2018 VIDEO GAME CATCH-ALL THREAD

Um...so is this where we should discuss the rumors of Microsoft potentially buying EA AND/OR Valve? I'm not sure which would be the crazier, industry shattering purchase. EA may be down, but they're still the makers of damn near every sports game. Imagine having to buy an Xbone just to play Madden.

Purchasing Valve would presumably mean acquiring Steam as well.

I can barely begin to wrap my brain around would either purchase would mean.

Looking forward to the Great Future Feature of Microsoft Steam removing the ability to turn off automatically downloading updates for every single game you have installed but haven't played in 2 years because the company in charge of All Technology is blatantly conspiring with telecom companies who impose completely made up bandwidth limits for profit.

Given how Microsoft is shifting their value proposition around the Xbox and how Phil Spencer is open to cross publishing, I would wager that EA products would still be published across all platforms. You're only losing revenue by forcing everything to one console..

I am more worried about, as someone that favors the free market and competition, this inevitable future of everything being owned by 5-10 companies such as Disney, Amazon, Apple, Google, Facebook, and Wal Mart. I think Microsoft's value has diminished to an extent to where they would eventually be gobbled up themselves in the great acquisition war of 2018.

Okay so here are some actual cogent thoughts on Monster Hunter World

-This is my fourth Monster Hunter now. It is, by far, the easiest to get into, and everything you've heard about how complicated the game is can be assuaged by how well you can read. All of those tutorials are accessible in other menus too. You'll be fine.

-The basic loop of Monster Hunter is still magic to me, because the frequent changes of scenery keep each zone eerie. I never feel like I have a mastery of the environment. I have no interest in having a mastery of the environment. I want to be surprised by the scope of what's capable.

-Apparently the Hunting Horn is a rare or weird weapon pick, but honestly, the only reason I got into Monster Hunter was because I heard you could beat up dinosaurs with an enormous iron bagpipe, and after three games I saw no reason to change. Although, I do keep a Long Sword for when I need to go get tails by my lonesome.

-The Slinger is a game changer. To be able to set off bombs without needing one of the little ones is a great relief. To be able to pick up ammo that helps me with elemental problems (i.e. getting watermoss to knock mud off of giant evil catfish) is also a great relief.

-They let you belong to multiple clans, which is good because I was afraid of forming up with people here vs. the friends I have who are super into playing

It is as good as a MH game can get under present circumstances. I love it. I will play an ungodly amount of it over the next few months.

Having watched a few hours of gameplay (because I'm one of THOSE PEOPLE that does that now), my only concern is a lot of the enemies just feel like giant damage sponges who attack once every 20 seconds. But everything else about it looks really intriguing. Like, it seems to have a lot of MMO qualities without actually being some bullshit MMO you have to play 3 hours a day to keep even. And it has actual deep single player options.

The Bloodborne BL4 run roles on! I finished off the first chalice dungeon, took out the Witches of Hemwick without even taking damage and unlocked Cainhurst castle. Ok so no damage on the Witches isn't exactly a huge accomplishment, they are a joke boss, but I'm still happy with how this is going.

Its surprising how powerful you can get early on, even without levelling, by having a knowledge of the game and how weapons upgrades, gems and runes work. It's possible to get a +3 weapon after just killing one boss, a +6 after 2 bosses and a +9 after 4 if you know where to go and what to grind. Being able to access the first Chalace Dungeon after 2 bosses and grinding some good early/mid game gems helps a lot too. I was probably 4 or 5 bosses in before I upgraded a weapon on my first ever playthrough. I'm now torn between trying to kill Paarl to unlock bolt paper to make Shadows easier or skipping the headache that is Paarl and dealing with the Shadows without a buff.

Dark Souls is 100% this too. You can get so strong right off the bat just by Knowing Things, really. There is a ton of early game knowledge that completely changes the game from "what the fuck" to "let's get ready to rumble".

I finished the first run last night. Never had Solaire for the Gwyn fight before... Jesus, does he get shit on when you have help to distract him. I didn't even need to parry him, which is hilarious for a non-combat magic build, really.

My loadout was Black Knight Armor (for fashion), Grass Crest Shield, Ooolacile Ivory Catalyst (best catalyst at low INT and also very low weight, basically just for buffing, fall control, and cast light), Claymore +15 (IMO clearly the best, most versatile sword in the game, standard path means you can buff it), Black Bow of Pharis +15 (longest bow range, nice option). Also made a Chaos Great Club for shits and giggles (basically a specialist Gwyn-killing weapon), as well as collecting all the black knight weapons, the gold tracer, a ton of other rare weapons. Basically I'm a walking war machine. If I keep going I plan to late-level start dumping into faith for a Divine +10 Greatsword, basically just to make the NG+ Nito fight and his dumb skeletons manageable. Strongest non-magic character I've ever done by far. I have nearly every toy in the game to play with if I want it.

Still only beat Kalameet with one Estus to spare. Not gonna lie, I cheesed Manus because that whole area, and some of Manus' special effects specifically, make my PC chug like hell even with DSFix running and it moves into genuine "good luck with that" territory.

Yeah, when I played these games for the first time I was too concerned about using up upgrade materials etc that you end up making the game harder than it needs to be at the start. And I think DS is even more generous with the amount of weapons you can upgrade than BB is.

Im looking forward to the remaster. The first Dark Souls is the only one I never beat. I played the series in a sort of wonky order and I never got around to finishing it. Bloodborne was the first, wanting more of the same I picked up Dark Souls 2. I played a bit of Dark Souls on the Xbox One via backwards compatibility but sort of just forgot about it once I picked up DS3 on the PS4.

The biggest mistake new players make is spending 100% of their souls on levelling and 0% on upgrading a weapon. Andre the Blacksmith is (relatively) easy to get to and sells the lowest crafting material. You can make any weapon +5 for 8000 souls even if you have to buy 100% of the material, which seems like a lot when you are really new but absolutely is nothing in the big picture*. There's really no reason to torture yourself fighting bosses with anything less than that, at worst.

(*If level 120 is still considered the standard end goal/PVP level goal, most builds are gonna spend roughly 2 million souls on levelling to get there if I remember right. 8000 souls is a sneeze.)

If i remember right isn't there a dragon on a bridge near the blacksmith you can bait into killing a bunch of enemies for easy souls? Rinse and repeat, and you've got your 8k fairly quickly and safely. But again, you've gotta know this stuff going in and a new player wouldn't. I absolutely fell into the trap of not upgrading my weapon and putting everything into levelling early game. These games will never be 'easy' but you can definitely make them easier on yourself once you know what you're doing.

Add Darkbeast Paarl to the list of the BL4 victims! That bastard hits so damn hard and is so fast, it's taken me the better part of 2 hours to figure him out and kill him. I was wildly inconsistent while figuring him out. He'd literally one shot me in the first couple of seconds of one attempt, then i'd get him down to 20% of the next one. Next on the hit list is the Shadows of Yharnam. Yeah...

The Dragon Bridge is an option yeah. Just learning to farm the Balder Knights near Andre's bonfire is good too (those guys can also drop crafting material, so it serves a double purpose). I'm at a point where I tend to go for a more advanced method, collecting various consumable souls, using the Master Key to take a very early "backdoor" path to Andre, then popping the consumables for a quick boost. From there you can take the Undead Parish elevator back to Firelink and start "normally".

Maybe I should just start that Dark Souls Remastered thread early if I'm going to be dumping this sort of info anyway.

So I got a PS2 game in the mail today - Maximo: Ghosts to Glory - and my PS2 can't read it.  The reason is probably that the bottom of the disc (the side facing the down) is blue.  Blue PS2 games are usually from the early days of the console and are cd-rom, not dvd-rom.  Apparently, the cd-based games spin at a slightly different speed and aren't always read well by slim PS2's (and PS2's with weakening lasers).

Two options around this come to mind.  There's a Greatest Hits version of Maximo.  Does anyone know if the Greatest Hits version also has a blue bottom, or does it have the usual silver bottom?

Or:

  Reveal hidden contents

Could I make an ISO of the game and burn it to a DVD?  The PS2 is (soft) modded, so I can go that route but I don't know if that works as easily with cd-based games.

For the record, not having any trouble with other PS1 games, which are also CD-based (but don't have the blue bottom).  Near as I can tell, the Maximo disc is in great shape.  I don't see any scratches.  I don't think the laser is in that bad of shape.

Kinda bummed.  Wanted to be playing the game tonight.

I got another copy of this and the 2nd copy played fine on my PS2 (which is odd, since the first copy looks to like new and scratch free, as far I can tell).

Anyway, i... already regret this purchase.  Maximo is really f***ing hard.  I'm already reduced to rage playing, which is a first for me.

I'm still pretty early in Hyper Light Drifter and I have to be honest, I am really struggling to figure out where I have to go next or what I'm supposed to be doing. It seems like a neat game but so far it's proving pretty impenetrable to me. I want to give it a little more time yet, but it's a little frustrating right now.

It's taken more hours than i'd like to admit, and I've been stuck on this boss for 4 days, but the Shadows of Yharnam are finally dead at BL4. Up until them it's felt like if I've died it's because i got greedy or hadn't completely learned a bosses move set but there's so much randomness to the Shadows fight it just feels unfair at times. The fireballs one shot you and any normal attack takes about 80% health off. There's decent amounts of cover but trying to keep track of all threes attacks, while only damaging one is a nightmare. I ended up having to take my time with the first, bait him out, then parry him and just go all in super aggressive on the remaining 2 to try and skip their phases. I got real lucky i think and managed to stun lock the last guy before he could summon snakes. Fuck that fight.

I've got farther than i ever thought i would with this run. I figured the Shadows would be what ended it. There's nothing else now i can do to gain more damage, my weapon is +9 and while i could try and farm a slightly better 3rd gem i don't think the extra damage at this point will make a huge difference compared to how long it will take to slog through the chalice dungeons to get one. I'm just going to keep going now until i cant master a boss, or it just get's too frustrating and no longer fun. Rom, you're next!

Dragon Ball FighterZ is fun as fuck.

Is it worth it to get the Fighterz or Ultimate editions? I'm thinking about getting this today or tomorrow, but I'm kinda hesitant to drop 90+ bucks on this...

Edit: Also is it possible to unlock everything by just gameplay?

Has anyone played the new UFC game? I was about to buy it for Xbox one and the reviews look pretty bad. Going to hold off til I hear more. Curious if anyone here has played it and if career mode is as laggy as the few that have reviewed have said

I have  (for PS4)  and it's bad. I'm comparing directly to UFC 2 which I played loads, and the graphics are worse, the fighters move really stiffly and awkwardly, the controls are clunky and the changes make no sense, you now have to press L1 & R1 to block low, and both punch and kick together to do an uppercut. The menu screens are less intuitive than the ones on UFC2, all the Bellator fighters are (obviously) out of the game, as are some of the legends, the new additions are mostly nobodies apart from Ngannou, they really should have added to the legends to make up for this, Tito, the Shamrocks and Couture at the very least should be in the game. People are saying the career mode is improved but I have  no interest in playing it since the actual mechanics are so bad. I requested a refund within a couple of hours of playing it, it's a major, major disappointment.

Got my 102nd Platinum with one of the worst games I've ever played -- Way of Redemption. Here's the problem with it:

1) It's online only

2) The developers are shutting down the servers for PS4 on 2/10 FOUR MONTHS after it was released in November

3) They don't care

4) The game is glitchy and some of the trophies don't work right

5) DO NOT PLAY THIS EVER.

Other than that, yay?

That's really sad to hear about the UFC game. How hard can it be to make a good game where people punch each other in the face

Yuke's: "Harder than you might think."
