DECEMBER 2017 WRESTLING DISCUSSION

A random thought:

One thing I really dislike about WWE using essentially the same entrance set for every show is the fact that there aren't unique things for guys to climb on or use as plunder if they brawl up the ramp I'm watching Sullivan vs Benoit from Bash at the Beach 1997 and I'm watching Sullivan use a surf board as a weapon and it's just a neat little detail that probably won't be returning any time soon, if ever.

I also just want to say that I know I said that I don't usually watch Chris Benoit matches, but I just decided to watch this one since its Kevin Sullivan's last match

While the circumstances behind this are not yet clear, WWE 205 Live star Rich Swann was arrested early this morning at 12:09 AM in Gainesville, Florida and charged with Kidnapping/False imprisonment.  In the State of Florida, that is a third-degree felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine if convicted.  Swann has also been charged with Battery - touching or striking, a first degree misdemeanor in Florida, with penalties of up to one year in jail or 12 months probation and a $1,000 fine upon conviction.

Swann, 26, is currently scheduled to face Drew Gulak to determine the top contender for the WWE Cruiserweight championship on this Monday's Raw in Cleveland, Ohio, a match that will likely be canceled as part of the fallout of this arrest.

Swann was signed to a WWE NXT deal in 2015 after several years of working in Japan for Dragon Gate and a number of top independent promotions, including EVOLVE and CZW.  He was part of the Cruiserweight Classic tournament in 2016, which featured him speaking about how pro wrestling saved his life after the deaths of his parents.  Swann's work in the tournament lead to him being added to the roster for WWE's Cruiserweight series, 205 Live, where he had been one of the more popular fixtures on that series.  Swann has regularly appeared on Raw as part of the Cruiser division and at one point, held the WWE Cruiserweight championship.

Swann is currently incarcerated in Alachua County Jail, which has released the following mugshot photo:

I've always wondered, who ran the Gorilla position while Vince was doing commentary? Did it move straight from Monsoon to McMahon or did someone else run it when Gorilla got sick and eventually Vince took over after a while?

Bruce Prichard.

Benoit vs Sullivan was a feud that happened years too soon for mainstream wrestling. Like that shit was Attitude Era as fuck. Guy steals another guys wife but is the babyface because he's facing off with a cult leader and his gang of monsters...

And Benoit vs Meng being a mini feud as part of that... the pop when Benoit finally beat Meng was ridiculous. For all their faults, WCW booked some stuff perfectly.

Gainesville police put the Rich Swann arrest report up on Twitter (with addresses & phone numbers blacked out) due to the volume of media requests.

Swann is married to indie wrestler Su Yung. She had just done a show, he was driving her somewhere and critiquing her match performance, there was an argument which became heated, she told him to pull over, he wouldn't, she got out of the car while it was (slowly) moving and tried to run, he got out as well (with the car still in drive - it rolled into a telephone pole), put her in a headlock and brought her back into the car, with her screaming for help.  Witnesses saw this and called the police.

He has to be fired by Monday. WWE pushed the "he overcame a shitty upbringing" mandate hard with Swann, and after this they may as well cut their losses.

Just have Gulak do a PowerPoint presentation on how he's the deserving no 1 contender.
