Most Obnoxious Celebrity that You've Met

OSJ

Recommended Posts

John Wesley Shipp and Alan Young get my vote for classiest acts I've ever met.  Not saying this as a creeper fanboy, but of any celebs I've met, those two are guys I felt I'd probably be pals with in real life.  I never get tired of commenting how Shipp shakes hands like a damn man should, by god.

For obnoxiousness, I cannot say that I'm as big a fan of Elena Verdugo as I once was.

All the other athletes, musicians or actor's I've met have been pretty professional.

I was a contestant on Family Feud earlier this year. Steve Harvey just exuded a smug, asshole vibe. I mean, he was great at his job of being host of a game show and entertaining the crowd between commercial breaks and stuff, but you could just tell that off camera he would not be a guy you'd want to hang out with.

And after each episode that was taped (several eps were taped in one day), while families are being switched over and such, he would talk at length to the crowd and do a literal sermon. I have no problem with somebody having faith in any religion, but I don't think that a game show taping is the place for this. At one point, he went on a long tirade about "If you want something, all you have to do is ask God for it, write it down, and He will provide". He then told a story quoting some passage in the Bible how everybody is entitled to the same amount of land, so at one point he did the math about how many people are on the earth and how much land there is on the planet and that each person alive should get 6 acres of land. At this point in his life, he had nothing and was living in his car, so he asked God for his 6 acres and low and behold not long after, he came across a plot of land that he was able to get a piece of from a nice, local farmer. So then he figured, "Well, I know a few people who are in jail and won't be getting out, so I asked God if I could just have their 6 acres" and he was able to expand his land. Then he figured there are several athiests out there who don't believe in God or the Bible, so they won't believe in that passage that allows them this land, so he asked God if he could just have those Athiest's land since they won't use it. So on and so forth until he amassed a 200 or so acre farm. And "all he had to do was ask God, write it down (he was very adamant about this "write it down stuff"), and God made it happen for him.

There were a few other moments and preaching from the day that really grated on me, but I think that whole "write it down" and "I'm owed this much land" thing was the worst for me. Especially the part about Athiests not deserving any of it.

Yeah, Steve Harvey is a tremendous asshole and it goes back to his standup days when he was sabotaging young comedians. Everyone who has went on the road with him does not have good stories about him. It's no secret us black folks love Jesus, but Steve, man you been married numerous times and then married a woman who is a notorious hustler (I respect her hustle though) who profits off marrying goofy dudes like him. He's the wrong dude to be doing this jack legged preacher shit.

On the Kings of the Comedy tour, Steve Harvey was eating ass every night and bombing as the HEADLINER. Bernie Mac, who was killing every night, was the opener. The only reason Bernie went last on the film is his shit was too big by the end of the tour to be the opener. His shit was too catchy. He had to close. Steve got mad and tried to prevent Bernie from getting opportunities. That's why he didn't have a show immediately after the film for the tour came out. To be frank, Bernie could have a had primetime show fifteen years before he finally got one. They were not on good terms when Bernie passed away. And the funny thing is Bernie was the exact opposite. Bernie is the reason why a bunch of black comedians from Chicago from the early 90s until his death got on and became successful. The same goes for Lavell Crawford (bka as Huell from Breaking Bad) in St. Louis, Bruce Bruce in Atlanta, TuRae and Keith Robinson in Philadelphia (who got Kevin Hart on), etc. etc.. There are hundreds of comedians who owe their careers to those guys. Steve Harvey intentionally tried to make sure no one funnier than him (which wasn't a hard feat to accomplish TBH) opened up for him or got time on stage. And anytime he did it, he was forced to do it because you couldn't deny how funny those dudes were.

That's why I have hope for humanity when I see his ratings go down for that bullshit photo op he did at Trump Towers. "My wife advised against it"...no shit but she married a lame like you and that's what comes with marrying a lame like Steve Harvey.

At some point, even the folks who believed in your bullshit for so long are going to rebel against you doing bullshit.

I've never met a celebrity who was an arsehole. Tony Blackburn was friendly. Jonathon Morris is a great guy. Shawn Daivari was cool (I was surprised at how small he was though. I thought he'd be shorter than me, but even though he was all jacked and bacne'd, his shoulders were narrower than mine. Fit Finlay is a great guy, and extremely intimidating. His hands are like saucepans. And Emma Frain is surprisingly shy (nb: That's not a famous person I've met, that's a famous person I know).

Mick Foley was a total douche to us. Went to his stand up comedy gig where he just awkwardly veered from one story from his first book to the next. Forgot that most of the crowd had already paid for after-show meet and greet, whined about it. Then called me out as me and my friend wanted a photo with him together, and decided it was line cutting or some such illogical bullshit. We'd already paid him the same amount, it didn't matter to him, we both said we wanted the photo together, and so we've got this awkward photo of him just looking shitty.

As such, I hope those claims about him are true.

On the other side, as a younger man, I was an obnoxious ass to AJ Styles and he took it very gracefully. I appreciate that in hindsight.

A few years ago I was doing a podcast on Blogtalk radio. This is before it became too saturated and you had a shot at getting a guest.

So I managed to get a good selection of actors, writers and wrestlers. The only bad experience I had was with Ken Kercheval, who played Cliff Barnes on Dallas. I sent an email and he agreed to do it. He gave me a call and was very nice. Then the show started and he was not rude per se, but very abrupt and short. He asked if he could go after fifteen minutes and I was relieved for it to end. The thing I can't figure out was why he agreed in the first place?

That said I was still grateful for his time. It was just an odd experience.

Wanting it to be true that Mick Foley is a pedophile or some such because he was mean to you is a bit harsh. Maybe he was just having a bad day and in tons of pain and taking it out on others. He is human. Or maybe he really is just a big jerk who will somehow push his daughter into porn that he directs and become the XXX version of Dario Argento.

They say you shouldn't speak ill of the dead but 'they' clearly never met Alex Higgins.

What an obnoxious shit.

I'll leave it at that for fear of speaking ill of the dead.

I walked past Andrea Corr once when she was at my university's film theatre promoting a film about 5 people including her saw. Walking past someone clearly doesn't count of course, but still, celebrities are few and far between around these parts unless you count random dudes who sat on their arses for a month inside the Big Brother house or some shit so I'm counting it. Her prettiness nearly counterbalances Alex Higgins' general shitheadery.

Dumb question, who is this particular Wayne Jacobs? I went to high school with a Wayne Jacobs who was QB at UTEP as well as playing in Europe and doing coaching clinics, just wondering if it is the same guy.

I've met lots of musicians, a few wrestlers and a smattering of other performers (mainly Canadian stand up comedian Lorne Elliott and Samantha Bee, who was in the same University theatre program as I was). Most of them were very nice, I cut a lot of slack for not being overly friendly given they were likely busy or tired and nobody was particularly obnoxious. Zia McCabe from the Dandy Warhols was a bit abrasive with the guy in front of me (fair play to her, he was staring at her tits the whole show), but she was friendly with me when I got her autograph (she dots her I with a heart). Nicest musicians I've met are Jacob Moon, John Wesley and Tony Levin (have met Tony 3 times, he autographed a setlist "Hi, Fiona!" for my then wife when I told him she couldn't make the show because of work.) Julianna Hatfield is extremely soft spoken and gentle, and Jewel is very sweet and spectacularly beautiful in person. Of the wrestlers I've met, the nicest have been Colt Cabana, Chris Hero, Low-Ki (surprisingly) and, of all people, Dasher Hatfield, who at two different shows went up to me to chat and ask if I was having a good time. Just met Keith Lee over the weekend, he is an absolute Teddy Bear, just a complete sweetheart. The one obnoxious celebrity story I have happened to a friend of mine, who was back stage before a music festival where Styx were performing and Lawrence Gowan freaked out at her for briefly resting her drink on the arm of his chair. The mid 80s were a long time ago, buddy, you just aren't that big a deal anymore.

What a dick.  Also, don't forget, word is Harvey called the producers of Ocean's 11 trying to get Bernie fired from the movie so he could take his place.  Fuck Steve Harvey and his Bigen mustache.

I met Ric Flair at an autograph signing in the mid 90s.  I wanted to shake his hand and he obliged, but he looked at me with this weirded out, disdainful look, like offering a handshake was the most alien shit in the world.  To be fair, he was probably hung over as fuck.

I went to an autograph signing at a liquor store when Dan Akroyd was hawking his vodka.  People in line were supposed to buy a bottle of his hooch and then have him sign it.  That's it.  No conversation, no questions, nothing.  He seemed like a really miserable shit.

On the awesome front, I met William Sanderson once -- in real life, not at a signing or convention.  He sincerely thanked me for remembering that he was in Blade Runner.  Just the coolest guy.

I met Gene Snitsky at a ROH show.  I don't know if the was visiting or trying to get work.  He was standing off to the side chatting with a friend of mine who worked at the building.  I didn't notice him at first, I was just walked by and said hi to my friend.  Then I did a double take and said, "holy shit Gene Snitsky!"  He was  super nice, gracious dude.  I passed Davey Richards in the hallway later in the show (bathrooms and locker rooms were down the same hallway, which is fucking hilarious).  We both said "hey" or "what's up" or something.  He seemed cool in that "I'm not going to be a standoffish dick to the marks" kind of way.

I know the thread has developed into just general celebrity experiences but, man, William Sanderson is the best so far. Of course, if I ever met him, I'd have to reel myself in and try really hard for myself not to be the obnoxious one by getting him to quote EB Farnum lines like every stereotypical obnoxious fanboy ever.

Of course, I've heard a few stories about him before and all of them were good so he probably would quote them for me. But still, don't be that guy.

Aw, dammit, how could I not get him to say WHEN I HEAR HIS VOICE, I SEE THE INSIDE OF HIS SKULL! PHANTOMS GRIN OUT AT ME OOZING GRUESOME GOO!

Growing up n NYC I had Arthur Godfrey as an upstairs neighbor. He was pretty reclusive by that point in his life. He had one of the 2 penthouse apartments in my building and every kid was told to avoid knocking on his door for Halloween or any reason whatsoever. I (as well as several other children) failed to heed this advice one Halloween (I was about 10) and lo behold right after knocking on Gofrey's door there was roar of "Get away from my door you little shits!"

The reputation was well deserved it seems. If you don't know who Arthur Godfrey is, think of the movie "A Face in the Crowd" with Andy Griffith and ho that ended for Griffith's character.

I used to do freelance TV production.

1. I stole the last ginger ale from Richard Dreyfuss at the "Homework Day" event/live stream my wife's company was putting on.  It led him to do a tirade on how terrible current educational practices are, on a manufactured holiday to celebrate doing homework.

2. At Eddie's last Smackdown, Tommy Dreamer made sure I got something from catering before they shut down for the night.

I've been fortunate that the wrestlers I met have been at worst nice and at best really fucking awesome.   The only that I'd consider mildly obnoxious was Billy Gunn.  Him and Tommy Dreamer were at Jimmys for Survivor Series and were supposed to be hanging out.  While Tommy was chatting it up with everybody Billy was fine with staying in the corner hidden from others.  The only time he came out to was when he was signing to autographs/taking pictures for $10.  I got one and he did enjoy talking about NJPW and Tanahashi.  So while personally I had no issues I could see others weren't happy with Billy hiding himself for most of the night.  But Tommy was the absolute best and we loved chatting with him.  He gave his thoughts on Survivor Series and it was cool to have that chat as it was going on.  He was super gracious with photos and really appreciative of the compliments we threw his way.

I spent an evening with Tom Savini at a Rocky Horror convention. Have no idea why he was booked. Found him to be a bit of a creeper.

What Ace said.  I met Tom Savini at Motor City Comic Con in 2009 and he was not an asshole, but he wasn't exactly a people person either.

I got to talk to Michael Jordan at a Charlotte Hornets meet & greet and I can say with surety that he's a total dick.  He is obviously shook about how LeBron's boys are basketball prodigies while his sons.... are not so much...

My girlfriend and I got to talk to Mike Tyson when we were in Vegas for Pacquiao vs. Morales 2.

(Caveat:  We were actually there for a friend's wedding that weekend.  We attended the weigh-in and we knew that ticket prices were going to be insane, so we watched the fight at a MGM viewing party) .

I've always heard that Tyson was a bit of an ass, but I suppose dealing with his troubles in life has caused him to reflect on his attitude because he was super nice.  He talked to the both of us in lobby of the MGM like we were old friends of his that he'd known forever..

I also met Kota Ibushi at an ROH show in Detroit and he may be the most gracious human being that has ever lived.

He wasn't obnoxious, but I got very gently dunked on by Steve Perry when I met him.  I asked him for an autograph for a coworker and he gave me a very shit-eating smirk and a very sarcastic "Oh, for sure, I'll sign that for your 'Coworker'."  But he did give me the autograph and recorded a little thing for my friend's sketch show so I can't give him too much shit.

Barry Sanders refused to give 9 year old me an autograph, but to be fair I think he just didn't want to interrupt his game of pop-a-shot.

Knowing how Jordan is, I don't think I would ever just walk up to him even in a setting where it's welcomed. He might confuse me for one of his gambling buddies who owes him money. I don't want Oakley looking for me. I'm good.

I'm mostly lucky that the majority of my experiences have been good. Met Vince Vaughn at a bar back when his comedy show was here. I met Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, and a bunch of other View Askew guys at Wizard World and they were all nice. Sean Astin was super nice and played along well with us doing the Rudy chant.

If anyone stands out it's a couple guys. Again, at Wizard World, my friend and I see that there's no one at Virgil's booth. Keep in mind that this was well before Virgil became a meme. Now, he was cool too I guess, but we the carny you'd expect, telling us he sold out MSG and was a bigger star than HBK. No, the real jerk was right next to his booth and that was Walter Koenig. He had no one at his booth and do my friend was telling Walter that he's a big fan and all Walter could do was keep interrupting to ask if we wanted to buy a headshot. My friend eventually asks if he can take a picture with him and Walter rolls his eyes and goes, "fine."

The biggest asshole was Dean Norris. Dean is a sorta local dude here (lived in the neighboring city) but he'll come out for some ND home games. Imagine him as Hank, but more of an entitled dick. He would basically take drinks or food right from us without asking, get a plate of food and throw more than half of it away, blow people off, and would act threatening if you wanted to take a picture of him. And this didn't just happen once. It's happened like three times.

Regis Philbin is another I've heard bad things about, but I've never bumped into him on gameday.

Other people who come out for gameday, like former players, are always awesome. My friend said Golden Tate and Theo Riddick were as nice as could be when they were here this season for the USC game.

Based on what a bunch of people I respect, (including my bro from different parents above), I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that perhaps Savini was cool to me because I was another Guest of Honor at the convention, (deservedly or not, I do get the celeb treatment at a number of conventions). I've already mentioned Linda Blair being an insufferable diva. The flipside was Brinke Stevens, as cool a person as you can imagine. We did a panel and then sat around shooting the shit about comics and "B" movies for a couple of hours.
