Sexual Assault and Harassment in Hollywood

Recommended Posts

"Harvey Weinstein is a left-wing hero!"

No. He produced Shakespeare in Love. And it beat Saving Private Ryan to the Best Picture Oscar.

At which point, I had already guessed he was a complete monster.

I read a story the other day stating that, in light of all this, men in various fields (tech bros and finance dbags, especially) are making noise about how they're going to avoid women at work in an attempt to dodge being accused of harassment.

Jesus tapdancing Christ.

If they're not just being punitive and you take what they're saying at face value, guys like this must be most maladjusted dumbfucks imaginable.  If you're a guy and you're worried about something you say or do being "misconstrued as harassment," that means the things you typically say or do must be pretty fucking dumb.  Here's how you treat women in the workplace, chucklefucks: like people.  Not like at set of tits.  Not like a prospective date.  Not like the chick you jacked it to on Pornhub last night.  Being worried over "accidental harassment" means you literally have no idea how to deal with women as human beings and probably shouldn't leave the house.

It's times like this where I feel like I should call my mom and tell her that I'm thankful that I wasn't raised by her and my dad to be an insensitive monster who thinks this shit is acceptable or that I should just avoid all contact with women because I may be so dumb as to accidentally harass someone.

I swear these people are the absolute worst.  It is impossible to accidentally harass someone.  I've worked multiple jobs and I have never said or done anything sexual to any woman on accident.  I've dated multiple coworkers, and love my dick jokes, but I don't think there is a single woman who would accuse me of sexual harassment.  It isn't hard, don't treat women like sexual objects.  Don't hit on women in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable in the workplace.  Be a fucking human being.  If you can't talk to a woman without harassing her, she isn't the problem.

Trump was elected POTUS.

You tell me the difference.

If you don't see the similarities you are missing the point.

Eventually Trump will leave and people will dance and cheer about a disgraced Presidency.

George Carlin was right.  Where did these people come from?  Us.  They came from us.  American houses, families, schools, and businesses.  We supported this behavior until one day we wake up and are disgusted by it.

Those in power in both parties are merely a reflection of ourselves and society as a whole.  Congress has a 10% approval rating but when you go to the polls next year chances are 80% of your Representatives and Senators will be reelected.

Starting next year running through 2020 we will be bombarded by political ads and phone calls telling us how we need to stop the other people from the other party.  Republicans will talk about the Liberal Agenda.  Democrats will be Stop Trump.  It will be a complete sh**show on par with any poorly run carny festival.

I got off topic a bit but we need to learn to be nice again.  Civility and saying things like please and thank you are lost arts in society today.  It really sucks.

I'm liking that for the Carlin.

I've seen this shit turn up in the punk rock scene. THE PUNK ROCK SCENE. Where people are supposed to be socially conscious, politically liberated, intelligent and caring, at least until some sociopath gets a girl drunk and pulls his dick out. Humanity is a ruined species and the level of insanity that goes up past that lowest level to the highest point of fame and power? I can't even imagine.

This is something that turns up in pretty much every subculture, every industry, on every part of the political spectrum.  It's not a left/right thing it's a power thing, a toxic masculinity thing, and a misogyny thing.  Unless we can deal with that shit as a society, which we've done a pretty bad job of so far, this kind of thing isn't going away.

I hope Louis CK is shitting rocks this week.

Those last 4 sentences of Beckinsale's post, yikes.  I did think there were probably quite a few women who responded amenably to Harvey's advances.

As has been mentioned, there is a suggestion that Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie got off "easy" because of their family connections. (Spielberg being Paltrow's Godfather and Jon Voight, obviously)

I don't think anyone is suggesting that. I think the notion is that the more well-connected women in Hollywood would certainly have a platform to speak on these issues. Ok, an under five actress won't say anything. But fucking Meryl Streep (Queen of FUCKING Hollywood) who did that Big Chill ripoff a few years back with Chris Cooper and Cumberbatch that was a TWC film didn't know Harvey Weinstein was a perv? At this point, if a Meryl Streep or anyone who has been a notable actress for 2 or 3 decades at least comes forward, who isn't going to come forward? In addition, who the fuck is going to ignore stuff like this coming from them?  That's my point. My point is that the reason why we keep getting Harvey Weinsteins is people wait until these guys are old, rich, and untouchable. Yeah, his rep is diminished but his bank account is still going to be the same. He isn't going to jail because his lawyers will fight that shit to the death if these things happened years ago. If Lisa Bloom (her and her mother are notorious pieces of shit IMO) was going to discredit the accusers, you know he has the connections to do just that.

What's the point of being a power player in Hollywood if you're going to let people do this for 15 or 20 plus years? Because it's not stopping at Harvey Weinstein. You can't say your films are powerful and this and that and then believe your voice is not powerful to stop these wrongdoings from going on day-after-day. That makes no sense at all. Either that, you're explicitly lying about the former. Get these dudes out of Hollywood at the first sign of danger or else they will see there is very little consequence other than when people are trying to push them out.

I'm not buying the strength in numbers angle anymore because Hollywood has been seedy since day 1. If you went to Hollywood (or whatever profession you choose) to eventually to be scared, then leave Hollywood. That is no fucking way to live. There is no way in 2017 (or anytime in the last say...25 or 30 years) people could believe that Hollywood and the entertainment industry in general is just this inviting place where nice people roam. The casting directors are terrible folks. The director and producers are terrible folks. Same with the execs top to bottom. The ONLY way to change the culture is to get these people out en masse. But if you're getting a big Disney check and act like folks like Bob Iger are all around good people (the motherfucker defended Trump and was on his advisory council), then yeah, you're a phony and big piece of shit too. If the only reason you come out against these people finally is you DON'T receive checks from them any longer or it's strategically advantageous, then I don't think much of you as a person or your beliefs. Say it now and prevent people from going through the same horrific experiences, whether it be getting blackballed, harassed, sexually assaulted, verbally abused, etc. If you wait DECADES like a lot of these folks did, you're just allowing reprehensible motherfuckers like Weinstein and Bryan Singer (yeah, fuck his pedo ass too) and all their ilk to continue to collect scalps until people get tired of covering up for them.

This is exactly why every Dallas Cowboy should kneel.  It isn't about the flag, it isn't about the anthem, it isn't even about the protest any more.  It is all about your rights not being for sale.  You get to the point where you have to send a message that your rights won't be disrespected for your paycheck.  None of this happens if the victims don't value their paycheck over their own dignity.  It sucks, you may lose everything you ever dreamed of having, but you'll save something more valuable for countless people.  It is much harder to fight the power of these systems, but if you want the system to change, you are going to have to fight.

Point to the women who are power players in Hollywood that have stopped a Harvey Weinstein from doing this.

I'll wait.

Since I was just about post this

So apparently Jane Fonda knew about Harvey Weinstein's actions a year ago (yup, just a year...right) and regrets not speaking out sooner. The interviewer asked why she didn't speak out earlier and her first reaction is the equivalent of:

UniformGiddyBandicoot.gif

She is getting lit the fuck up on Twitter right now.

The defense rests.

Also, I am not sure if "well, he's good at getting away with it so people can't stop him" is sound logic. I hope if there was a serial killer in your neighborhood or city that detectives or a person with a lead don't stop looking for him or her just because that person is good at it. I hope not. :)

Usually they have their own shit to hide and don't want to set a precedent.

The problem is someone has to own up to it. One tweet or one social media post can bring down the whole house of cards anyway. There isn't even a need to wait for the stories in the trade papers or tabloids. It's instant now. You don't have to go your entire life being fake and phony. Add in the fact that people are willing to openly extort and blackmail you for that info too. I don't know why anyone would just be glad to let some random stranger take them down.

Personally, I believe if you need a solution to stop this from being an issue, it's start with the men.  Or maybe in a broader sense, men in general.  I think we can all agree Harvey is the one to blame.  Point blank. No ambiguity or snowball effect needed.

If you need to break it down to degrees, I'm still putting Harvey's enablers and his crew next before the victims.  Yes, I am including the victims who gave into his advances for career boast or took a payout from his many lawsuits. The Weinstein board, the producer who lead Asia to the room alone with Harvey, people he used to get the allegations swept under the rug, and the like are the ones I am referring to here.

I definitely hope we get to a place where victims feel they can report these assaults more openly, but I don't feel comfortable being the dude from the outside looking in telling them they should have done more.

It's  actually incredibly easy. All it takes is saying something that gets overhead and misconstrued.

All the teeth-gnashing and hand-wringing we're seeing have me baffled. This is the same group of people that gives awards to Roman Polanski and line up to work with Woody Allen.

Exactly Tabe.

It is the power some of these people hold over a young career.  Weinstein was close with every top Democrat.  He donated millions to Obama and Clinton's campaigns.  Obama's daughter worked this summer for him.  He could exert a tremendous amount of power over people from multiple directions.  It took Hillary five minutes to speak out against the Las Vegas shooting and 4 days to speak out against Weinstein.

What always gets me is Hollywood comes off as this Liberal Paradise when in reality the casting couch has existed for young actresses for decades.  The same people that speak out against Trump and Republicans are the ones who whitewash movies and television shows.  James Woods retired because he was blacklisted for being conservative.

What a completely f'd up culture.  They attack people for their political views and then we find out all of this stuff.

Like I said earlier today, this is why I don't trust either political party.  Over the last couple of weeks I have been watching this clip over and over again without knowing why.  Now I know why.

Woods retired because Amber Tamblin outed him as a pedophile and he needed to go dark lest people dig deeper.  Gibson got forgiven and gets work, as well as Vaughn, so it's not like there's a full on blacklisting of conservatives in Hollywood.

Good points.  I am just trying to make the point of how much of a mess our culture is today.  Both political parties and the media have us at each other's throats.  We did not used to be like this.  There is a clear lack of civility today and those in power are to blame.

I think so, too. I also think that was how some people in Hollywood justified it to themselves.

"OK, he's a womanizer and it's sleazy...but it's more a casting couch deal than outright sexual assault."

Willful ignorance.
