." - Jennie Kermode, Eye For Film

Second from me is a dvd of 68 KILL.

817TK6uwA0L._SY445_.jpg

A punk-rock after hours about femininity, masculinity and the theft of $68,000.
"This movie is determined not to take itself seriously, and that makes it easy for you to do the same and cackle, even as the bloodshed turns ridiculously foul and cheesiness is played as a virtue." - Ken Jaworowski, New York Times
