NOV 2017 TV THREAD

Based on my thoroughly unscientific research (ie reading threads here), it seems nobody is watching Walking Dead or Mr. Robot this season.

One of them is rather tedious, one is doing better than last season.  I'll leave it up to you to guess.

There's some talk about it in the Mr. Robot thread. This is my first time watching Mr. Robot week to week and I have to say that it's 100 times better when you can binge watch it. Everything stays fresher in your memory that way and shit that was really cool that doesn't get paid off for 2 or 3 episodes stays cool in your memory. At this rate, something from episode 1 could receive a call back or pay off and I probably wouldn't care as much.

Yeah, I watched it. Vice Principals is criminally underrated and underwatched. It's so fucking good week to week. Sucks that we're already at the series finale, but it's been one hilarious and dark ride.

Spoiler

I watched it again and I think Christine shot Gamby. She seemed unconvincing in feigning shock that Russel shot Gamby. Russel never admitted to shooting him even after getting his ass kicked. The diary stuff was disturbing, but I think the sister is an unreliable narrator. If Russel killed the cat on purpose, why did being called kitty killer reduce him to tears.

Christine has seemed badish most of the season. Her reason for being mad at Russel is she longs for her college boyfriend. If Russel did spread the rumors, Christine believed them. I also would think a decade long marriage would mean more. I think in real life that is grounds for divorce.

That or its that nut bar Abbot.

I feel like the shooter on Vice Principals has to be

Spoiler

Abbot. She drove to the spring break house to plant the evidence in Russell's car because she was jealous that Gamby brought him along.

I'm kind of happy they intentionally made the show only two seasons. It's very British and something that's slowly being embraced here. I'm sure everyone has a show they love that was ruined by it refusing to conclude sensibly.

To be fair, Dexter was ruined long before the finale.  The "lumberjack" finale is just the extra turd on top of a shit sundae.

Apparently, Showtime told the show creators they needed to leave him alive so they'd have the option of bringing the character, or even the show, back.  This is what happens when corporate messes with creative.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of a show that outraged me with it's conclusion.  Mostly because most of the shows that spring to mind (that I was very wrapped up in) went on too long and lost me before they dropped a massively disappointing final episode.  I mean, yeah, the ending to Dexter was kinda absurd and basically a cop-out, imo, but Dexter has dropped drastically well in quality before the finale and I was so checked out by the finale that I didn't care too much what they did at the end.  So it goes for most shows.  Generally I lose a  lot of interest in shows when the creative teams start changing and the final episode is just one more nail in a coffin that's been under construction for a couple seasons, at least.

Edit: I take that back.  Wrapping up Breaking Bad by de facto babyfacing Walt and framing his demise as tragiheroic made me want to throw a tv through my tv,  Show should have ended with Hank either taking Walt down (or someone taking Walt out as payback for his various crimes). Walt was an amoral, evil guy who was sympathetic only because he was a well-written fictional character.  Until the last couple eps, it never occurred to me that Walt would get some sort of babyface treatment.

Boo.  Massive copout.

Oh god I forgot about Dexter. That should've ended after the season with John Lithgow, for fuck's sake.

EDIT: You know what? I don't think I even watched the finale; I watched UP TO the finale but not the actual episode. After the uproar afterward I never bothered to watch a replay. Those last couple seasons were a good example of hate-watching.

It should've ended with Deb blowing his brains out.

Philosophically speaking, the series finale made perfect sense IF the goal is to keep the character around.

Dexter is a survivor, a liar, a narcissist, and an opportunist so there was no way he'd just turn himself in to face the consequences of his actions or allow Deb to take him in, no matter how much he loved her.

Dexter would no more surrender himself to justice than Jack The Ripper or the Zodiac Killer or any other serial killer in history would.

Dexter still has the goal of wanting to live an authentic life while still indulging in his compulsion to kill, but he's close to being discovered before he figures things out so what does he do?  He runs and goes into hiding until he's ready to put theory into practice.

That sounds like flawless Dexter logic on paper.  The execution of that idea was the worst episode of a television show I have ever watched.

Dexter only truly had a couple of great seasons, and it definitely went to shit after the Trinity Killer stuff. To be fair, I didn't even finish the last season.

I often think about what a superb single season miniseries Californication would be remembered as if the rest of the series hadn't largely sucked.

As the most character driven Law & Order, I was really disappointed when USA brought Criminal Intent back with D'Onofrio and Herbe and still didn't wrap it up well.

Conversely, I thought The Office was still good (with some rough patches) after Carrell left until it concluded.

Fifth season of The Wire was kind of a wet fart too. All of us can probably agree with that no matter how big of fans we are of the series. There was a lot to like and some stuff that really, really did not work (see, McNulty, Jimmy and Freeman, Lester)

A few questionable decisions with those characters, sure, and the newspaper stuff never really landed the way they'd have wanted. But there's still plenty of moments in there that I'd rank among The Wire's best. A rewatch of that would never be complete without that scene with Michael and Dukie in the car.

Also:

S5 isn't the complete package like the rest of the show, but I'm very happy it exists.

Precisely why I wanted the show to end well and they fucked it up.

Man, that Dexter finale was so infuriating. I remember at that time being like, "oh FUUUUUCK this." It was one of those things where I was already checked out because the series went to shit, but fewer things tested my suspension of disbelief like that series finale.

While we're all distracted by the lumberjack ending, we're sleeping on the fact that Dexter took his sister off life support in the hospital and made off with her body in broad daylight.  Sure, there was a hurricane coming, but come the fuck on.

Yeah, that was completely unrealistic.  I've tried that a couple times, and got caught every time.

Yeah, that was one of the things that made me hate everything about the finale. Also, abandoning his son! Just totally ditched him.

Shows should seriously never add kids unless they have real, actual plots already planned for them.  When a key plot point for every other episode is, "I gotta find a baby sitter for Harrison," you're doing it wrong.  Shit, look at the early seasons of Homeland, where we forgot Brody even had a son.  And the one season where we wished he didn't have a daughter, too, because the plot they wrote for her was beyond awful and a real time waster on an otherwise good show.

I'm looking forward to next season of Ray Donovan, as they've essentially written at least one of his kids (hopefully both, fingers crossed) out of the show.

Anybody remember the fucked up penultimate season of Entourage? Vince gets addicted to heroin and starts a toxic relationship with a porn star. Ari is trying to buy and NFL team and it concludes with him getting into this incredibly messed up argument with Carla Gugino's character. Last episode Vince is in a tailspin, addicted and abusing women. Culminating with Vince getting his ass kicked and the police finding heroin on him.  This is not including E nearly getting an STD after sleeping around. The dynamic has shifted and Drama is clearly the only adult.

Final season and Vince is coming out of rehab, he is not on drugs anymore. No mention of the other messed up shit and you have a dull season and a duller movie.
