Re:  Rick Dennison

How did a career defensive player (linebacker) end up an offensive coordinator anyway?

I'm willing to bet this isn't all that uncommon.  Seriously, a defensive player spends most of their time studying offenses and how they work.  They also know all the things that they had a problem defending.  It is kind of why a lot of defensive coaches like running quarterbacks when they become head coaches.  They know that it is the biggest advantage an offense can have.

yeah that makes sense and you'd think it would be more common (and TE Mike Tice becoming a QB coach backs it up) but the standard coaching progression is

play, coach your position, move up to corresponding coordinator gig

so in that sense it's odd/rare that Dennison got the opportunity to switch polarity even if logically it shouldn't necessarily be

I can’t believe Bill O’Brien got a five year extension.

Brian Gaine was with the Texans for three years before moving unilaterally to the Bills last season. Reportedly he was fired by Rick Smith. Speculation was Gaine agreed more with BOB than Smith, and thus had to go. Smith and BOB hated each other. Now with Smith gone, it’s all on Bill O’Brien with a lackey GM.

We didn’t have an OC last year. Maybe Darrell Bevel can help do for Watson what he did for Russell Wilson in Seattle? Oh who am I kidding we’ll never hire an OC.

Raiders reportedly hire Tom Cable as o line coach... As a Seahawks fan I'm sorry. RIP Derek Carr.

Not his fault the Seahawks spent all their money on Wilson and the defense leaving them to dumpster dive for O Line.  Cable was fine when he had that job with Oakland before.  Al just had a senior moment when he decided he should be a head coach

So for Colts and Titans, McDaniels gets first pick, Vrabel gets whoever is left?

thats Interesting, assuming Luck is not forever broken.

and wait — Mularkey gets fried for consecutive 9-7 seasons and a road playoff win. And O’Brien gets a five year extension after 4-12????

If you believe Ian Rapaport it is shaking out as

McDaniels to the Titans

Mike Patricia to the Colts

The Giants waiting for Jim Schwartz

I wanna throw up

If all of that shakes out that way, I'd imagine you could pencil in Pat Shurmur to Arizona, too.

Who goes to the Lions then?

Thought something came out yesterday from Schefter or someone that Matt Patricia was their guy.

I know that Shurmur had interviewed with Chicago, Detroit, Arizona, and New York during Minnesota's bye week. Chicago already hired someone, though.

The Titans thing really weirds things up a bit.

Well, yes and no.

Al was absolutely right to fire Lane Kiffin, and Tom Cable was the interim replacement who stuck around because they couldn't get anyone better to want the job.

The senior moment was more in how he fired Kiffin, hiring Kiffin in the first place, and mismanaging the franchise such that nobody better than Cable would take the job.

Perhaps the Giants aren't waiting for Schwartz after all.

They interviewed him during the Vikings' bye week, so if the Vikings do win on Sunday, they can give him a second interview in the week between the Championship Game and the Super Bowl. If Minnesota loses, well, then they don't really have to wait or anything.
