MLB 2013: July

It's always seemed absurd to me that closers are the guys who develop the flashiest characters and little catch phrases and trademark looks and cutesy sideburns, since those things become so embarrassing when they flame out the next year.

They fall apart so fast and are so hapless when they do, standing there watching the ball and the game disappear over the fence night after night, you'd think they'd want as little extra attention as possible.

It makes Mariano look like that much more top ten all time people in baseball, forget just pitchers or relievers...but just top ten men to ever play the game.

Pap is one of the worst, especially with his latest crybaby bitchfest about the Phillies sucking. Someone in the Deadspin comments said it best that they wouldn't suck so much if he wasn't closing.

Yeah.  I'm definitely not a Yankees fan, but I don't know how anyone who likes baseball can't be at least a little bit in awe of Rivera.

He's one of those guys I wish I was more like, not even in terms of supernatural-physical-ability-that-makes-you-rich, but just in terms of being so even-keel and emotionally in control at all times.

Guy has got perspective on things.

Baseball really needs to address the piss poor umpiring this winter. AJ Burnett strikes a guy out but the ball ricochets off the batter's foot which is somehow missed by the entire umpire crew and in the resulting confusion the batter ends up at 2nd on a bogus WP. The very next pitch is a close pitch called a ball and AJ throws up his hands leading to the UMP charging the mound in mouth frothing anger.

Thankfully, justice prevailed and AJ got out of it.

And it looks like Pittsburgh is going to sweep the doubleheader, which would put them 1.5 games ahead of St. Louis. When was the last time Pittsburgh was in first place on August 1? I can almost guarantee there was no Central Division when that last happened.

The graceless thugs clearly interfered.

Bud? Can the Integrity Clause be applied to a city?

Pittsburgh is clearly not ready to comport themselves in accordance with the tradition and honor of the noblest game.

I think it's time to end this unseemliness.

A certain subset of Red Sox fans losing their shit at trading Iglesias...man, that's funny. He has one extra base hit and two walks in 89 July PA. It's almost like he's not a good hitter and was being helped by a sky-high BABIP!

Ian Kennedy to San Diego for Joe Thatcher, a prospect, and a comp balance pick. Like it for both clubs...Kennedy had wore out his welcome in AZ, and getting out of that shithole park and into Petco could help him a ton. He's also from SoCal, so that's another potential benefit. As for the Diamondbacks, they have Cahill and McCarthy both ending rehab stints soon and have three other solid starters in the majors. Kennedy was the correct one to trade. They also only had one lefty in their bullpen (Tony Sipp), and he was getting beaten like a drum by left-handers. Makes sense for each team, and even if you don't think Kennedy will rebound, he's much better than the garbage other teams were getting for relievers.

From the LOLOLOL files, the Texas Rangers are in a panic and are listening to offers on any of their players as they search for help on offense. This includes Matt Garza.

Earlier, AZ tried to make a similar trade for Jeff Samardzija. Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer couldn't be reached for comment because they were dying from laughter.

Cruz is apparently going to get smacked down with 50 by the end of the week. It's why the Tigers jumped on Iglesias when they did. The issue with Texas isn't their team, it's the fact that the teams ahead of them (Tampa, Boston, Baltimore, Oakland, Detroit, Cleveland) aren't slowing down.

Astros trade Justin Maxwell to KC.

They gave up a guy named Kyle Smith, which has some Royals people really pissed off.

Norris to Baltimore for LJ Hoes, a comp balance pick, and possibly Josh Hader.

s/a trade deadline

Buster Olney randomly threw out a tweet that the Pirates and Marlins were close on a deal that involved Giancarlo Stanton.

And there hasn't been a peep since
