I think Candy, much like Darlene, doesn't understand the world she lives in.  She's creative, driven, and has been successful, but she's trying to produce art for an audience that doesn't appreciate it.

I don't think that Candy is so much trying to make artistic porn as she is trying to make an experimental movie that just happens to have unsimulated sex in it.

I think she craves legitimacy in a field of work that no one wants to see gain any sort of mainstream status.

Candy's story continues to be the most interesting one in the series.

I think I could watch a Deuce spin-off series all about Candy struggling to be at the top of her field in an industry that is already destined to be male dominated for the next three or four decades.

Of course, it would be horribly depressing.

I want the spin-off series about Black Frankie.  That dude has seen some things.

Bumping a bit of an older thread, but I just made my way through it recently, finishing up yesterday. Excellent show that doesn't seem to get talked about a whole lot. A surprisingly sentimental ending too with a character revisiting NY in 2019 and bumping into all of the ghosts in a cleaned up, gentrified Times Square. Loved it.

Anyway, Black Frankie for those who might have missed it... Bobby asks him in the final episode what he's going to do next. Frankie mentions a cousin Nathan in the Lexington Terrace projects in Baltimore who needs some help with things. That seemed like a way too specific reference and sure enough it refers to the real life Nathan Barksdale, the basis for Avon Barksdale in The Wire. Of course, Bobby mentions he's gonna go try get his union job back (a sly nod to Frank Sobotka presumably)

I love Simon, and dug the Deuce.  It's a bit uneven for the high praise of some of his earlier work, but no more uneven than Treme.  Maggie Gyllenhaal's story (and her fantastic performance) is strongest in my memory.  I'm forgetting a lot of what happens in this series.  I'm always happy to see the great Chris Bauer.  I remember feeling like the Franco twin that dies was such a 2D character which made his story feel unnecessary.  I loved the song selections for the openings of each season.  Curtis Mayfield's 'If There's a Hell Below We're All Going to Go' being my favorite, but the Costello and Blondie tunes were fitting as well.  Looking forward to checking out 'We Own This City'.  I also missed 'The Plot Against America'.  To anybody reading this that overlooked the 'Show Me A Hero' miniseries and is a Simon fan, check that terrific shit out!  Very underrated.  I also stillneed to see 'Generation Kill' in its entirety.

Both of James Franco's characters and Abby were so unlikable that it dragged the show down a peg for me. After a few episodes I just didn't care what happened to them and wanted things to get back to Lori, CC, Darlene, Rudy and the crooked cops. I had a similar feeling with Vinyl where I didn't care about Richie and his wife or the Nasty Bits, that show should have been based around Ray Romano's character.

Actually for me, I was a getting a bit tired of Gyllenhaal by the end. Not the character, but just her performance.

Favourite side characters? For me, gangsters Rudy and Tommy, and Harvey, the cinephile who has settled for a life as a pornographer.

For sure, I remember a lot of things falling apart by the end.  Definitely some saccharine spots.  The inconsistent quality and random misfires are why this is ultimately a lesser known or discussed series.  But still, for those keen, a fun, often great work from the Simon catalog.
