That was a lot of words that boil down to "well, that's, just, like, your opinion man" and I'm gonna let most of it slide except for my favourite of myths.

RE: "Old games don't need patching and were bug free"

(To be clear I think this is one of the greatest games from one of the greatest eras, but man.)

I don't know why, when I bought my Xbone, I decided to get the NBA 2K19 bundle instead of the Fallout 76 bundle.  Ostensibly it's because FO76 is multiplayer and required Xbox Live, and therefore I would never play it, but I don't know why it didn't occur to me that I could have just sold the digital code and made back 30 or 40 bucks of what I'd spent.

But, I have NBA instead, and, I don't know, it's not awful.  I just set it on easy mode and let the Celtics bomb the league back into the 40s.  There's something kind of soothing about that.  But, it reminds me that I miss the days when there weren't just the one game for every sport, when you had World Series Baseball on Sega and hockey games that weren't fucking terrible and it wasn't Madden this, Madden that.  I guess the tl;dr version of this is, "Fuck Electronic Arts" but you could really just post that into a sig for everything I write in this part of the board.  Mostly, fuck the leagues for not looking for other developers, but, I guess, fuck all those fans, too, who just look for the New Year's version of the microwaved vomit that passes for a sports game these days, because shitty companies keep making them and people fine with mediocrity keep justifying that decision.  Bleh.

I think I'm gonna go hang about 200 points on Golden State once I make it that far in the season, just because.  Bleh.

I don't understand why people put up with Street Fighter's shit beyond the nostalgia value when some other actually still good fighting games are getting made.

you know it's funny you mention this. From EventHubs: Another Dragon Ball FighterZ tournament shut down, many in the community are blaming Toei

Quote

Earlier today, it was announced by

AkSys Games that "due to unforeseen circumstances, Dragon Ball FighterZ will no longer be run at Anime Ascension." No details were given as to why Dragon Ball FighterZ had to be dropped from the event.

Notably, Dragon Ball FighterZ also had to be cancelled at DreamHack Atlanta for undisclosed reasons. According to Alex Jebailey, the fighting game director for the event, the cancellation was not as a result of the entry numbers — which were cited to be less than 40 at the time — but he was unable to publicly speak on the matter.

And this tweet from Joey Cuellar, who runs Evo.

Which makes more sense to interpret as "there's no way to pay the licensing fees they want and still turn a profit."

Based on things I've heard (how wonderfully cryptic), I wouldn't be surprised to see them crack down on streams soon too. Toei once sent a cease and desist to an embassy, so what's a fight night in comparison?

Yeah, I was in a bit of a mood this morning.  Work-related.  Sorry.  I probably should have just said I thought there were a lot of good newer games, but I still preferred old and left it at that.

And, yeah, old games are definitely buggy.  For some reason, that annoys me less than it does with newer games.

In other news, the mailman brought me a Japanese PSone - boxed with original manual and inserts - and a white Japanese  Sega Saturn - also boxed and with original manual and inserts.  The white Japanese (it's really a very light gray/tan, I think) is one of the Christmas models they released with NiGHTS Into Dreams.

I already own Japanese PS1's and Saturn's (though not these exact models), but having them boxed makes me kinda happy.

I'd say it's cool.  I constantly find myself on the side of "Older games were more complete", then I eventually realize that one of my favorite games is Xenogears and I just eventually slink away.

I don't know for sure if this'll be my last set of ratings for 2018, but let's address something real quick. This year, I have to acknowledge that I think GOTY is two seperate games- there's The Best Game of 2018, which is Celeste, and then there's my favorite game of 2018. I'm going to talk about my favorite game of 2018 now.

Also, that score is going to be a 4.5. DO NOT interpret this as some Meltzerian Scale Destruction. I have an account on Glitchwave, which is basically Rate Your Music for games (I strongly recommend it!). Their scoring system goes from 0.5 to 5, with half points in between. So, I use the ratings on there in place of my current ratings (1 = I hate it, 2 = I regret playing it, 3 = I don't regret playing it, 4=I love it). But, with a 4.5 and 5 available, I decided to make use of those. So, 4.5 represents the Game of the Year to me, and all of the games I have set at 4.5 are the best games I've played from every year I've been alive, based on their international release date. (so, 1988 is Super Mario Bros 3, 1998 is Soulcalibur, 2008 is Burnout Paradise, etc). I also decided to use 5 to represent "A Dream Come True," or in other words, some kind of longshot franchise resurrection that would be impossible to be impartial about if it ended up being any good. The only game there is Fire Pro Wrestling World. The only other game I can think of that might someday qualify is Virtua Fighter 6.

Now.

DUSK [4.5]
In a year where
-the first game I completed was Celeste, and I vividly remember thinking "oh man if I just played the game of the year in January this is gonna be a really hard year"
-story games have completely broken my fucking brain after I played God of War and got infuriated with the critical reception of a game that is not the game people are saying it is
-I spent the rest of the night after beating Destiny 2: Warmind laying on the floor, muttering "I can't believe it's worse (than Curse of Osiris)" and watching my guild break apart over it
-every AAA studio is almost completely incapable of tricking me anymore (I'm not saying I'm invincible, but I am saying that Hitman 2 has been out for two months and everyone that loved the last Hitman says "go get this it's amazing" and I STILL don't trust it)
-My playstation's disk drive thought it would be fun to start breaking and randomly spitting disks out constantly around the time I got Dragon Quest XI, preventing me from being able to make progress in it because when they designed the save system they didn't take into account "A Malevolent Spirit can invade the eject button and make the PS4 eject for forty minutes straight no matter what you do to it"

...Dusk comes out and says "KILL THE INTRUDER" and drops me in a basement with two sickles and three chainsaw wielding freaks and that's all the set up start playing go go go. It's easy to claim that it's a Quake knockoff, but within the thing they have built so carefully, it ends up being more. Strafe is a Quake knockoff. Dusk is the real fucking deal. It alternates between campy and genuinely unsettling. It's linear, but densely packed with secrets. If you, like me, get overwhelmed with atmosphere easily, you can take a break and load up the multiplayer and it is EXACTLY PERFECT in it's unending arena chaos. There's also an Endless Mode if you want to just kill monsters and listen to podcasts. It is a first person shooter that can, and happily does, meet you wherever you are and shows you something cool.

It's also coming out on Switch next year which seems like a cruel joke, but Quake got a saturn port so it's at least in character.

KILLER7'S UNCEREMONIOUS PC REMAKE [4]
So again on the topic of my Game of the Year thing: Killer7 is 2005's game of the year in a universe where Fire Pro Returns didn't come out. Killer7 is straight up one of my favorite narrative games ever made. It's a game entirely out of people making Choices. It is the reason that everyone that talks about Suda51 as some visionary makes me sad, because the odds are that they're talking about No More Heroes more than Killer7, and Killer7 is a game that's About Something. It's About Something bigger than interpersonal drama. It's about the division of East and West, and it's many fluid points. It's so About Something that even the control mechanics are about the message that it's trying to impart. Yes the controls are awkward. Why are the controls awkward. Because it's straddling the line between Western marketability (First person) and Eastern design independence. Everything it does is in service to the message. It is my Platonic Ideal Story Game.

the PC rerelease adds exactly one thing: A similarly mechanics-only joke about how little Capcom did to bring it into the modern age. It sorts saves by Slot (as in memory card slot). It used to play a cartoon while the game was saving. It still tries to, but because of modern hard drives, you see it for a millisecond. They remapped the controls in the tutorial to an x-box 360 controller. They offer no insight as to how you would control this game on a keyboard if you wished to control it on a keyboard. They did not expect you to have access to a mouse, so in return the aiming moves so sluggishly that if you want any chance of hitting anything, you have to manually adjust your mouse's DPI to the maximum. It would be understandable to get mad at a remake of a game controlling poorly. But if the original game controlled awkwardly with deliberate, fascinating purpose, the idea that it somehow controls worse on PC- the only system this remaster has been announced as coming to!- is objectively funny, and a joke at the expense of Capcom, the company that currently can only do one thing right.

also when you play it it's still killer7 so that's awesome

Has anyone here played either Ni No Kuni 2 and/or Dragon Quest 11? I am thinking of picking up one of the games for holiday playing and I am not sure which one to choose.

I have both sitting pretty on my shelf, does that count?

From those that I know that have played it more than I, Ni No Kuni II is a disappointment if you are expecting something like NNK. But DQ XI is a lengthy yet fun RPG.

Anyone have any idea what game Steve is playing on Sega Genesis in episode 8 of The Haunting of Hill House ? Looks a Hell of a lot like a Star Fox wannabe kind of game, 3D graphics, first person view, ship interior console, etc.

Got a link?

Dragon Quest 11 is fun as hell. I bought it the other day and haven't put it down yet.

Just got my 129th Platinum this morning with PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale for PlayStation Vita. Got to be a slog after doing this for PS3 years ago. As a reminder, Sony is shutting down the servers for PS All Stars on January 29, 2019.

EDIT: An hour after I posted this, I got my 130th Platinum with 36 Fragments of Midnight for PlayStation Vita.

SMASH UPDATE:

It took me 2.5 weeks but I finally have everyone unlocked.  Working more on Spirit Adventure now.

YAKUZA 0 UPDATE:
Haven't had a lot of time to devote to the game (most of my Smash time has been on transit or on lunch at work), still grinding money at Club Sunshine.

OTHER SHIT:

Got Donkey Kong Jr for Switch. It's still a fun game but I'm not convinced it was a fair use of $8 in the way I was for DK Sr.  Finally diving into the post-launch stories of Spider-Man, hating Screwball's EMP challenges.  I keep almost downoading DCUO or SWTOR because cold weather always makes me miss MMOs, then realizing how fucking angry both of those games used to make me when I played them more regularly and not doing it.  Federal furlough means I will probably be streaming some fighting game or another later today. Previously this would've been SF5, but they nuked all the goodwill Arcade Edition bought them so probably IJ2 or SoCal6.

My wife and I are trying to see who can unlock everybody in Smash first.  I was at first way in the lead until she caught up something fierce.  Then it turned into me having to catch up and we're both at the same amount of unlocked characters.  It's mainly just for giggles but it sure keeps me playing and trying to get good at some of the characters I normally wouldn't play as.  Spirit Adventure is still fun to go through.

And last Monday at my mom's I found a bag that had a ton of N64, Dreamcast and PS1 games which I thought I lost somehow (thought my parents sold them)  So we're incredibly excited to dust them off and play these again.  Just wish I saw it before re-buying a few of them but at least it didn't set me back too much.

EDIT:  Forgot to mention we also found an NES with the cables and games.  So while we use NES online on the Switch we're more looking forward to hooking that up and playing the games we both still have.

So is anyone else here really into console porn?

Er.... i mean..... retro hardware.  Yeah, that's what I meant.

I'm increasingly more interested in collecting hardware.  Truthfully, I'll never be hooked on playing video games.  i play some, but I get more enjoyment out of collecting retro games than I do playing them.  Playing is the least interesting side of the hobby for me.  I'm fascinated by the process of game design and I enjoy researching and obscure and little-known games.  And it turns out I'm really into the hardware.

At the moment, I'm more willing to spend a lot on hardware - particularly if it's boxed with the original manual and inserts.  I own about 30 retro consoles (10 different systems ranging from NES to original Xbox).  For most of the systems, I own both a US and a Japanese (J-NTSC) console.  And I'm starting to pick up rare variants.  I own a couple of the limited edition metallic PS2's released in Japan, the limited edition of the white Saturn console that was only available in Japan at Christmas (in original box and packaging), the really rare Saturn with the Sonic insignia on it (a Toys R US special in Japan), a PS1 Net Yaroze development console, etc.

Buying peripherals - light guns, PS 1 mouse, fighting sticks, the 3D Saturn controller - has become a higher priority for me that actually playing games - especially if I can find said accessory in the original box.  I have a couple of the Saturn 3D controllers around, but I bought another one this morning because it was the Japanese Nights into Dreams bundle with the original box and packaging.

At the moment, my main priority isn't to buy games.  It's buying a working CRT TV (or, more likely, a couple) and figuring out what I need to do to optimize the signal on the retro setup.

I'm kinda glad my gaming interest ends with the PS2/Xbox generation.  Releasing consoles in multiple colors and lots of limited editions only really became a big thing with the PS2 and later.  I hate to think how many different PS3's and 4's I'd own if that was my thing.,

So, yeah, console porn..... Anyone else into this?
