Jrag
This board used to have a whole forum for The Wire and we haven't even started a thread for The Deuce yet? Shame. The first two episodes have been GREAT! I could never really get into Treme or Show Me A Hero so for me this feels like a return to form for David Simon. Excellent cast of characters. Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Franco have both surpassed my expectations so far. Bartender James Franco is a cool character, but I'm curious to see more of scummy twin James Franco. My favorite character so far is Darlene. So many Wire vets in this show. Shouts to Slim Charles as the diner owner who the pimps don't want to cross. Also, the show has already been renewed for Season 2! http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/deuce-renewed-season-2-at-hbo-1041126
J.T.
The character studies are fascinating, but these episodes are so much foreshadowing and universe building. I think we could've leapt into the meat of the story in medias res and been okay. The writing for this show is off the hinges. Candy's car salesman analogy was fucking brilliant.

Fuzzy Dunlop
The only thing worse than James Franco is two James Francos but this show is so good it makes me not hate James Franco. At least for an hour a week that is. Loving the whole atmosphere and vibe they're creating, really like that they've just dropped the audience into this world from the off in a fuck you this is what we're doing so come along for the ride kinda way and, damn what an ensemble; always fun playing spot The Wire alumni on David Simon shows. If Cool Lester Smooth or The Bunk shows up on this I may wet myself.
supremebve
I'm loving this show so far, but isn't it about time that we actually get some plot? It really looks like a bunch of people living their lives, which is pretty interesting so far, but I don't really see the reason why these people are the ones we need to be following. I think that was the thing that killed Treme for me. It was just a bunch of people living their lives in a way that can be interesting in the short term, but no plot that keeps it interesting in the long term. It is painfully obvious that this season is all set-up and world building. We get it, These characters are the prime movers. Can we commence with the actual premise of the series, please? Jrag
Y'all really calling for the pace to quicken in a David Simon show? Shit Omar didn't even show up til episode 3. Lester was only fiddling with dollhouse furniture at this point...
Jrag
Loved episode 3. Scummy James Franco getting more screen time is a plus. Darlene is still my favorite character. Interested to see what's up with this Mike guy.

The Deuce doesn't even have a conflict yet.

The mob stuff is interesting, but I don't expect much conflict with the PD on that front.
J.T.
I just don't see why we have to deal with sordid backstories to get to a ongoing tale that is just as sordid. I am just amazed by Simon's ability to deal with the rather harsh yet very matter-of-fact reality of pornography and sex work without romanticizing it or making a joke out of it. Jrag
Best episode so far in my opinion. The standing ovation bit at the end was equal parts funny and sad.

Happ Hazzard
The end of the last episode was a bit of a turn up for the books. With Simon's shows being so character driven, when dramatic events occur they have far more impact than in shows that are plot driven and have crazy stuff having in every episode. J.T.
I love this show but it is so depressing, yet it is about a subject that is fascinating and you think would be somewhat titillating.
StretchMediatedHypertrophy
Out of all the Wire rebookings, I think my favourite is actually Genevieve "Dee Dee" Hudson-Price as Porn Assistant Jocelyn. I struggle with Maury Levy as a cop though. I like James Franco, he's ridiculous but he's trying godammit. The star power of James and Maggie definitely take the show up a notch. This show is David Simon's Futurama basically.

supremebve
This has to be one of the best casts of all time, seriously every woman is unconventionally attractive, which I think is the key to the show. If the women were unattractive it wouldn't work, but if they were classic Hollywood beauties, it wouldn't work either. The five-year-gap is interesting because these characters all seem to have gone through something that is going to play out over the season. The game is passing C.C. by, but he's the last one to realize it. Him playing the $600 short game instead of thousands of dollar long game. Him trying to pull a quick hustle with the director paid off this time, but the next time Lori won't even be hired. Lori sees that, but C.C. is smiling like he just pulled the biggest scam of all time. Darlene and her thirst for knowledge in a world where conventional intelligence is penalized is a subplot that I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out. If David Simon has taught me anything over the years, she isn't going to get educated and become a doctor or some shit. The game is the game, and she's bucking the system in a way that cannot be allowed. If you want to get ahead in that world, learn the game, apply that game, get all the money you can, then get out of the game. Getting a GED is all well and good, but as long as she's a whore and Larry is her pimp, I don't know if it will do her any good. I think Candy, much like Darlene, doesn't understand the world she lives in. She's creative, driven, and has been successful, but she's trying to produce art for an audience that doesn't appreciate it. We've all had a favorite band who put out an experimental album that was a piece of shit...she's doing that but with porn. If you want to create artistic porn, that's fine but it better not distract the audience from "the objective."
