JAN/FEB 2018 MOVIE DISCUSSION

I haven't seen Killer Joe since it came out and it happened to be on Starz right now. Went and read the Ebert review of it right after the chicken leg scene and had no idea the tagline on the poster was (get this) "MURDER NEVER TASTED SO GOOD".

I don't know if I missed it but there was a particularly vile sample of McConaughey threatening someone on a recent Heavy Metal Kings album that was probably from this one... something about putting a mirror in front of someone and castrating them? Is that from Killer Joe or something else?

EDIT: Sweet, now Blacula is on followed by Scream Blacula Scream! Guess I got my pre-work shift covered

I saw it at a midnight showing back when it was new. I thought it was brilliant.

And I have never been motivated to watch it again. Makes me feel like I need a shower, I think.

Finally managed to make it to a Shape of Water screening. Holy shit, was that an excellent movie. I'm extremely disappointed they didn't get any nominations as an ensemble, as they really deserved it.

Saw The Shallows over the weekend. It's actually not bad for what it sets out to be. Your enjoyment, however, will boil down to: Do you think Blake Lively is hot? Do you wanna see her in a tiny bikini for 90 minutes? If your answer is yes, you'll enjoy the movie. Me? I think she's hot. I enjoyed the movie.

I'm more of a rap video vixen guy and I'm not exactly a fan of Jaume Collet-Serra films, but I enjoyed The Shallows for a 90 minute genre film. Movie blood doesn't usually get to me, but um, giant leg wound repair gets me. Oh boy. This is why I can't rewatch stuff like The Revenant.

My buddy Austin is usually a pretty soft touch when it comes to horror films but he HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATED The Shallows. He described it with this visceral rage that he usually reserves for cops and Nazis. All I could do is laugh.

When I mean soft touch, this guy will watch anything and usually like it. There's no way I'm touching that movie with a ten foot pole.

That's how we felt after we watched Bugs (same creator).

There's a zero percent chance I will ever watch Killer Joe.

I like how what preceded someone talking about a William Friedkin film was directors abusing actors and actors just accepting that. No hint of irony or connection made at all. Love that.

Look, I know Jade ruined David Caruso's film career, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it abuse.

Funny, blood and stuff like that doesn't get to me, but any sort of bodily repair makes me squirm in my seat. I'm talking about really graphic stuff like sewing up body parts or what have you.

That, and anything with eyeballs. I have goosebumps and feel sick just thinking about close ups of eyeballs about to get poked with a needle.

It's the only part about Cloverfield Paradox that got to me, when the Russian guy's eyeball starts going bonkers.

Oh man! Some kind soul uploaded all of Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter to youtube!

Its the best movie about Jesus teaming up with El Santo to fight Vampires in Toronto!

It's Ottawa, you heathen!  Did you even watch the movie?

:P

There are a number of clips on Youtube if you want to check it out before committing to the whole thing.  It's.... something else. There's a little bit of everything in the movie.  Bad kung fu, bad comedy, even worse acting, no production budget, musical numbers, vampires, lesbians, vampire lesbians, etc.  I wouldn't even know how to review it.  It's a mess as serious cinema, but it's so campy and ridiculous, it ends up being a lot of fun.  My entire review of the movie would probably be two sentences: "Jesus Christ kills vampires with drum sticks.  Wooden drum sticks, not turkey legs.  Roger Ebert, I'm not.

It's so over the top, it's hard to take seriously,  There are scenes that would be blasphemous or sleazy, but they plan out so ridiculous, you just sort of laugh it off.  Tone is closer to uh....Rocky and Bullwinkle than, say, From Dusk to Dawn.

Does it actually sound like a threat, or merely the description of a process? Because that sounds an awful lot like True Detective S1, ep 4.

Just saw The 15:17 to Paris and woof was it a dog. Having the guys play themselves was a fun idea in theory but they were pretty terrible at acting. Movie starts with a rant against ADD medication with the line "MY GOD IS BIGGER THAN YOUR STATISTICS" said in a serious manner. I used Moviepass and I still wanted my money back.

Clint's films are starting to reflect the level of thought and effort he's putting into them, and I'm saying that as someone who liked Jersey Boys and Sully. I like that he's trying to buck glitzy ensembles and films that take 3 or 4 years to be developed and released (hell, having real life heroes play themselves is cool if you take out the weird Frederick Zoller Nazi propaganda film vibe out), but I think the quality and cheap looking aesthetics of the film undermines the story itself. If you're making the film just for personal reasons, you might as well do a documentary whether's it's directing it yourself or finding someone half your age to do the directing and producing it. It would be way more effective in telling the story.

Clint needs to turn the clock back thirty years and get back to directing westerns. Pale Rider and Unforgiven are my shit.

As someone who's not super well-versed in the source material, I liked American Sniper and thought there was more depth of worldview than its harsher critics would allow. But knowing Clint's leanings and adding in the Inglorious Basterds of it all that Elsa alluded to, this one is a step too far into the "America Porn" genre. I generally like Clint's work though. I avoided Sully for ages because I didn't think there was much of movie there, but he proved me wrong and made something decent of it.

I haven't cared for anything he's made since Million Dollar Baby. There's something very stilted and artificial about his recent work. There's a weird quality to them that I can best describe as I'm never more aware I'm watching a movie than when I'm watching a later Clint movie.

It's probably from that. He threatens to cut somebody's face off then their dick and balls in front of a mirror (woof!).
