He has said to actively be kinda looking at small market teams, or at least teams were he won't always be the center piece of attention, perhaps.

He would absolutely be the center of attention in San Diego.

So, you're saying Ohtani wouldn't be sole star and focus of a Padres team where Wil Myers is the closest they have to a star player? That's not a knock on Myers either. As long as he stays healthy like the last two seasons, he's one of the top first basemen in the league.

I just don't think anyone in San Diego cares enough about baseball for Ohtani being a "star" there to matter. Who was the last star on the Padres? It basically is Tony Gwynn by default.

Trevor Hoffmann?

bingo! no one here cares about anything! it's a big dumb grave full of adult-sized middle schoolers!

(disclaimer: as a very passionate person, the aloof nature of the city's identity might possibly be a sore spot.)

The official list of teams Ohtani will meet with

Dodgers, Giants, Angels, Padres, Mariners, Rangers and Cubs

Also - three teams didn't bother to send the requested info to Ohtani's reps. The Marlins are the only known one of the three as they had announced ahead of time that they wouldn't be bidding

No, that honor belongs to the sea lion population. Did you know they are all registered to vote? Their key issue is the eradication of both the shark and whale populations. The flat tax is also popular among them as well.

My rich, affluent, gay uncle lives in Palm Springs and all he does is whine about the Mexicans in San Diego. So, yeah. That's probably a fanbase to tap into!

Rogers is floating the idea of selling the Blue Jays

Probably nothing is gonna come of it in the short term and it clearly reads as something that is getting floating to see the type of reaction it is gonna generate

Not much probably since Rogers was the only interested buyer last time they were for sale.  I could see them dangling the team since the stadium is looking at 200-250 million in renovations and Rogers wants to invest money in other areas.  But they still want the games on their channels and no one elses so we wind up back at the beginning

They had an interesting discussion about it on 590, how intertwined the team and its media cousins.

What is now left pocket, right pocket would be more complicated, as baseball would undoubtedly want the highest bidder to get the rights, be it SN, TSN or someone else.

The Twins did the same thing with LAA too

Traded each team a million bucks in international bonus money in the hopes of better their chances of getting Ohtani

They got CF Jacob Pearson from LAA - where one place had him as the Angels 5th best prospect. Baseball America didn't but did say "The Angels' third-round pick this year, Pearson was considered the top draft prospect in the Louisiana high school ranks."

From the Mariners they got Catcher David Banuelos. BA says

Quote

Banuelos was a First Team All-American at Long Beach State and arguably the top defensive catcher in the 2017 draft. The Mariners picked him in the fifth round and signed him for $300,000. Banuelos is a stout receiver and blocker and widely projects as a future above-average-to-plus defender behind the plate. His best tool is a plus arm that threw out 60 percent of basestealers in college and 38 percent in his pro debut. On top of it all, Banuelos is bilingual and earns raves for his leadership skills and how he handles his pitchers. Banuelos' hitting ability is fringy but he has some usable pop and knows the strike zone. Overall evaluators see Banuelos as a Jose Molina or Rene Rivera type who can carve out a long big league career as a stout defender.

So the Twins definitely decided to make lemonade out of their lemons

More like a delicious Arnold Palmer I'd say.

Cubs sign Tyler Chatwood, which is a very interesting deal, but one I personally like. We might have overpaid, but he's an extreme ground ball pitcher who has always been much better away from Coors then at Coors, that gets to play in front of an elite infield defense. I think this is a good risk to take for a team needing pitching depth. He's a decent back of the rotation starter with clear upside in what might be the best scenario for him.
