NJPW The New Beginning 2018

I love this. Cody, telling everyone what they want, promising them the world; because Kenny—even at his best—was always primarily self-interested. The BC was his platform and showcase; as his profile rose, you’d benefit too, but that was never really the point. But! Kenny is (was?) their friend regardless, and that has to count for something. (Right!?)

Before joining Chaos, he went all dollar store version of Hakushi with the all white (Shintoism) IIRC.

What was the match where he came out with that crap on and the crowd booed him mercilessly? They HATE HATE HATED him. It was on an AXS episode...

Also, Kenny as drunk Sharon Stone in Casino is hilarious

His title shot at Okada where Okada where Okada started trying to recruit him into CHAOS afterward because Goto lost his way.

If the story last year framed Okada as too weary from title defenses to really key in on the G1 with the necessary focus, that should be even more true now.

Was it the actual story or was it something that fans built on their own? Guy went, if I'm not mistaken, 7-0 before Evil upset him mostly via countering his signature spots. It doesn't look to me that he was weary or lacked focus.

That’s a fair question. I totally project/extrapolate narrative from very little sometimes, and EVIL winning was a product of his finish countering the Rainmaker well and Okada sorta dancing his way out, since Kenny had just lost to Juice. I do remember reading a lot of translated material on the Lion Marks’ website where Okada would mention that he’d had a lot of hard matches already, and didn’t need to prove he was the best, since he was already champ. (To be fair, he still always insisted he’d win anyway.) The English commentary team definitely pushed the cumulative wear of his time on top, but I don’t think they get much direction. So, I might be overstating things to say it was THE story, but I think it was at least subtext.

I have a nearly identical blazer to Marty Scurll's. Same pattern, slightly different collar. I'm not sure how to feel about that.

Do you ever feel like causing a spot of bother? Any villainous tendencies?

On a related note, I kinda feel bad for the Lion Marks.  They had carved out this little cottage industry providing NJPW translations, only to have NJPW come along and one-up them with official subtitled Youtube videos.

Agreed. I think the main thing that hurt Okada in the EVIL match was complacency after the Omega/Juice result. As you said, he looked like he was having a laugh and ready to book his spot in the final. Such great, subtle character work from a guy that's slowly become one of the best at subtleties of character. I think the Suzuki draw is when fatigue and cumulative damage really started to get played up and then it came to a head in the Omega match. Really fantastic booking of a seemingly unstoppable champ while elevating EVIL and allowing the Omega story to play out in such a fascinating way.

Not only, he also had that funny spot where he threw chair at Okada when he tried to do crossbody (I think thats how it is called?) over the barricades and something else I think. This was played up further in their KoPW match where Okada countered his counters.

Also, Okada came to Suzuki match with tapped neck/back so I think idea was that Evil fucked him up, Suzuki tortured him further and he just couldn't hold it up against, relatively, healthy Omega. That spot with "doctors" checking on his neck during the match with Omega was I think them recognizing Evil and Suzuki matches.

From what I remember this whole theory about Okada getting tired started after Dominion and his other matches that he barely won before were used as additional "evidence" that his time is running out. But if we now look back to his title defences then most of them go down to the last minute reversal. So I'd argue that it is not him getting weary, but thats just "Okada title defence" match.

As for Okada not taking Evil seriously enough, well that was his entire G1 where he was in every promo saying that he is on another level and questioning why some wrestlers are even in G1 (Kojima).

Yeah, the chair counter to the over-the-guardrail crossbody was one of the best spots from the entire year. It was so good that I think WWE had Braun recreate it with an office chair from the announce table against Roman like a week later. The other big blow was EVIL forming a mound of chairs and hitting a brutal looking Darkness Falls onto them.

Does NJPW have a sponsorship deal going on with Coors?  I feel like they should since it's like the roster's beer of choice.  Not even drinking the Japanese brewed stuff.

They've had the Coors deal for a real long time. How else do you think they got Brock to come over?
