I think the Underworld movies are okay, but nothing really compels me to follow the story despite the reviews. I justify my reasons for sticking with RE for so long because of zombies and awesome gun porn, but the vampires, werewolves and awesome gun porn in Underworld should also scratch my itch, right? But it doesn't. I only followed Saw for as long as I did because I waited patiently for Hoffman to die horribly and was rewarded for my suffering. Michelle Rodriguez's "sneering IS acting", Sienna Guillory's decision that her character's only motivations are smoking and shooting, and Ali Larter's role as a clotheshanger are just hard for me to watch. But enduring the franchise was worth it to get Li Bingbing.
J.T.
As dumb as RE movies can be, they always manage to have one balls out over the top action scene that is fucking incredible. Few scenes in any movie ever made were as Mythbusters inspiring as the one in Resident Evil: Afterlife where Alice blows the heads off of several zombies zombies while armed with a pair of sawed off shotguns with shells loaded with quarters. Which everyone knows would never clear the bore of a 12 Gauge. Only pennies or dimes would fit the barrels and even so, the spread would wildly inaccurate. Y'see? That's the gun porn part. I also like how Umbrella gives zero fucks about wiping out every man, woman, and child on planet earth. The Red Queen even made clones of children to test the psychological effects of their bio-weapons on the clones standing in as parents when their fake clone kids were attacked..
Brian Fowler
The first two Final Destination movies are legitimately good. That was more than enough to get me to watch the other three. I both like and hate the Saw movies with almost equal measure. But I keep watching them. Christ they got plot nutty though.
Brian Fowler
Happy Death Day actually figures out how to lean into the weaknesses inherent in a PG-13 slasher in a way that kinda made them strengths. That's insanely impressive. Jessica Rothe was clearly way overqualified for this as well. Good flick.

Spoiler No matter how long she spent in the dorm room on each re-set, smirky dude that she encounters on exiting the building is always in the same spot, even as there are variations with everyone else. Its the little things that get under my skin.
GojiColin
So I finally got around to watching The Wailing last night; what a great if not deeply depressing film. There's one small thing I'm trying to figure out though: Spoiler So the Japanese man is possessed by the Tengu, but for part of the film is at least in partial control of his body right? In particular I'm thinking of the scene where Jong-Goo and the lynch mob chase the Japanese man to the cliff and the Japanese man is hiding and crying as Jong-Goo vents his frustration about his daughter being cursed. It felt to me like that was the human side of him coming to terms with why the villagers want him dead/what the Tengu has done; whereas after he's "killed" by the truck the Tengu just takes over him completely. Is that anyone else's take? That being said I think one of the best things about the film is how it keeps you off-balance with whom the real villain is.

I really have to get off of my ass and work on my new Pile of Shame which includes The Wailing, but fucking Rippa has be playing catch-up in Destiny 2 these days. J.T.
The School Nicholas Hope Megan Drury Directed by Storm Ashwood The trailer looks promising up until the point where you suddenly figure out that it has a plot almost identical to the first Silent Hill movie and that thing sucked. I still like the theory: Spoiler That it was about some kind of fungal disease and there was nothing supernatural going on. I'm not sure how well it holds up -- I'd have to watch it again (and I don't know that I want to do that to myself again), but at the end when the Japanese guy reveals he's the devil, he's revealing himself to the guy who was bit by the "zombie" guy. So we don't know if he's hallucinating or not. Japanese guy was affected by the guy in the truck, and so on. Really effective film in putting you in that despair / horror mood. GojiColin
I might watch it again this weekend and try to look at it from the perspective @Lawful Metal mentioned. I remember it being brought up by the Cops, but I had kind of forgotten about it myself. Well played Na Hong--Jin. Control
The Graham family starts to unravel following the death of their reclusive grandmother. Even after she's gone, the matriarch still casts a dark shadow over the family, especially her loner teenage granddaughter, Charlie, whom she always had an unusual fascination with. As an overwhelming terror takes over their household, their peaceful existence is ripped apart, forcing their mother to explore a darker realm in order to escape the unfortunate fate they've inherited.

nate
I want to discuss the best 28 Horror Films for Black History Month. I'm blaming Facebook for this, because TCM (I think) posted an article from the NYT on 28 Films, 28 Days for BHM. And I was keen to see what a horror list like this would look like. J.T.
My Black Horror History Month list would look like: Get Out! Night of the Living Dead Candyman The Omega Man (for the corageous casting of Lincoln Kilpatrick and Rosalind Cash) The People Under The Stairs (features a black kid as the protagonist which was / is unheard of) Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight (Jada Pinkett Smith was your final girl.) Blacula Ganja & Hess Scream, Blacula, Scream Def By Temptation JD's Revenge Tales From The Hood Land of the Dead. (The leader of the intelligent zombie army is a black dude) Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus aka Spike Lee's remake of Ganja & Hess Event Horizon (this is what happens when you let a black dude be the captain of a spaceship..) The Beast Must Die (WEREWOLF BREAK~!!!) Dead Heist Crazy As Hell Nailed Gothika Holla Snoop Dogg's Hood of Horror Bones Lord Shango (made in 1975 and may hard to find) The Inheritance Holla 2 (Yes, there was a sequel to Holla) Spawn (because Michael Jai White) The Crooked Man (because Michael Jai White) For Honorable Mention, I would include The Believers and The Serpent & The Rainbow because of the Afro-Caribbean supernatural plotlines, RUPAULS TRILOGY OF TERROR~! just because, and 1973's Scream Bloody Murder that is arguably the film where the "IF THERE IS A BLACK PERSON IN THE CAST, HE / SHE WILL DIE IN THE FIRST TEN MINUTES" horror movie trope came from.
