I wish I had Surviving the Game too. It's been on in an edited version recently and that's just unacceptable.

EDIT: Oooo, speaking of Ice-T and '90s action, I just remembered I do have Trespass on DVD. Bill Paxton, Bill Sadler, Ice-T, Ice Cube, and even Tiny Lister! And a Hill/Zemeckis joint too, right when they were doing Tales from the Crypt.

I own Tremors on Blu already. Talk me out of this.

All just ordered They Live and The Deer Hunter on 4K from Shout. Not sure if I'll have to wait until They Live is released in December to Deer Hunter or they'll ship them separately, but either way.

I am unfamiliar with the 4K format. I assume I need a new TV (mine's a decade old) and a specifically 4K player?

Right. New player and New TV. It's been going for a 6-7 years now, but has been slow to gain momentum because streaming and seemingly negligible benefits. You'll see it as UHD or Ultra High Def. Streaming sites also have content in UHD or 4k but your ability to access that is determined by the consistency of your bandwidth among other elements.

Like any format it can be hit or miss. You can see comparisons with bluray where the BR looks better or worse depending on the scene, so personal preference comes into play. Most movies are mastered or remastered in 4k first just to get the best picture they can and then compressed to the 1080p resolution, so you're already getting some small benefits of 4k.

Some of the major collector labels are just now dabbling in it. Criterion hasn't released any yet, despite many of their discs being mastered in 4k, and I don't think they have any plans to. Streaming in 4k on their service is probably the game plan if it becomes financially viable.

8k is already happening as we speak but is highly unlikely to ever become a physical format, so 4k is pretty much the end of the road for physical media.

As for the TV, UHD TVs are already pretty cheap, like sub 300 at Target. I've heard some people say you can't see the benefits until you get into the bigger screens like 55+ inches, but I don't know how real that is.

I haven't sweated upgrading yet, though if three more bucks gets me a UHD disc + BR disc + Streaming Code, I don't see the harm in grabbing it now.

The optical disc option of the PS5 is a UHD drive so that might be how I end up upgrading next year or so.

On my 50", cheap 4K set, the resolution doesn't make much of a difference, but the HDR is significant. The colors just look so much better.

And that's just with basic HDR, not HDR10 or DolbyVision. Because, of course, even when we don't have a format war, we somehow have a format war (TV and, I think, players, usually only support one of the two HDR+ formats, and ditto for the vast majority of UHD discs, but you can play the discs on any 4K set-up, just if you don't have the matching HDR+ formats, you'll know get regular instead of scene specific.)

I ordered some 4Ks the other day from BB.  I got Goodfellas which to my knowledge this is the first release on 4K and all I had was the DVD.  I also got Mad Max: Fury Road which should look great and then of course I ordered Total Recall first time in 4K format.  Excited for that one,  it comes out in December.
