Canucks public address announcer, John Ashbridge, died yesterday at the age of 71. He'd been with the team since '87 and was a huge part of the identity in my mind because of his classic, unique voice as pro sports moved away from that style of announcer toward generic rock radio guys. So sad.

That totally sucks. He was probably my favorite PA announcer in the league with the possible exception of Lou Nolan in Philly, he had such a great voice. RIP.

If you're up for a new hockey read, I recommend checking out Keith Gave's "The Russian Five" (there's also a documentary by the same title that's just been released).  Gives the inside scoop on how the Red Wings acquired "The Russian Five" of Slava Fetisov, Igor Larionov, Sergei Fedorov, Slava Kozlov, and Vladimir Konstantinov.  Gave was (is?) the Red Wings beat writer for a newspaper in Detroit and is in a unique position to tell the story.  See, he was a spy for the NSA for several years, spying on Russia.  The Wings made use of his Russian language skills to help acquire the Five.  The book is a little fawning at times, and sometimes reads like a compilation of articles rather than a coherent whole, but is very good anyway.

Fun tidbit: After drafting Niklas Lidstrom and Sergei Fedorov in consecutive rounds (gee, not a bad draft, eh?), the Wings were set to draft Pavel Bure (!) before being told he was not eligible.  Half of their people said he either was, or could be made so, the other half said to side with the official league word (ineligible).  So they passed on him.  Vancouver then drafted him, went to court in Detroit, and got him declared eligible.  How would that have been for a draft?  Good grief.

Of all the ridiculous things fans say the idea that repeated blows to the head can't be taken out of the game is the most ridiculous. Some pile of dogshit who gained sentience elsewhere even said all these players with brain damage deserve it, and you've got other morons using "they are like people who decided to smoke" argument. There should be a mandatory IQ test for people posting online. Just wanted to vent here because it just left me so disgusted and the other place would bin me for flaming.

Eh, it's more like Ted being cheap again.  It's the same thing that's happened with the Wizards; (over)pay the players, while skimp on management and the front office.  And considering some of the things that have happened with the Wiz, it does seem like some of the time Ted cares a lot more about the bottom line.

From listening to "insiders," this was in the cards , prob ever since they brought in a guy to be the heir apparent and made him an assistant. It sounds like he was almost fired at least twice this season. And wasn't coming back, win or lose.

He could have stayed and got a $300K raise because of a Stanley Cup Bonus Clause but he will probably have no trouble doubling his salary on the open market with how the bar has moved for coaches.

Plus Trotz gets to dodge that inevitable "why are the defending champs underperforming and is the coach to blame" phase, so frankly Barry Trotz is smarter than the rest of us.

Oh yeah - the talk way earlier in the season locally was that Trotz was going to have to win the Stanley Cup to stay.

Then he didn't stay anyway.

Apparently he and the GM don't get along at all.

Friedman was on 590 discussing the secretive world of coaching salaries earlier, including saying some folks have clauses in their contract about punishment for public disclosure of their deals.

He also said some coaches have bonus acceleration in their deals based on playoff success. A bonus earned this year then becomes part of the base salary next year and such.

Maybe the Red Wings can throw some money at him and have a real coach.

Trotz spotted at Newark Airport, which is a United hub for the Metro area. Lou lives in NJ. Needless to say people online are connecting dots.

The people in Guatemala who had their homes destroyed by that volcano have banded together to gather aid and supplies to send to the suffering hockey fans of Ottawa.
